Would you bring a high end bag to college classes?

i go to school right now and i would only bring a large functional tote to school. a gucci tote or a LV tote but not a purse. whats the point, i just need something to carry around my books and laptop in, but i wouldn't carry a cheap bag though for some reason...

Just carry them to wherever you want to carry! I do carry them to school because i tend to have large bags so they can fit into my stuff. When you buy a designer bag, you are supposed to be happy and bring them wherever you want them to be seen so just go with your mood.

I wouldn't/didn't. For all the walking and books I had to carry, I just carried a backpack and a wristlet(tucked in the backpack). Plus, you would have had to put your purse on the floor, which has always been a "no-no" for me.

i never care for my bags, so they are very likely to get dirty and damaged. so thats why i only carry no name bags to college. when they are becoming too used, i just get rid of them and buy a new one. if that happens to my designer handbag, it would be heartbreaking for me and my invested money.

I always try to look nice for class, mainly because I can't pull off that pajama thing....but I don't think I've ever seen anybody at my school wearing pajamas anyway. I'm going to hopefully be starting a full time job this summer while finishing off my final two classes. They're going to let me go to class and then come back to work, so I'll be dressed up every day. I always carry my designer bags with me when I get dressed up, so therefore I will always bring one to class with me. Like I said, I only have two classes so it's not like the bag is going to get beat up. I say just wear what makes you happy! That's what I do!

I do depending on the class. If it is not a science course then yes I carry one if that is what I am in the mood to carry. Science courses that have labs...nope...too worried something will get on it.

I wouldn't really care to be honest. It's all about what YOU feel comfortable with. I mean, when I was in college, I was backpacking it most of the time as the campus was large. But, hey, it's really about YOU and what YOU feel good in. That's my belief. Who cares really what others think, if you feel good in it then that's all that matters.

I totally disagree with this. Why would you laugh at somebody just because they took the time to look put together? I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Just because other people prefer to look like slobs in class, doesn't mean that those who try to look decent and put together should be made fun of. I say, wear whatever you feel like wearing to school! If you are proud of your bag, then go for it! Personally, I do not carry my LV to school just because I don't want to abuse it and I want it to stay nice. Express yourself however you feel and don't worry about what other people think.

ITA. Just because people don't care how they look and the majority are slobs doesn't mean that the standard has to be the lowered to slobbery. I think that everyone should take the time to look presentable and the slobs are NOT appropriate anywhere. And school is no exception. If everyone starts pooping in class, should we all do that too 'cause it's suddently a thing to do? Go to the bathroom, for crissakes.

Back when I was in college, it always bugged me to see girls carrying a bag and backpack, regardless of whether the bag was high-end.

It just seemed superfluous and inefficient. The purpose of the backpack is to keep your hands free! Ha.

I bought the biggest Jansport I could find and still had to carry a purse. I live 1.5 hours away from my College (well, I just graduated, so when I went to college) and I commuted. I had to take everything I might possibly need for note taking (laptop) and studying between classes. My purse stuff couldn't fit in my backpack also with the laptop, iPod, books, folders, pens, pencils, mini stapler, highlighters, various cords & laptop accessories, post-its, thumb drive, etc.

I tried throwing my wallet, cell & keys in my backpack too, but it was frustrating. If I stopped at the coffee shop between classes, I had to swing that honkin, heavy backpack around to get to my wallet. If I just carried a handbag, it was right there and easy to get to. Also, I'm an older student, married, with 4 kids. When I got home, I wasn't lugging that backpack everywhere, I needed a purse for going to kids sports games, grocery shopping, etc.

In addition, sometimes I would run errands between classes. Again, not lugging the backpack into Target. Having a purse made things much easier.

I guess I don't get why whether or not I carry just a backpack or a backpack & purse would actually bug someone. It's not like you are being made to do it. And the comments from people finding it silly or laughing about it - I don't get that either. we all have different life situations and so we do things differently. Just because someone does something differently doesn't make it ok to make fun of them. That just seems petty and immature to me, IMNSHO. There are much bigger things in the world to be concerned over than whether another person carries a purse and a backpack or whether they come to school dressed decently instead of in sweats (I wore sweats once, other wise I dressed like a normal person and wore cute shoes including heels because I like them).

Okay, after reading the many posts on this...I feel the need to chime in. I know I'm setting myself up for many comments, but here I go:

First, for Ms. Sooky (and others)- i'm right there with you! As a college professor / counselor, I should be able to carry a designer bag - I have the income and hopefully, the status to do so. While in college - no purse for me, just a small wallet for id/cash. I carried the same basic blue Jansport backpack for 10 years (i still have the darn thing!).

I have taught many courses where the students come in any way they please (pj's to designer outfits). Many students have bags that I envy, and that's completely fine. I frequently comment to students about how I love their bag and we often talk about our love of handbags and what our "next purchase" would be.

(Insert Giant Exhale here): What I DO have a problem with is students who carry high-end designer bags, drive expensive new cars, then complain / whine that they have to work sooo many hours just to get through school, and the all too frequent: "oh, can I have an extension on my paper since I have to work so much?" or "I can't afford school, and need more aid / loan / scholarship"

When I ask students why they have to work so many hours (genuine interest to help on my part), I get a vareity of replies. Students that need to pay tuition, books, etc, have a true hardship, I can understand. While I can't always provide the extension asked for, I will try to offer alternatives (scholarships, write letters of rec for them, etc), to help ease their financial situation. I've helped students find on-campus jobs that pay better, refered to scholarships, intern programs, and the like. However, More often than not, the answer I get is not about funding tuition/books, but about paying their car payment and credit card bills. Honestly, it makes me want to scream: WELL STOP SPENDING THAT MUCH MONEY ON DESIGNER BAGS! Drive a clunker! Eat Ramen!
"It may have not been that particular occasion that made her advisor take note, but she was pretty upfront about telling people that she did buy designer stuff, bought bags to school and so on, and that that was what she did with her money.
- I wouldn't fund her either! Same comment - get your priorities in order. If you need money for books, tuition, transportation, housing, other school related items, I'm the first one to advocate for you and find ways to help. If you're spending it on clothes, cars, handbags, etc....sorry. no sympathy here.

Agreed, college/university settings bring a diverse group of people together and no one person has the right to judge others (myself included), but it seems like the priorities have changed for many students these days and the importance is more about them becoming a "status symbol" with their wears, rather than taking an intellectual journey to lead them to a rich future.

I went to a university where people cared more about fashion than grades so it was very common to see FAKE chanel, chloe, balenciaga, LV etc.

Nevertheless I brought a backpack to school and a handbag (as my schol was a commuter school and thus i would usually have to go downtown for work or auditions so i needed a handbag too). I usually brought Coach bags, but sometimes balenciaga first or coach paddington and i did not look out of place at all.

Regarding the above post, I totally agree for sure. Personally, I never needed to take out a loan because I lived at home and always paid tuition in full BEFORE the school year started. I also got to drive my parents' car when I needed to but always took the bus and subway. So Iw as a fortunate one for sure. But I fully agree with the above post because I saw that a lot at my school.

i didn't. it only causes jealousy. i once carried a black monogram gucci and people literally stared. i felt kinda weird, lol.

i would't carry anything with monogram but i think it's okay to bring a 'neutral' leather bag, like the LV epi passy.

I carry my "bookbag" which is a Large LV damier tote, other than that i dont bc i usually have a ton of books, if im not carryig books sometimes ill wear a nice bag

Carry whatever you're comforable with. If you want to carry designer bags and don't want too much attention, then I suggest getting something low maintenance, anything from the mono or damier line.
