Would you bring a high end bag to college classes?

I guess what I don't get is why you would be distracted from your class or not study hard enough when you get dressed nicely or take a nice bag? to me this doesn't make sense whatsoever. I was dressed nicely and went to hard classes - would the argument also be that my work schedule isn't hard enough bec I am thinking what to wear? sorry but sloppiness is not really a good argument there either.
as for the person sitting next to you worrying about money: the same will be the case in a work situation, or any other situation for that matter, maybe even at a family gathering or meeting with friends - would you take your Chanel to your first work assignment? personally I am far more concerned about what my boss thinks of me (possible jealousy bec that really leads to problems) than other students. based on any of this you shouldn't have such bags in the first place.

I'd say do whatever you like.

I'm in college, and I have a Coach baby bag as my school tote. Sometimes that's not enough (for showin' off) and I bring a Signature Coach or an LV with it. I love showing off my bags for some reason. LOTS of other girls at school bring designer bags, even though a lot are fake. Maybe THAT's a reason I like to do it!

Well I just got a Paddington and cannot get enough of it. I want to carry it every day, every day - but I'll have classes three days a week. Would you carry such a bag to school?

I could leave it in the car, hidden (even locked down with the key on ME lolol), but that's risky. It'll be fine with me in class though - I put the baby pad down underneath my school tote and handbag (if I have one) lol.

I just worry the Chloe' might be a bit showy or worth too much, even though I've brought my used LV Alma (showy but worth less even new, although sooo coveted, natch).. but I also want to be able to use it after class when I go out doing errands, too. I hate bringing a wristlet around afterward lol (not good enough!), and I don't really carry the baby bag as a handbag. Hmm.

Oh besides, the Paddington is so heavy and my school tote is even worse! Ahh. Waahh. Oh well! (Might it be better sans lock?)

On the upside to the last point, I could really lose all the weight I've gained the past year quickly!

So what do you think about bringing designer bags to classes, especially Paddingtons? Do any of you have stories (even stories about building muscle with Paddies lolol)?

Thanks.

I used to feel the way you do but my feelings now are if you have you should use them. in fact I realy won't buy a bag that I wouldn't take to work or wherever I go on a regular basis. Carry it...and enjoy it...and if anyone asks if its real...you know its not poliet to ask..ha ha

my advice:
do NOT use the chloe paddington as a school bag. dear god that bag is heavy enough without the weight of books, water bottle etc. I actually ended up selling my chloe paddington after trying to use it unsuccessfully both for school and leisure. Even without books and just my wallet my shoulder ached and i have swimmers shoulders!! now I use the Kooba Sloane which is still heavy but not half as bad as the paddington. Trust me you do not want some heavy bag with metal hardware chunking around as you rush to class. The paddington is hot but not functional at all as a school bag.

oh and about your question if the paddington is better sans lock...its not at all. the leather itself is really heavy not to mention theres also still the weight of the metal on the sides, the metal inlay hook thing that the lock attaches to, the key, and the heavy zippers. Also, do you really want to risk getting ink stains and floor spots on a bag that costs upwards of 1500USD? I mean in the end, its your choice but after having done so myself, toting around a bag that expensive, mine was 1800USD plus tax, seems kind of tacky in retrospect. I mean after all its class, not a club. Then again my experience with all of this was when I was at a private school in rural Vermont, now that I'm transferring to Columbia which is in nyc, it doesn't seem as pointless anymore to have a flashy bag haha so I guess environment has to do with it too. Anyway, good luck with your choice!

Ok, I have to chime in here, too. I say wear whatever the hell you wanna wear. Whatever works for you, use it. Chances are the majority of the other people in class aren't going to notice you, much less your bag. I went to a huge school, where in some classes there were 300 other people in the same room as me. My main worry was finding a seat with adequate a/c where I could hear the professor, not what everyone else was wearing and what they thought of me. My smaller classes....well, same issue :smile1:

I don't quite get the mentality that you should look down on the girls who dress either up OR down. Everyone has their own reasons for how they dress and what they like to wear. Me personally, I've run the gamut from pjs to dressy. Finals week in a 9am class? Feh, they're lucky I have pants on and my eyes open. I'm sure there were girls who never left the dorm w/o a face full of makeup. More power to them, I wish I had enough focus in the morning to manage that. However, I also worked all the way through school, so the days when I had to go to work straight from class I had to dress for the office as well. Sure, there were times when I wore a backpack AND a purse...I'd leave the bookbag in the car after class and took just the purse into the office with me. I never even thought that someone would think that was silly. I thought it was practical.

Now, I'm going back to school part-time, taking night classes after work. I was looking for a nicer bag to use so I can take it straight from the office to class, and had to think about function, comfort, quality, AND looks. If you want a flashy bag to show off...go for it!

This thread is funny cos it's such an "american" concern... In Europe, students rarely wear sweatpants or their pyjamas to school... everybody (ok - almost everybody) here likes looking there best when they're going to class... so bringning a high-end handbag is not a concern at all...

I just graduated in May and I carried tote bags all four years that weren't designer (highest end being a Ralph Lauren) and I wouldn't have used an LV or Gucci if I had one. The floors were sometimes dirty, bottles opened, crumbs fell and I would have cried if they had happened to an expensive bag. I carried my keys (with an ID holder) and my cell phone in my totes and left my purse in my apartment, I never felt the need (or had the hands) to carry both.
On the issue of dressing I really went with whatever I felt that day. If I was up studying late, I would just throw on jeans and a sweatshirt for the day. If I had to walk quickly across campus, I wouldn't wear my tall boots and if it was raining, my wellies and black pants. Going out at night was the time to dress up, pull out that designer bag and show off. Maybe I didn't want to take a designer bag because of all the girls (mainly sorority girls-sorry, don't mean to offend anyone) who did had fake Chanel bags or Coach or Vera Bradley and I didn't want to be grouped with them. I think I'm just rambling now and have lost whatever point I was trying to make so just my last thought is that I'm going to law school next month and I'm still not going to carry a designer bag (maybe because my budget doesn't allow one! ha) but seriously I'm going to get a nice looking tote and I got a designer briefcase and I'll probably dress up a bit more everday. Okay, I feel like I'm just rambling now so I'll end this.

I think it's tacky and in poor taste to get so dressed up for class. I go to a very nice school, and most people here are very rich, so we don't need to prove anything to one another. It's funny, though.. Our families are in the top .10% of the nation in terms of wealth, but we all live in polos since we've had since we were 12 and our boyfriends' holey khakis. And perhaps a beat up, leather tote to lug books around in. That's it.

Well I think that if you spend a lot of money on a bag, then show it off. What is the point to spend a lot of money if you are going to leave a bag hanging in your closet? But it is a personal choice. I would show it off.

I go to my local university and even tough I don't care what people wear, I do enjoy getting up early matching up my outfit and I always wear designer bags, and shoes beacuse that is all I have....I also enjoy getting dolled up, wearing my makeup and doing my hair....I am in school all day, I might as well look good..an I guess it works, I took 3 class over the express summer an earned 2 A's an one B......I love school...I dress how i do for myself, don't care what people think....:queen::queen: and I won't change for anyone.....people are going to talk to matter what, so lets give them a reason......

I think you should go to class the way you would normally go out. I mean I always wear heels and nice pants and a nice top with a designer bag because I like to get dressed nice. It makes me actually feel like doing whatever it is, like going to class. I feel like doing things when I feel put together. There's plenty of times though where I want to dress down a bit.

I think we should all work on our "Are you seriously bugging me about my bag" face for the upcoming semesters. Because seriously... different strokes for different folks. Life would be pretty boring if we all put our money into the same things as one another and if we all rolled out of bed smelly going to class. Although I wish I could get myself to do that, sure would cut out a couple of hours from my morning regime.

What clothes I wear, and what bags I wear, I think of the same way--I go through my clothes sorta like grechensclosets' bag-a-day challenge, since if you buy it and you love it, why not use it? Clothes aren't there to collect dust in the closet, and bags are the same way! If I can wear nice clothes to class when I feel like it, then I can use my nice purse when I feel like it too. I've done it, and I still do it sporadically.

Your things are yours for you to enjoy or utilize however you want, they don't belong to anyone else, don't sweat it! :}

I agree with the others who have said that it's your own business and nobody else's..However, this girl in my bio lab used to bring her chloe to class everyday and I'm like "Come on, girl, you know that you would have a fit if hydrochloric acid got on that bag, cause' I would !!!"
