Women who do not carry purses

I just read a couple of articles on the web about women who don't carry purses. One of them was even based on a segment done on the View. What inspired my search was a comment made to me on how I could stand to carry a purse around all day, I couldn't posdibly need everything in there. I do admit to carrying big bags, I am a tall person, and they look better on me.

I don't think that's very fair or nice. I do not make comments about women who don't carry purses. Some women do feel comfortable leaving the house with a credit card and a chapstick in their pocket, but I am not one of them. My life in particular when I go off to work, I leave my home in the mountains and go traveling all over the place seeing my patients. Due to unpredictable weather, patient emergent issues that may arise, and personal plans that may chage, frankly, I am never quite sure when I will be able to get home. If I need meds, tampons, a different method of paying for something, want to freshen up or even completely reapply my make up for a night out, I want to be able to do it. Also stuff comes up...I break a nail, get food in my teeth, hands get dry, eyes get itchy and irritated from allergies or smoke......everything I carry with me is a tried and true need that occurs on a regular basis. Also, what about you guys with kids? How could you function without a bag? Not only do you need stuff, but your little ones do too.

Finally.....I *love* carrying a bag and showing it off. It's part of my outfit and I am so happy and proud of my bags, I love carrying them. If some women see carrying a bag as a burden ( I even read a women describe handbags as being designed by men to oppress women!), that is their opinion and they are entitled to it, but I don't think I deserve to be made fun of for excercising my choice either. :cursing:
I'm sorry someone was was so rude to you. I guess their Mom never taught them manners.

A historical note re. the comment that handbags were designed by men to oppress women: "handbags" used to be carried EXCLUSIVELY by men. A woman then had to ASK the man for anything she wanted out of the bag (like money!). When women started carrying their own bags, it was a sign of independence.

Kind of funny that we now live in a time of "Honey, can you carry this in your purse for me?" ... But I digress!

Do what makes you happy. I love my handbags, and can't really understand how a woman can have everything she needs (and not have bulky pocket) without carrying one. But whatever works for you, y'know?
My husband does this to me too.:smile1:

there are some days when I go out and wont need a thing in my bag but I still LOVE to carry it its an accessory and I feel sometimes it completes an outfit. I also like knowing that when a nail gets chipped, I get a splinter, I have a wardrobe malfunction I know I have something in my bag to help. I have a wristlet that holds a nail file, nail clipper, tweezers bandaids, tiny bottle of super glue, and safety pin. Then I have my makeup bag with basics to freshen up and I also put my little pill case in it for my tylenol. I then have another pouch with lotion, hair clip, and hair spritz (very dry curly hair that gets extremely frizzy). A wristlet with pens and pencils and a little note pads. My wallet must go every where I never carry cash I tent to loose it lol. I live in FL shades are a must and go everywhere along with my cell. Now it is nice to have something that is adorable and can carry that and more because some days I will need different things. So to the ones who just carry their life in their back pocket cant be too prepared for lifes little mishaps and can only blame themself ;)
After reading your post I have decided I need to get more organized. You also gave me some great ideas on what to carry in my handbag. =)

My bag, belt, and boots/shoes are the best part of my outfit! I always wear Levi's and a white or black T-shirt; length of sleeve and weight of the T shirt depends on the weather! I've been known to carry TWO purses at a time, LOL. I will carry my black leather Lucky whipstitch hobo with another smaller leather bag, if necessary. It depends on what I'm in the mood to carry.

I did go through a very short phase in life of not carrying a purse at all. After becoming sober through a 12 step program in 1993 (there, I broke my anonymity) I decided I did not need one, --isn't a purse just for a flask of vodka and some make up--LOL? I was stripping myself of worldly things to find the REAL ME. I did find out that the real me not only NEEDS a purse but wants and loves purses too! Still sober 19+ years.
Congratulations on your sobriety. :woohoo::woohoo::woohoo:

I have enjoyed reading this post and I want to share something with you all. When I went into the city the other day (which is a treat for me because I don't go to the city often). I took my purse but took all my cash, cards and phone and put them in my front pockets, because I knew I'd be walking around outside a lot. At this time of year I was more worried about getting my purse taken to get at the cash and cards then anything else. I guess my point is do what works for you and some times you may need to adjust what your doing to fit your needs on a certain day and time.

I have loved purses since i was a little kid so I have always carried a purse. Mostly I carried medium to big bags which were generally heavy. Now that I am older and broken down I have tried so hard to downsize. I take everything out of my bag and question its value. What takes up room now in my "old age" is an inhaler and medication. I keep a 3 day supply of pills on me and that is my mantra, I can live out of my purse for 3 days. Like someone else said, the minute I leave something at home I need it. My bow to downsizing is now I cary a small Longchamp tote. I also now carry my nook with me daily but it has to go into its own tote. If someone snatches my bag they are not getting my baby I hope since that tote bag is a cross body.

You go girl!

I love bags and couldn't imagine not carrying one. Over the years I've downsized to smaller, lighter bags and try to keep the contents as streamlined as possible. I no longer carry heavy bags.

I don't have a problem with anyone not carrying a bag.

To each their own, but I definitely can't go without a purse. I use public transportation regularly so I have to carry a lot with me aside from my keys and wallet -- a planner, bottle of water, granola bar, mini umbrella if it might rain, portable lint-remover sheets, stain remover pen, tissues, eye drops, Band-Aids, Tylenol, dental floss, nail clipper, compact mirror, mini comb, Travalo, moisturizer, concealer, blotting sheets, lip balm, hand lotion, and hand sanitizer. Everything is mini/travel-sized so they all fit nicely into a small cosmetic bag without adding much weight. I used to carry more "just in case" stuff, but I narrowed it down to these must-haves that actually come in handy for me on a daily basis.

I remember years ago when I was married, I always carred around a large tote. My husband one day was teasing me about how huge it was, and I thought about it and said, "Ok, I guess I could try to scale down." .

So the next time we ventured out, I carried my credit cards, drivers liscence and lip balm in a little wristlet. The whole time we were out, my husband kept asking stuff like, "Do you have water?" "Do you have tylenol?" Do you have cookies?" "Where is that map?" "Do you have so and so's address?" I had to keep saying, over and over again, "Ummm no....they are back at home in my purse." He vowed from then on never to tease me about my purse again!

My friend never carries a purse, then complains that she has no where to put her lip gloss, cell phone, etc....

I've always loved purses and would play with my mom's as a girl. I'd give up a lot before giving up carrying handbags! It's part of my identity.

I love my handbags, but even if I didn't I need a certain amount of "stuff" on hand to feel prepared. Maybe that comes from having lived for several years in a place where I had a long commute and had to take public transportation. When you are leaving the house in the morning and know you will not be able to just pop home easily later if you need something, or keep the "just in case" stuff in your car, then you tend to carry things you might need on you when you leave in the morning because you never know. Having been surprised more than a few times by unexpected commuting issues due to weather, traffic or other unexpected events, I learned the "just in case stuff" could be important. Also, I had my purse stolen a couple of times in my 20s and it is VERY disconcerting suddenly being without all your "stuff". Sometimes you don't realize how much you miss those things until they are gone. I suppose it's a bit of a security blanket. But what the heck, it's not hurting anyone.

my name as a kid was squirrel. I used to sneak my moms purses out side and fill them full of acorns untill they looked like they had something in it. I got spanked countless times for using her "good bags". I guess I never learned cause I still like to play with purses lol the worst one was her Hermes Kelly she saved up for. I broke the zipper I thought I was a dead kid I was about 6 maybe 7 but she had it fixed and got me a few cheap bags and I never touched hers again. I still at 29 feel SOOOOOOO bad
