H used to clean their scarves but recently stopped doing it. Pre-1990s scarves that are not already a little 'worse for wear' I dry clean at a specialist place in South London because the dye is supposedly less stable. I'm sure you could hand-wash earlier scarves too, it's just a few vintage scarves have been HGs and took a long time to find pristine. Everything else I hand-wash one at a time in a little Ecover and barely warm water (rinse twice). Hand-washing my scarves was like seeing the light for the first time, they come out so much better than dry cleaning and I no longer think about choosing more practical colours. No ironing needed and in the sunshine they take about 5 minute to dry after rolling in a towel. There's a long thread about it in the H forum which is very helpful.

They all think I'm a bit "tetched" in the head for my passion for pretty things. For example, I was just on the phone last night with one of my very closest friends. She owns one ratty purse that needs to be shot and put out of its misery. She said she wants me to help her buy one new "good" one. I was floored. She can afford to buy whatever she wants. But fashion is sooooo not a priority.
