I think they're just trying to create a sense of scarcity and exclusivity. Every text from the SA's I've seen so far refer to the silver obsidian as something along the line of 'we have very limited quantity of this holiday pendant due to rarity of this precious gemstone...'
I like this HP and all but their sales tactic is quite silly and unnecessary.
Definitely have them add your friend to the list and wait it out instead of buying from the resellers. The first batch is reserved for VIP’s & clients with strong/long purchase history. My SA told me they should be expecting more batches to come through in the next few months in limited quantity. I was quoted sometime in November for the next client list/shipment.
I felt the same last year and I almost bought from a reseller...but in November I got a text from my SA that had one for me ( I hadn't bought much that year) and it was such beautiful shade too. Give it some time, also call online and put your name down in the waiting list, you never know.
I would agree that’s super unnecessary and off putting really! But I suppose experiences at VCA would vary with each boutique as my SA has not once mentioned to me anything about exclusivity of the HP. I agree that experiences seem to vary. I'm brand new to VCA, only purchased a pave mini Frivole pendant and sweet Alhambra studs, both just in the last couple of months, and was offered the HP.
When I say exclusivity I meant it in a sense that they no longer make it readily available online like they did with the previous HP's, or through walk-in without a purchase history. Last year they started this whole 'by invitation only' approach and it was quite a shock to many people and some clients were really put off by it when they didn't get offer one. If you check out the thread from last year's HP there was even some speculation around the minimum spend. They seemed to loosen up as the hype die down and start offering to more established clients who've expressed interest in purchasing one, some people even bought 3-5! Ultimately I guess it really depends on how many they have in stock and how quickly they want to clear out their inventory. I do suspect if someone walks in the boutique with zero purchase history, more likely than not they'll get rejected for the HP, just for the sake of weeding out potential resellers.

Oh I can call online? I had no idea.... does the store count what you buy online as part of your purchase history? Also, does VCA function like Hermes in a sense that if you're in another country they don't see your purchase history?
My SA is absolutely amazing and so kind to offer one to me! Since I'm a remote client, I didn't get to see/choose it so I was very happy to find such a beautiful piece nestled in the signature VCA box.

It really is a lot more stunning in person, so I'd highly recommend checking it out if you can. Each photo below is with different lighting/background to show that it's pretty hard to capture the correct shade/color/shimmer in photos!
