Would you bring a high end bag to college classes?

I don't get going to class in pajamas. That's really kind of gross. In my undergrad, for the most part, you WOULD see ladies going to 8:00 classes looking like models. That's just how we did it there. It wasn't about impressing someone. It was about looking and feeling good. That's just the Spelman way.

To the OP, I don't see anything wrong with carrying a designer bag, but your reasoning is what is off to me. Why are you trying so hard to impress others? It just seems kind of lame. And on the note of the baby bag you like to flash, how impressive is a baby bag going to be anyway? It's a BABY bag. NOt a designer handbag.

it's a southern thing! UGA is like a fashion show every day. going out in sweats makes me feel like a slob, so i don't do it, and it's generally frowned upon here. you stick out more if you're wearing sweats than if you took 10 seconds to pick out something cute. i haven't worn tennis shoes to anywhere but the gym in years. i mean, come on, we can all dress ourselves...

the OP's reasoning is what bothers me as well. who cares what other people think about what you're carrying? i always think that girls with giant messengers AND purses look awkward and not at all glamorous. i carry whatever bag i have that makes what i'm carrying easy to carry and less of a strain - THAT's how you look fabulous, not by schlepping around every piece of designer crap that you own. i don't care how much you paid for a bag, i would NOT be impressed if you came in to class as you described. i can guarantee you that anyone that would like the bag on its own would also think that you were trying way too hard.

leave your paddy at home, it's not a school bag.

I'm in school too, and never bring any handbag costing over 500 dollars to school or school events (once I carried a Bottega Veneta to a school auction, but since it's so understated, it seemed ok).
I've noticed some girls carrying LV and Gucci to school, but for some reason, it just looks silly to me in school setting.

i didn't own any high end bags when I was going to school, especially since I just started collecting a yr ago... however, if I did have the bags that I have now when I was going to college, yes, I would have used them... except for my H bags..

I have to agree that competition should be for marks - but having said that I went to classes how I felt, sometimes dressed up, sometimes super casual (BUT NEVER pyjamas, or sweats - sorry i don't get this at all, why sweats which are for the house or sports when you can wear jeans??).quote]

I've had the occasional student come to my classes in pajamas, bathrobe, and slippers, and sometimes with the sheetmarks still fresh on rosy cheeks. I don't much care--as long as they're actually in class, I really don't care if they come in nude--but the stares and muttering of the other students generally ensures it doesn't happen again.

Last semester I went to school from 11 am - 10 pm soooo no I didn't carry any designer bag. I had soooo many heavy books to carry around so I had to use a bookbag. This semester, I only have 1-2 classes per day so I only carry 1-2 light books and a thin notebook. This allows me to carry a purse around and the books in my arm... so yes I do carry my designer bags to school this semester, but never monogram. It's too flashy.

I've been in a university setting for over 20 years, both as a student and as a professional, and I can say with some confidence that other students have a lot more to worry about than what bag you're carrying (and if they don't, they'll flunk out soon enough and won't be able to judge you!). Carry what makes *you* feel confident, can take the load you need, and doesn't leave you with a backache at the end of the day.

Totally agree!

that made me LOL

When I was in college, I carried my trusty Jansports backpack and use a Coach wrislet as a wallet. Even when I was in grad school, I only carried a black laptop case and a backpack to school. To me, school is where you learn and not to be distracted by your designer bags. Leave the distractions home when you log on to tPF. :p

And don't leave your valuables in your car. College students these days will steal anything. I had my fair share of stolen wallets and stolen books right out of my own backpack while I wasn't watching.

yup. but nothing with monogrammed anything. luckily enough the vast majority of people in my department have no clue what a bottega or balenciaga is anyway so they just say they look nice or that the leather looks really soft if they comment at all.

Well, I carry designer bags when I go for lectures in university, but I carry it for me. If someone compliments me on it, all well and good, but the world wouldn't end if no one did... I always make it a point to look immaculate when I go for classes, because if I don't look good, I don't feel good... But that's just me... What's the point of having nice bags if you can't use them on a daily basis? Plus, I prefer to be stylish even when I'm fighting for the best marks in class... ;)

i think it looks kind of silly when girls carry purses in addition to schoolbags to class. a lot of people here (including myself) have the big longchamp totes, so it's nicer than a backpack. but i wouldn't bring a purse
