Would you bring a high end bag to college classes?

Okay, welll, I don't mean as a school bag, but in addition to.

I like to carry designer bags because they make me feel good. I like to be noticed, but I don't compete. I don't even compete for grades - that's silly.

I go to a different kind of school. It's a community college, so everyone is showered and some have work right afterward. There are a lot of Guccis, Coach, LVs and a lot ARE authentic. There are no dorms, so no one comes in PJs or unshowered.

When I move to a dorm (at a new school) next year, I'm also bringing my bags. I can't live without my bags, but I'm also bringing a trunk or something to lock them in.

I basically decided that yes I MUST bring my Paddington to school or else it might effect my attendance. Well, I don't know BUT it will absolutely make me desire going every single day if I bring my Paddy. I'm just so in love.

I'm leaving the lock off though, and she won't get damaged at all - I'm extremely careful.

Anyone agree with this?

Oh and my school tote is by Coach.

I've been in a university setting for over 20 years, both as a student and as a professional, and I can say with some confidence that other students have a lot more to worry about than what bag you're carrying (and if they don't, they'll flunk out soon enough and won't be able to judge you!). Carry what makes *you* feel confident, can take the load you need, and doesn't leave you with a backache at the end of the day.

LOL I have to admit, if it's too heavy, I'll have to stop.

But I "worry" about bags, and I do great in school!

NEVER, I mean NEVER leave a bag in a parked (even locked) car. There are thieves that just know a woman is going to leave her purse in the car at places such as school, the beach, sporting events etc and they break into several cars in a row stealing the bags.

I say if you want to carry the bag to school, just do it!!! Life is too short to constantly worry about what is appropriate or not.

Thanks a lot Max. I didn't even think about that, like they probably could even be spying on you to watch you put it in the trunk or something.

Now I feel really bad for putting another bag worth $1,000 in the trunk when we went to Butterfly World and when I went to look at puppies - lol. I need to bring a trashable bag on vaca with me, from now on (in addition to one I like).

Thanks so much. (((((((MaxHavoc))))))))

Well carrying an expensive bag to class or the mall or the grocery store or the Dr office- what is the big deal with any of them? We all lover designers bags, or just bags in general, so what is the huge difference? I am kinda lost and don't see the big deal about this :shrugs: And our countless talks of why people carry designers bags, many people do admit to some extent it makes them feel good to have a designer bag, no?

Anyhow, I went to a private High School and the only way to stand out a bit was our bag- I had a Prada Nylon Messenger bag. Then I used that and a Coach Tote and an LV tote for college. I used those bags for school because I like them- just like I like to take my nice bags on errands with me.

The Paddington may get a bit heavy, mine really gets heavy after a while (I have a regular and a Tote). Don't leave it in your car, even hidden- if someone sees you do this they may be more apt to break in. I'd stick with the totes and carry the Paddy as an everyday bag rather than school bag!

I agree with this.

I carried designer and nondesigner bags while in college. One of my favorite bags was a cloth tote bag by Rachel Comey (a gift from her fashion show) so it was both "designer" and not. Generally I didn't carry a purse to class, but I definitely carried one on campus. Almost all the students lived in dorms on campus, and it's a small, unique school (reminded me of boarding school) so I know my experience is different. Some people wore head-to-toe designer. Some people wore pajamas. Some carried ultra expensive limited edition bags. Many carried backpacks. I don't think most people cared either way what anyone else was carrying. It was freedom of self-expression. At a larger school, I'm sure it would have been different though....

I used my balenciaga city for a whole semester my junior year. It was initially the only bag I'd brought to school and it was large and could go on my shoulder - so I used it religiously (tucked the tassles all into the bag) I thought nothing of it because no one around here knows designers without logos. To the majority it was just a black leather bag.

I'm a grad student and teach undergrad classes (my students call my professor but technically I'm not until I finish earning my phd) so on the days I teach, I rotate between some of my nicer bags because I'm dressed up anyway.

But I also often carry functional canvas totes because they are lightweight and I can lug books around in them easily.

I never have carried a backpack.. .even when I was in high school I didn't care for them.

Carry your bag if you like. You bought it because you love it and want people to see it, right?? It isn't a competition. I say as long as you are not going to damage it then carry it!!! Feel good about it!!!!! When I was in school I carried my Coach and Gucci bags and my backpack. I have to carry a handbag everyday - I might as well love the one I'm carrying!!

I'd take a designer bag to school if it was big enough and good to carry. But I definitely wouldn't take a designer bag to school just to show off! That's stupid. Bags should be bought because you like the look, not just because others might envy you cause' its Chloe >:S

I do and I'm not the only one. Just today I saw a vintage French Co. Speedy and the small black/white Chanel tote.
I took my LV Damier Speedy today just to feel out my classes since today was the first day, but I'll be carrying my LV Batignolles Horizontal and Cabas Mezzo soon. They're my biggest bags and I'm going to need the space for my books!

Maybe Im in the minority, but I took just one class for fun (already have a degree) and I carried my designer bags. I wasn't doing it to "show off" but that's what I own. I didn't need a backpack or anything so I carried them. Yes, college is for learning, but I don't see how that applies here exactly...

Carry what YOU want to carry IMHO.

I take my Chloe paddy to school just because im so obsessed with it... the people at my school dont even notice the name, just that its a "nice bag". It holds notebooks, so its functional. I took the lock off tho to help with the extra weight... :D

I carry a black Coach business tote to class, but only because it's durable, it's hardly noticeable that it's a Coach. Personally I think school is a place to stand out with your brains, and not with a designer bag. But to each their own, I'm not stopping anybody from carrying theirs! ;)

I totally disagree with this. Why would you laugh at somebody just because they took the time to look put together? I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Just because other people prefer to look like slobs in class, doesn't mean that those who try to look decent and put together should be made fun of. I say, wear whatever you feel like wearing to school! If you are proud of your bag, then go for it! Personally, I do not carry my LV to school just because I don't want to abuse it and I want it to stay nice. Express yourself however you feel and don't worry about what other people think.

I agree with Ashmi. It sounds jealous and shallow to laugh because someone comes in to class looking like they stepped of America's Next Top Model. I admire someone who has the time to do that but also get good grades. If it makes them happy and they aren't distracting me and are getting good grades what difference should that make to anyone?

To answer the OP, don't bring your bags to class to garner attention or show off. As long as you're bag is functional and you like it that's all that matters, highend or not!

I am far from jealous of anyone who goes to class looking like they just stepped off the runway, I just think it's silly to get all dolled up for class, it's just not the right environment you know? I mean if you go to fashion school or another school where a lot of the students dress up to the nines, then fine, strut yourself like a model but if not, you're just asking for the attention.
