Amazon will do a trade in for kindles and echo items. It’s $5-20, but it’s out of the house. My listing bags for sale are part of my ruthless full house clean out. I am getting rid of anything that we don’t actively use (daily or for special times like holiday decor)
As a result, I have a number of inexpensive items - some still new in box - that need to go. For example, I was gifted some Amazon Echo devices and don’t use them.
It hardly seems worth trying to sell most of these things I don’t want on eBay or FB marketplace.
Question for the group: Do you have a minimum value under which you just donate or pitch items (vs. selling)?
I’m going to hold the next few big delivery boxes that come in and take all of this to a charity. If something is less than $100, I just can’t waste the time on it. In my experience, cheaper items draw the absolute worst buyers. I used to consider selling as a mindless hobby but now it’s just a hassle. So, I think my new minimum may become $250.
Advice needed, please.
I'm moving next week. I have 2 vintage bags (same brand and style, different colours) that are in pristine condition and are very small and flat, taking up almost no space, so are easy to pack up with everything else in the move.
However, they both have magnetic button closures that don't stay closed. I have to actively pay attention to the flaps when I carry them to make sure they haven't popped open and the contents aren't about to tip out.
The leather on them is lush! Such a beautiful patina. Hardware isn't tarnished, no cracks or peeling anywhere...it's just the magnetic closure that's the issue; and it's an annoying issue, at that.
Would you keep or donate before moving?

True, true! I think I'm hesitating because they're true vintage (1970s) and would be impossible to find in this condition again. They're not valuable but they are gorgeous! Also, not entirely sure they would be appreciated if donated where I currently live. I may opt to donate them when I'm back home.Personally, I would donate. You *want* them to work, you have lots of reasons why they *should* work, but they *don't* work.
Thank you!Best of luck with your move!
Magnetic clasps are easy to replace. But if you haven’t done it, will you do it in the future?
As a person who has moved three full houses worth of stuff in 4 years, moving is stressful and can be overwhelming. Focus on decluttering big stuff that takes up a lot of space or fragile stuff, and then worry about the little stuff when you unpack.
I have been getting rid of stuff in a local buy nothing group. Though day before yesterday, I stuck a big wooden jewelry armoire At the end of my property with a sign on either side that said free. It took a day, but it is gone. I didn't have time to make the drive to salvation army.My listing bags for sale are part of my ruthless full house clean out. I am so glad you are getting your heat back. Your bag is lovely.Navy sounds like a beautiful complement! I've got PT tomorrow so I'll be wearing sweats and sneakers. This time of year my ankles get cold when I'm not wearing boots so I may change afterwards. We're getting the new heater installed tomorrow!View attachment 6116943
This is an old picture.
Can you get a better magnet or other closure put on them at a later date? If so keep them.Advice needed, please.

YES! Convenience tax is definitely something to factor in. I sold something that I could've made more from ; however, having the cash in hand was the selling point for me. Aaand I get to help a small business continue operating! Win - win - win!I don't sell, but I will always pay a "convenience tax" when I have the privilege to do so. If something will cost some money but save me time and energy, I will always choose to lose the money in order to gain time.
The minimum value will be relative to each person, depending on how much they can afford to lose. Most of my bags are around $100 and my most expensive is around $350, and I would readily give those away rather than put in the work to sell them and deal with possible returns and all that hassle.*
My friends constantly lecture me on this because they think my approach is financially irresponsible, but I cannot prioritize relatively small amounts of money (which I can hopefully earn more of) over freeing up my time (which I can't regain once lost).
I'm reminded of a time I lived in a country with poor public transport systems, so it limited commuting options to and from my workplace. My commute was 45 minutes by cab. A coworker lectured me for months about how taking the bus was 10x cheaper, so one day I gave in and took the bus with him.
Well, that bus ride took 3 hours, plus an additional 30 minutes of walking home from the station. That was one-way, after a 12 hour miserable day at work. After that misery, I tried to explain that the additional couple of hours I saved by taking the cab were worth more to me than the extra dollars in my account, but he was a numbers guy and continued to scold me every day as I booked my cab home. You could've held a gun to my head and I still would've taken a cab!
*I've given away lots of fine china and sterling silverware that was worth thousands, but in those cases I donated them to raise money for charity, so I was happy to eat the loss in order to help during times of a natural disaster (the last time was the earthquakes in Turkey-Syria). So, that is also an option worth looking into if you have items you want to be free of and are able to use to contribute to good causes (the current LA fires or something similar). Even something like giving to Dress for Success is a good option, particularly for office-appropriate bags that don't work for you anymore but can help someone who is trying to get their foot in the door. So long as the monetary value would not sting if you do so.
Edit: The types of items I'm thinking of are not what you specified in your OP, sorry! My mind is just catching up
I don't have those kinds of 'bits' because I move too often to accumulate them. To me, those would be out the door immediately to free up space. I'd donate to anyone in the area who could use them. Any neighbours with kids who want the devices, or anybody who may not be able to afford holiday decorations. Even stuff like cushions or bedding, I dryclean and give to any family in the area that could use it, or give to a shelter that can utilize it on their cots.
Couldn’t you add snaps and just leave the magnets if you don’t have a cobbler to remove them?I can get a different closure, but the issue is in removing the magnetic snaps without ruining the leather around them because they're both stitched into the flap and body of the bag bag (2 male ends on flap, 2 female ends on bag).
The cobblers I spoke to were not confident the work could be done without the leather tearing in some places. They both advised me not to try, so I've been stuck with this issue for a while, always going back and forth on whether I should just let them go. I rarely struggle with releasing stuff, but the fact that they're vintage makes me wary. I don't want to give them to someone who may toss them because they're "old".
The more I consider it, the more I feel like I may ruin them if I try to DIY it. I think I'm going to hold onto them until I get back to England and then try with professional bag repair places there. They will have more experience with stuff like this than the cobblers I'm currently dealing with.
Thank you all for chiming in so quickly and helping me talk it out! I'm quite fuzzy in the head (totally sleep deprived), so just writing it out and getting some feedback was enough to help me decide.![]()
OF COURSE!Couldn’t you add snaps and just leave the magnets if you don’t have a cobbler to remove them?
I’m glad @dcooney4 gave you a solution. There’s no way I’d part with vintage bags with great leather.Advice needed, please.

I’ve heard of buy nothing. Do you post and then people pick up? I could do porch pick up by appointment? Or do you just set things out and whoever gets it first wins? I’m confused on that part. I don’t want anyone angry on my porch if someone got the item first. I also don’t want to go back and forth on ANYTHING for a free giveaway.I have been getting rid of stuff in a local buy nothing group. With BuyNothing, you post and people message you. When you select the recipient of your thing, you tell them where to go to pick it up (end of driveway, meet someone at a coffee shop, local landmark, ect) If they flake, or cancel, move on to the next person.I’m glad @dcooney4 gave you a solution. The more I think about it, I’d rather donate everything. I don’t want to take the time for zero gain.
