Happy Father's Day to those of you who are celebrating with your favorite dad.

We're headed out to a very late brunch and I'm taking my new metallic Dior babies with me. The silver pairs nicely with the teal dress I just slipped into. So glad I decided to ignore my head and follow my heart to get this bag!!!!

That is a very good choice!
Late-1960s Gucci handbag designed by Rodolpho Gucci. He made the bags with semi-precious stones. I have one but it needs a friend [emoji23]
That's a gorgeous selection!
My one bag would be a large trash bag with the properties of Dr. Who's telephone booth. I'd put all my bags in there and be ready to go. [emoji38] I can travel anywhere and pick up clothes along the way as long as I have my bags and my bras (I have an odd size and I buy great bras that I can't get everywhere. LOL!)

Hmmmm...but if I only could take one bag it would be my gold perforated metallic lamb Chanel Boy. I know it sounds impractical but it is my favorite bag and I use it a lot already. If I'm living in a world where Dr. Who is real, why not be stylish and adventurous?

If I am forced to be practical it would be my silver Jimmy Choo biker bag or my new Fendi BTW. Both are comfy and hold a ton while still looking good. [emoji3]
This is a WONDERFUL bag. If fits you perfectly in your modeling shots. I'm off to buy one now. I'm in love!!!
Not exactly. I don't really have many slouchy / looks great broken in bags because I prefer structured bags. But, I'd actually like to change that. I'd love one smooshy bag with yummy chewy leather that I can take everywhere. I'm looking at Balenciaga for that reason.
So I'll answer your question this way. The bags that I see me having forever even though they'll have to be cared for and get repaired or refreshed are my gold Boy and my m/l silver lamb chanel classic flap. I adore these bags and - other than a couple of black bags - use them the most in my collection.
Brilliant! I love that I can ask this question and get such clever (and stylish) responses!
This is a tough one. Herbag PM; I am thinking practicality also. At first I thought Picotin MM, but the top is fairly open. For adventures, I can close my Herbag and carry it on my shoulder easily too! [emoji23]

Beautiful bag, msd! I didn't realize that the color was olive green; gorgeous!
I suppose an open bag might spill a content or two when jumping between dimensions...
@msd_bags happy early birthday to you as well!! Great scarf additions that was so very lucky! And I love the furla even more than when I first saw it. I didn't realize it's size and looks so good!

@Pessie beautiful pandora! And definitely a food for thought question - I'd say my miu miu hobo cuz it's sort of already falling apart lol, but if by choice, probably my vintage speedy.

@solange what a great question! I think I'd have to go with my navy nylon dooney & Bourke satchel- it zips up and has a strap for crossbody, and super lightweight. Mot exciting but will sure be super functional and practical to join the Doctor

@ksuromax Egypt has always been a goal destination for me, even as a small child. One day!
Good planning! [emoji162]
I never watch the show, but I'd guess my trusty traveling crossbody Husky.
I think that's a great choice!

I have a Patricia Nash in what I like to think of as a TARDIS blue, but the additional crossbody strap comes unsnapped too easily for some of those adventures. I think I need to reevaluate my choice. I think it would be one of my Cole Haan bags, though. They're attractive, roomy (even small ones) and can withstand abuse while still looking great.

Thank you for your wonderful answers!

Gucci goes back to 1921 (although bags before the 1940s are very difficult but I am guessing your bday was not before then!). If you let me know your era (if not your year) I can tell you what was at the height of fashion then and which brand you should be seeking out.

As far as I know you can only tell Chanel dates back to 1985-'88 when they started numbers serial numbers on bags starting with 0XXXXX

Hermes bags also have dates on their bags and going back to 1945 (I have a bag that is 'F' so is from 1951. Kellys only have a stamp from 1971 (my BBK has a 'B' in a round circle which makes it 1972).

LV have no date codes further back than 1980

Between us I'm sure we can help you work out the dates of any LV, H or Chanel. For Gucci I have my own methods (much more complicated).

Ooh... that sounds so cool! Can I join in? [emoji4]

Thank you, I teach to fashion students at university. The history is the easy part. TPF helps me too, things change so fast.

1987 and the late 1980s was very much the invest in classics era.

Hermes'
Birkin was only a few years old but already a big hit at that time, however they are still stupidly expensive. Hermes novelty bags however were also very popular and very much evoke the obsession with couture which are not so expensive now. see posts 143-6 here https://forum.purseblog.com/threads/vintage-style-bags-pics-only.99980/page-10 . My Escale (like the stock photo, post 147, same page as above) is from around that era too.
These types of bags can still be found for under $1.5K. Look for 'Q' in a circle for 1987.

The Chanel Classic Flap was another 'it' bag and though the style went out of fashion in the late 1990s it came back with an a vengeance and is now iconic. . KL designed the CC Classic lock in the 1980s and it was a whole new wave of logo-mania. Especially popular in Japan. Actually any quilted Chanel shoulder bag with a chain would be perfect. Though still expensive, a vintage one from this time is good value (and many say better quality) than recent ones. The code you will look for will begin with '0'.

LV's Speedys were HUGE too as was anything to do with Audrey Hepburn who first popularised the bag. Vintage Speedys are usually to be found for a reasonably good price. Even the month of manufacture will be shown just look which number follows '87' in the serial so 877XX will mean July 1987. Just add the month to your year. The 2 last characters will refer to which factory is was made. Later in the decade the factory letters go before the date as in XX899.

Gucci was also huge, particularly the signature print. Judith Leiber crystal novelty clutches were all the rage for the evening. Let me know if you want to look for another brand too.

Oh my! This is amazing!

I need to watch the show! What you said sound interesting!

The further back you go the better (the handbag quality). Just think Audrey Hepburn at the height of her powers, Marilyn at her most interesting. and Jackie O and Grace Kelly as style leaders...

That's totally fabulous. Although I think women have more choices now, but I wholeheartedly agree that all the quality and "finish" were all there back in those times. One of the women I know went to finishing school in Switzerland when she was young. Can't you imagine? In the age where, as a women, your job is to look good and prim. I'm all for women's right and girl's power, but this kind of stuff amaze me still. (And makes me sad everytime I see youngsters presenting themselves as a street walkers on social media thinking they're the coolest person on the block. [emoji29])

How about 1979? [emoji4]

I found the missing two charms! And more missing charms! Haha.

Some were on a bag, some were in a bag cuz I still haven't gotten it stamped.

And! My new yellow luggage tag!
View attachment 3735989

That should complete my bag decorations.

You know. Until I buy more [emoji28]
Love all of them especially your new luggage tag! It's such a stunning and happy color :)
Summery is exactly what my bag looks like! Balenciaga Day in Apple Green, plus H scarf
 you wear green so well!
I love your top and your adorable backpack.
Thanks dc! Glad to hear your trade show bag is working out well

Well, I will offer up a bag that I could use some different styling ideas for. It was a gift from DH; I chose it. I wore it a lot initially; but then it became a closet sitter. It's still in excellent condition.

It brings back special memories and a very special time in our lives, so I do not plan on selling it ... at least not for now. It is currently my only obviously branded bag.

Some ways I would style it, but I would like more ideas!

What a special bag! Love that it holds memories and stories. I really like the second outfit you posted. Clean and classic. I think the mono print will go well in outfits with neutral colors and clean, tailored cuts. Nothing too busy since the mono is already a print. Here's some photos I grabbed from pinterest :)

How about 1979? [emoji4]

Mid-Late 1970s was all about the feisty but glamourous ladies on TV with long legs and even longer hair. American Gigolo was released in 1980 but filmed in 1979 and typifies the aspirational look of the time. Disco was by then international and a jet set life was the aim, everything was glossy, shiny, lean and clean. Gone were the crazy colours of the early 1970s, instead a neutral palette with added accents of metallics. Swinging shoulder bags and lady like proportions, and the reemergence of the sharp shoulder on a proper jacket but on a narrow cut silhouette complete with the new-look pencil skirt. Silky shirt dresses and high heel sandals worn with fine delicate jewellery, all with sensual, nonchalant flair. Fitness and dance was also spotlighted in fashion and long lean sweaters worn with skinny jeans (then called drainpipes) in dark denim, white or unusual colours (esp Gloria Vanderbilt) worn with leg warmers over - heels (like broadway dancers rehearsing). Designer denim was born and laid back elegance was key.

Gucci brought out the Gucci Accessories Collection which brought their signature print to bags and small items (before more used on luggage). This made their logo more accessible and reached a new set of young people at the lower price-point. Hermes' Evelyne was designed in 1978, another attempt from H to catch-up with the casual world. Hermes represented 'old and stuffy' during the 1970s and commissioned many bags to stay in the game. As well as the Evie, there was also the Garden Party and neat clutches like my `Lady Clutch (1979). In 1979, Lew Fankfort joined Coach to transform it into a global force it is today, unadorned Coach leather shoulder bags created a middle market where quality and affordability joined together.

Larger day clutches and sleek shiny long clutches capture the late 1970s mood. Also, unadorned, soft leather shoulder bags from small to medium in earth colours or dark neutrals.

I think the best thing about living now is women can choose to be any combination of things. Being ladylike and well groomed can go right along with driven and powerful. And casual and comfy can go with brilliant and insightful.
That being said certain things never change. Street walker, disheveled or Cruella D'evil mean spirited are bad choices for everyone.

Great looks Liznaj, I love the third. The sexy mini and heels juxtaposed with the conservative blazer and top is adorable. I don't wear anything that short but cheer on anyone who can.

Thanks, papertiger!

I plan to use this as more of a carefree/casual bag this Summer. This should help me get more use from it!

Monogram works really well with neutrals and any summer clothing!
