Thank you, I teach to fashion students at university. The history is the easy part. TPF helps me too, things change so fast.

1987 and the late 1980s was very much the invest in classics era.

Hermes'
Birkin was only a few years old but already a big hit at that time, however they are still stupidly expensive. Hermes novelty bags however were also very popular and very much evoke the obsession with couture which are not so expensive now. see posts 143-6 here https://forum.purseblog.com/threads/vintage-style-bags-pics-only.99980/page-10 . My Escale (like the stock photo, post 147, same page as above) is from around that era too.
These types of bags can still be found for under $1.5K. Look for 'Q' in a circle for 1987.

The Chanel Classic Flap was another 'it' bag and though the style went out of fashion in the late 1990s it came back with an a vengeance and is now iconic. . KL designed the CC Classic lock in the 1980s and it was a whole new wave of logo-mania. Especially popular in Japan. Actually any quilted Chanel shoulder bag with a chain would be perfect. Though still expensive, a vintage one from this time is good value (and many say better quality) than recent ones. The code you will look for will begin with '0'.

LV's Speedys were HUGE too as was anything to do with Audrey Hepburn who first popularised the bag. Vintage Speedys are usually to be found for a reasonably good price. Even the month of manufacture will be shown just look which number follows '87' in the serial so 877XX will mean July 1987. Just add the month to your year. The 2 last characters will refer to which factory is was made. Later in the decade the factory letters go before the date as in XX899.

Gucci was also huge, particularly the signature print. Judith Leiber crystal novelty clutches were all the rage for the evening. Let me know if you want to look for another brand too.
Great info and of course, interesting. So, hypothetically, if someone was born in 1960, they would just look for a dinosaur?? [emoji56]

Oh I really have to check these out. Thanks for the reminder about baby bag lol, I had not even thought of the fact that I would need somewhere to hang the bag if I'm driving without DH

Wow that sounds like a really fun and interesting class! Thank you for always being so willing to share your knowledge, I love learning these things from you

Love your kate Spade!

And yes! Haha the worse thing to do is have to pick up a mess of baby stuff spilling out with a baby! This hook keeps everything in the seat or hanging behind the seat. :)

I actually helped someone find a 1960 Kelly recently  I love when someone wants their birth year (don't want to be reminded of mine though :p). Even though the Kelly only started being called that in 1956, you can find them back to the '40s (I have a 1952 Kelly) and even the 30s although at that point they were a bit different and not date stamped AFAIK.
1960 is a spring chicken!

Ha! I never thought of getting my birth year until Bake just mentioned it and thought that's a neat idea. This could be an interesting little adventure, thanks for the reply! And the spring chicken comment! [emoji56]

The one I am looking at now can use a good cleaning.

I assume more inexpensive ones need more work, reflected in the price.

I'm willing to pay up to $1000 on top of the bag for refurbishment, it's just how much should I limit myself for the bag itself?
A question I can't answer. Papertiger will know, her extensive knowledge, especially with vintage should give you reasonable dollar ranges to shoot for. Do you know which bag you would like to find?

I'm open to any vintage Chanel, Hermes, LV, or anything really. Lol there were some great bags throughout those years, just by scrolling through the usual resellers.

I don't want to keep myself on one style only, since there's been discontinued bags as well.

Not helpful. I'm so indecisive right now, I was surprised that I found anything to be honest.
