What ever works best for you. I have mine listed by color because that is how I store them. I also use that list for tick marks. I do have another list of my bags by style like tote, satchels, backpacks , Cross Body etc and a separate list for Sport and travel bags . I don’t like to admit it but I also have over 50 bags.

Yay! I’m not alone! [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23] and seriously, although I’d like to say I don’t care, I’m kinda self conscious sometimes with all the counting and statistic. I don’t keep stat. That’s why sometimes I’ll find a surprise of forgotten bags in my closet and it’s all happy again. [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23] It’s kinda interesting that most of the bag I rehome are bags I can remember, but most of my surprise unearth are most of the time will be loved again. [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

I don't think the thread is meant to make anyone uncomfortable. It is just to help us find the best way for each individual person to feel control over their collection. There are some who only have 3 or 4 bags who are here just to keep from buying more and are just as happy as those who have a large number. We are a wonderful group and I am delighted to get talk to everyone about almost anything.

I know. But when I hear that you all seem to have it all covered and limit under some specific number, I’m like... oh.... I don’t even know what my number is. [emoji28] And I’m happy with what I’m doing, but yeah.... my number seems to excessive when compare with everyone. [emoji28] But I know we all have different ways of doing things. There’re years that I i next to nothing and years that I totally went crazy and haul half the store. Probably different phase in everyone’s life. [emoji4]

I’m thinking of my goal for next year. I have one bag in mind of about a quarter now and may have to travel abroad to get it, which I’m willing to do that. I may allow myself a bit more room to breath and then that should be all for me next year. I’ll think over it and put that on the next year thread once I make up my mind. [emoji4]

I won't do a certain number. For me it is just about the space. I went crazy this year with certain sales and had a crazy amount of bags in. Luckily they were not all expensive. Though realizing my error I quickly removed the ones that didn't work. Just enjoy and have fun.

I think counting and keeping stats has worked for me. I’m not yet at my ‘ideal’ number but I’ve been able to not exceed a certain number. [emoji3] Whatever works! [emoji3]

As you may remember, I used to manage to a number. Mainly because I saw others here doing that. But, it felt uncomfortable because I like variety and I like to have at least some bags that are on trend. That means I will never be a minimalist and I will always have something new enter my closet. If I choose well and don’t want to sell, then necessarily my collection will keep growing. And, @vink, if a trend or designer’s approach matches my personal style, I may just buy 12 bags in a year because I love them. Then the next when trends change I may buy zero. In 10 years I could have 100 bags, who knows.

My personal limit is simply usage. If I buy and I don’t use, it needs to go because it was a “bad” purchase for me. But even that metric will soften for bags over time. If I have a bag 10 years and got 100 wear out of it, I’ll be very happy letting it sit in my closet without continued pressure to wear if I still love it. I think about my Fendi BTW. I’ve only owned it 19 months but I’ve worn it SEVENTY times. Or my LV LockMe II BB, I’ve owned it a little over 2 years and have worn it 56 times! In 3-4 years, I may rarely wear these bags as I’ll find something else adorable that is black and fits this usage. I won’t feel bad at all about buying it and semi retiring but still keeping these bags because they will certainly have been well loved and have a CPW (for whatever that’s worth) of pennies.

Speaking of those two bags, they still look brand new. Talk about great quality!!! They have been tossed in suitcases, shoved under airplane seats, dragged on less than glamourous outings to WalMarts and Home Depot’s, taken to ball games, etc. Yet, they literally don’t have a scratch, haven’t lost structure, haven’t had hardware to tarnish... all they need is cleaning and conditioning and they are good as new. I hadn’t bought an LV or Fendi prior to these but their performance is making me think I need to consider more bags from these brands.

60+ pair of shoes or bags?

I have 60+ bags. (Though I also have way more than 60 pairs of shoes). About half of those are "daily drivers," so to speak and I'm really good at rotating through them all. The others are formal, seasonal or other niche uses. For those, I really don't care if I get regular use out of them so long as I have options when I need them.

But, even with that half, I need to be careful about what I keep and make sure I'm not splitting wears, and I also need to keep the whole collection manageable.

Like a lot of people said, I try not to hold myself to a number, because that seems so arbitrary, but I'm at my max in both closet space and brainspace to keep track of what I have.

If you’re happy with what you’re doing, that’s all that matters. I won’t hold myself to a specific number, it feels too arbitrary to me. I know a specific number would result in me selling a less-used bag and then regretting it later. Case in point, my Chanel Reissue 227 in Dark Blue, a bag that gets used rarely and that under a strict bag quota, I “should” sell. But I can’t shake the sense that I’ll regret it if I do, and with Chanel prices continuing to skyrocket, I either wouldn’t replace it, or I would at a big financial loss. So it stays, at least for now. Maybe I’ll decide to sell it at some point, but if I do, it won’t be because of an arbitrary number of bags that I’ve “allowed” myself to have.

OTOH, I wouldn’t be comfortable with a collection so large I forgot about bags I already have. So I’m trying to be mindful of what gets used, and consider getting rid of things that don’t work.

I’m the same way re. usage. If I have a bag that I don’t wear much now but has been worn and loved a lot in the past, I won’t get rid of that bag. My problem is bags that I have loved, but don’t wear anymore. I keep thinking I shouldn’t get rid of them because maybe I’ll regret it. At what point do you realize you’ve moved on from a style and it’s time to let go? :confused1:

[emoji23][emoji23][emoji23] I do forget about some bags that I have, but all of them are no brands or very misc brands. I keep track of most contemporary and premiere which I deem “more pricey”. [emoji28]

I don't have a number but realistically I have too many bags for all of them to get much use. If I divide the number of days in a year by the number of bags, each one wouldn't be allotted very many days. That just seems wasteful to me. That is the only reason I want to have less. I think at minimum, each bag should be carried for 2 weeks a year. That means I should only have 26 bags. I can keep a few more than that for special occasion bags or vintage bags that are collectibles rather than bags I want to use. But I'm way over that amount.

None of my bags were expensive, so the money isn't the issue. Still, it doesn't make sense to sell something at a big loss if I even use it once in awhile. That's the problem I have right now. The bags I would reduce from my collection wouldn't bring in much money if I were to sell them, so maybe it is better just to keep them. For example, I have this bag that cost $25. It has fur trim. DH hates it. I love carrying it a few times a year just to tease him!

It's so hard to do!
Do you have other bags that you like more than the ones you loved but don't wear anymore - have other bags replaced The Unworn in your affections?
If you have others you like more - then it might be time to let it go.
Is The Unworn really pricey and you'll feel guilty if you let it go?
This is where I struggle. But this year I did sell my very first LV (memories of Hong Kong and how thrilled I was to be in possession of such a marvelous bag) and I actually felt relieved when it was gone. I hadn't carried it in years, but couldn't let it go because of the price and those memories. This thread helped me realize that it was time to release it into the wild.

We won't talk about my closet though - that's where I *really* struggle. Oof. :whut:
(what if I *neeeeeeeeed* it?!?)

This! This is where I struggle. I have this gorgeous Hermes Piano, and the leather is softer than tissue and it smells wonderful ... and I don't really use it anymore and would like to sell it, but the offers I got were so low it's not worth my while. So I still have it.

Also, your fur-trimmed bag sounds amazing. I have visions of a combo bag/muff.

That's sort of what it looks like! It is so soft. I love petting it. It is kind of ridiculous looking.

Yes, I have that problem of selling something expensive for peanuts. If I do that, I'll know exactly how much money I lost. I know you are supposed to think of it like you recouped some of your costs. Someone called it the stupid tax, the money you have to pay for your mistakes.
