I was mainly a Chanel CF gal when it came to Chanel, but the exquisite-avoiding-gauche gradation of mixed metals and pillowy texture in the C19 kept calling to me, plaintive and longing. The siren song. You know. Even its CC logo is something I love, now.

Serious Q, asking for neutral, cordial, polite opinions: I’ve done my research on the c19 (it’ll likely be medium size for me) IRL and on the Internet (…that bastion of guides, unshakeable truth and hotheaded quarrels; occasionally a voice of measured resources and reason) and I still cannot fully get a grasp on the pros and cons of (shiny) goatskin vs lambskin other than establishing basic facts such as release season/year.

So I’m turning to the learned, stylish, knowledgable sweethearts and walking encyclopaedias of TPF in my time of need: if any kind souls are willing to help a poster out… of lambskin vs goatskin, which do you prefer/recommend, and why? I have access to both and will choose a dark color. Just looking for pro/cons of each (or the ones you own / are familiar with), advantages/disadvantages, what in your subjective opinion looks and wears the best. Note that personally I prefer a lush leather look to a matte finish. Just seeking measured and maybe gushing opinions from the friendly, helpful, pragmatic yet fashionable persons and Chanel lovers here on goatskin vs lambskin c19s.

I would be profoundly grateful.:love:

(Edit: I know there have been a few scattered mentions throughout the 208pg thread but they date from different time periods, and I was hoping to ask your indulgence on what your personal consensus would be now in 2023.

I have the lambskin in black and initially I wanted the goat as I Hurd goat is more durable. However when I purchased mine 2 years ago they didn’t have them in goat unless I went the used market. Having used my bag for 2 years, I can say I love the lamb. It’s soft and squishy with some shine but also very durable. It still looks brand new and is a bag I feel comfortable enough hauling to Italy and London on trips.

My story is similar. Wanted goat, could only access lambskin when I bought it in Feb 2021 (boutique purchase). It is my favourite CC bag, understated, even in it’s gorgeous ‘boldness’. I am seeing some wear on corners, but I do NOT baby this bag…she gets used, and loved!

@KensingtonUK & @BigOnBags , thanks heaps for your thoughtful replies and info! I’m thrilled you love your bags and that the lambskin worked out perfectly for you!

One thing I remain slightly befuddled about are the varying explanations of ‘shiny goatskin’ (never been explained to me properly tbh) - does anyone have insights?

I don’t get the shiny goatskin but I have had black and burgundy on crumpled calfskin patent leather and it is incredible. I’m surprised they didn’t produce more colors in this leather and I think it was only for one season. It seems to maintain its structure better than lamb or goat but I do use pillows for sturage and organizers for use. No signs of wear at all, look and smell brand new. I always get compliments on them

I have the small in goatskin which I purchased in 2020 from the boutique. It was one of the last 2 seasons which had the goatskin. In-between they had 1-2 seasons in which they made the 19 in lambskin. I definitely wanted the bag in goatskin due to its durability. So far, my 19 still looks like new. No corner wear or scratches. Goatskin has been very carefree and I don’t have to baby it. I know that the lambskin on the 19 has a different coating than the lambskin on the CF, so you don’t have to worry too much, should you get lambskin. However, if I had to make the choice again, I’d still pick goatskin over lambskin.

Hi -I first wanted goatskin but only Lambskin was available so I bought a excellent condition small black goatskin from Fashionphile- when I received it I noticed the wrinkling right away - before sending it back my SA called and said she had a small black lambskin that just came in (21A) series. I Brought it home and I, my husband and friends all liked the Lambskin more! the goatskin was a tad more shiny but the Lambskin has a beautiful sheen (like a light gloss) sent the used goatskin back. After having it for 2 &1/2 years I can say this lambskin on Chanel 19 is very durable. I have NO scratches - NO wrinkling and NO wear!! I do use a bag organizer as It gives my bag a more structured look.

Can anyone help or direct me to a thread where I can get some advice please? It’s worrying me 🙈 thank you 👍
I checked my 19 and the seams are to the side and not noticeable…this isn’t right. If a boutique buy, reach out to your SA. I understand they will do repairs if warranted. Note your bag will be gone for quite some time. Otherwise maybe a qualified leather repair shop? Leather Surgeons in the US is highly reputable.
