I look back at scarves I coveted years ago but didn't get. What did I like about them? In those days it was mostly the colors. Now it's all about a design that resonates with me in a CW that works for me to wear. I'm not really a collector because there are iconic designs that a true collector would want, that I just don't like.
I've just made a pile of scarves that are all similar color combinations and that have the same effect when tied (or I tend to wear them with the same outfits). So, why keep all of them? Because I really like each design. ACK. This is hopeless!!!
Yes!! You said it best, moma: "it's all about a design that resonates with me in a CW that works for me to wear." And I disagree that you're not a true collector - you are, it's just that you have discriminating taste and parameters to collecting. [emoji16]
No makeup, working from home this AM, just arrived: les Amazones! I've been looking for the right CW, and this is it.

Congrats, cookiefiend! Or shall I say "scarffiend"??? that moniker is more apropos, no? [emoji23]
You two are cracking me up because that stage of scarf-love is so fabulous, as are your two beautiful acquisitions! Love that 'grail about to arrive deliciousness so much.
Les Amazones in pink is totally delicious Moma

, and your Mousseline is adorable Cookie fiend.

I realise how far I've slipped when I want to buy simpler non H scarves despite having overflowing scarf drawers . Hope I get reinfected because hunting for those silks was the main reason to get out of bed in the morning !!!!
Hi froufrou! Ohhh, yess, that grail-in-the-mail feeling is intoxicating. I have been known to check mail tracking 1000 times a day and cursing at the app - "Why you keep sitting in Podunk, Arkansas?!?!? Get on that plane to mama!"
It's a day for grail mail! I'm all "patience, grasshopper," and now I have broken my wait-for-exactly-what-you-want rule and am waiting for a plisse experiment to arrive. It was such a good price, and the design seems like it could work OK as a plisse, and, well, I figured that when the pleats get loose, I'll just be all the happier, because I'll see the design I wanted in the first place. Moma, those are such skin-and-face-flattering colors in that Amazones, maybe you'll never bother wearing makeup again!
I do this too! I am not sure why. I could say it's so that I can get a sense of how much that design is going for these days and how often it shows up, but that's not entirely it. It's more like Russian roulette: if there isn't a wildly-below-market-price grail in the revolver chamber of sold today, I am relieved. And when there is one there. . . well, I have a chance to practice reminding myself what is important in life.
. . . and I am also a big fan of petting mine! especially the vintage 70s. That sweet treat of a new mousseline looks like it would feel the way sunshine looks on a china cup. Pearlsnjeans pointed out that scarves can have a security-blanket aspect, and they sure do for me. I am well aware that I turn to that little bit of beauty and softness sometimes as an escape from a not-so-beautiful world. The hunt is also part of that escape for me, I admit.
Ooh, can't to see which plisse you got! I confess that's a style missing from my collection. I'm plisse-curious but not enough to experiment. Maybe I need to go to scarf college, haha.
I mostly peruse sold items for a couple reasons: 1. Photos. If it's a reputable seller, then I might save photos so I can better authenticate later when another opportunity comes along. Plus nice photos of grail scarves make me drool. 2. Pricing. If it was a reasonable price, I fantasize that *I* was the winning bidder. (I confess I might while away a leeetle too much time in this way.) Plus it gives me hope that another opportunity might come along.
I used to pet my csgms too because they were so so soft - until a damn hangnail ever-so-slightly snagged one. Ooh, was i pissed. No more petting for me.
Really?
I'm the opposite too
I wish I'd got to H scarves sooner and snapped up all those amazing scarves I missed, I hate not having some of the old scarves. Not to mention being stupidly so tentative and imposing silly rules on myself like max 2 a season when I should have bought 4 or 5 cws in a design that was outstanding.
I know, right?! There are so many designs I wasn't able to get from just 2-3 years ago. I didn't realize then that they were unusually wonderful seasons in terms of designs. I thought that every season would offer so many beauties that I'd be in a perpetual state of scarf-arousal but then the current season came along and I got no scarf-gasms. Zip. Zilch. It's true a couple designs were quite nice, but "quite nice" doesn't do it after experiencing the fireworks and meltiness as I did with previous seasons. (Apologies to those loving the current season - it's just different strokes for different folks!)
But as for rules - I had a no dupes rule and max per season rule, too - those have gone out the window, just as you said. Right now only thing that keeps me in check is my budget!
This is where I am now = very happy
Can't say I'm a very active HG-seeker so possibly I could have crossed the last couple of my list had I been.
I don't remember exactly the time span (I'd have to go through this thread) I've certainly ticked off 8 'HGs' off my list (a pair came as an unexpected 'double' so OK really 7 different designs). These were all scarf designs that I missed out on 'before my time' and just one when I missed a cw (peg d H). That's quite a lot IMO, I do feel a sense of achievement and though none of my scarves are going anywhere those scarves represent some sense of triumph.
Prob only 4 of those designs were on many others' lists too, but I have a scarf-fairy godsister (or scarf-crack dealer, depending if you're my DH or not). So, for sure, 3 highly desirable scarves only made their way to me because of someone's kind spirit. I am very grateful and thank my lucky stars.
[emoji23][emoji23][emoji23] to "scarf-crack dealer." And I love how we look out for each other's grails. But watch out if your grail is also my grail! Then my claws will come out. [emoji23]
