Would you bring a high end bag to college classes?

I see no problem in bringing a designer bag to school, so long as you take care of it. I see a lot of college students where I live (Ireland) carrying designer bags. Mind you, they're usually fakes. I think the Irish are more practical about these things, and probably carry copies of bags they love in case anything untoward happens to them.

I'm out of college now and the only designer handbag I owned at the time was a Bracher Emden that my boyfriend bought me for Christmas - it is more of a dressy-up handbag as it's quite small so no, I never used it on campus.

I lived on campus too in the campus residences but security was very tight - we all were in a 4 or 5 bed apt, each with own bedroom & ensuite bathroom and all the bedrooms could only be accessed by swipe cards so it was pretty much the safest place on campus to be honest! So you could just leave your stuff in your room and be safe in the knowledge that your stuff was safe. I don't think I ever even brought a handbag on campus coz I'd just get up, have breakfast, get ready and then go over to lectures so I never really needed money for then as I'd be heading back to my apartment at lunch to cook my dinner or whatever.

So even if I did have a designer day handbag, I wouldn't have used it. I dressed so casually in college - big hoody sweatshirt and jeans and this Quicksilver backpack which I still have which is red, orange, yellow and white!! You could see me from the moon with it on coz it was so colourful! I still use it actually if I need a backpack which is the odd occasion here n there.

Yah the amount of fakes here is crazy! I think it's because they think it's crazy to spend hundreds or thousands on a bag when they can pick up a cheap ol fake instead or else they just cannot afford it.

Mind you, when I started buying designer handbags, someone said to me "what are you doing buying the real thing when you could buy so many fakes instead and anyway, all the rich women who buy handbags only buy fakes coz they are smart with their money" - I was like WHAT THE HELL?! That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard!!!!! It actually still is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. Why would you buy a fake if you can afford the actual authentic piece? And anyway, why would you be "smart with your money for buying a fake" or "not smart with your money for buying a designer piece"? I have to say, I was very offended by that comment.

I hold my head high knowing that the bags I buy are the real deal, not some cheap fake which supports the bad things in the world today!

I bring my Chloé Paddington tote with me to college.

When I was looking for a nice bag for college, I made sure it was sturdy, roomy, in a neutral colour and not very recognizable. This one is perfect for me! :smile1:

well i think it is more about form and function not a label per se ; but i carry a kate spade leather tote and coach leather wristlet. When my classes where lighter i carried a coach zip folio and D&B bucket bag . I have saw many girls with signature stripe coach totes and Dooney and bourke double handle totes and some Lv neverfulls and of course fake Chanel cambons; but mostly coach totes. I would say maybe you need to search for another tote b/c carrying two bags may weight you down. I defintely understand the feeling of carrying a bag you saved up for and bought but dont let that be you main concern. Like always, we buy these bags for them to get used ( thats the point of buying designer for quailty it is meant to take a beating ).

When I was in college, I can only remember one girl that I knew who carried a purse, period. And we all thought she was crazy. I went to a small, liberal arts college where everyone carried a backpack. Honestly, we all seemed to have our noses in our books and worried less about our handbags.

When I was in college, I only had one designer handbag - a Gucci I bought in Rome -which was totally not the right size for books or anything.

But if I'd had one that was "user-friendly" for classes, I would have definitely carried it. Back then, I was working my way through, living on mac and cheese and barely had enough quarters for the laundromat! But I would have carried a great bag proudly! Yes, I would have!

When I go to school (yes - at 52, I'm still going!), I carry my Coach because that's what I happen to carry every day. I wouldn't recommend using the Chloe' with lots of books, tho, as it is way too heavy! For that reason, my Paddy has been living in my closet. If you really want to use it, lose the lock 1st. IMO, it will still be too heavy.

Practical considerations set in for me here. What kind of classroom are you in? Would you have to put your bag on the floor? I see students put their feet on $500 Coach bags and it horrifies me...it's a purse, not a footrest. If your school has those nice tables for students, then I'd bring in anything I wanted...if it's those terrible little chair/desks, I'd be more cautious, unless there was a guaranteed seat for my bag. I wouldn't want a high end bag in my car, either. So I think, I'd go with environment and how the bag would be cared for in that environment....that's how I would decide.

Durability of the specific bag would be an issue, too. If it's a bag that needs to be babied in a leather that will not wear, then I'd leave it home from classes, too. How much do you carry? Will the bag withstand the weight? That sort of thing would enter into my decision making as well.

My 2 cents.

I don't think anyone else really cares what bag their classmates carry. If you're in a sorority, its more likely that your peers will care, but otherwise, it's irrelevant. Decide whether you want your designer bags exposed to the kind of wear and tear they will get from going to class every day.

I carried my Mulberry 'Roxanne' to school and found it really practical. I could fit my laptop and books in it and I didn't have to worry about it breaking. Carry your designer bag with pride and look down on the peasants who think you're showing off...
