Women who do not carry purses

As much as I believe that what other people do isn't really my business, I simply do not 'get' women who do not carry purses.

Some people are just different and that is ok with me.

Something I have noticed is women who don't carry purses typically are don't wear make up or wear particularly nice or elaborate clothing and overall are not concerned about their appearance so I guess they have no real need for a purse?

I'm not sure I understand the connection between wearing makeup and nice clothes and having to carry a lot of stuff with you.

I often run out with just a wristlet, it doesn't mean I don't care about my appearance. I put on makeup before I leave home, so I don't need to carry an entire makeup kit with me.

I can't imagine misplacing my purse! If you find my purse and not me, something is very wrong!

There was an episode of NYPD Blue years ago where a woman was missing and her purse had turned up somewhere and Sipawitz says "She's dead. A woman NEVER forgets her purse! I've seen woman falling off of barstools who forget their own kid's names but they remember their purse! You find a woman's purse like that, you know she's dead."

I totally agree with you!:smile1:

The only time I go out without a bag is to go for a walk. I used to try to use a mini bag for travel but now find with needing to carry reading glasses, sunglasses, cell phone, etc., I carry a normal sized bag for travel same as everyday.
Interesting - I've heard somewhere that Anna Wintour doesn't carry a handbag. I'm surprised that someone whose life is fashion does this.

Just an observation that I've made.

Yeah I don't get it either...

One of my friends has always hated carrying a purse. Her mother used to make her, and when she finally acquiesced to carrying one on a regular basis (in college or after, can't remember) we would joke about her being a "big girl" now. :p This friend also was always perfectly made up, hair styled, dressed nicely, but just hated carrying purses. I don't get it, but to each their own.

I can't find the article now to check her name but I read that there was an editor of Vogue magazine in the 40's who advocated putting large pockets in women's fashions to get rid of the need for a purse - the idea never took off because women love their handbags too much!

I see women in my office with little bags (Coach wristlet or swingpack, pouches with straps like LV Eva, etc.) and wish I could do it - then I started noticing these women all had 20-pound backpacks under their desks and only took the little bags to lunch!

I frequently carry a large clutch or wristlet even during the day. If I have a larger purse its usually mostly empty. I carry my wallet, phone, keys and a lipstick.
Carine Roitfeld has talked about not liking purses and you can't say she isn't into fashion!

Oh I do not think we can stereotype like this AT ALL. Fashion is at the heart of my daily life ever since I was a kid because my mom also worked in the field, I wear make-up as I have my mood...and so do I do with handbags. Especially in the evening, when I just feel like dancing, or when I am just going over to the market to buy some fresh pomegranate, I refuse to carry anthing unnccessary. It gives a feeling of feedom. But this means I have to put the money somewhere, of course.

Did you know that the handbag was actually seen as an invention to make women independent? So that they didnt rely on man carrying money, cigarettes, a lighter?
It is funny how in this context, as soon as we still have the neccessary items with us, we can feel free and light without anything under arm.

I didn't get married until I was nearly 40 and one of the little things I appreciate is that I can give a couple of small items to my husband to carry in his suit pocket so I don't have to take a purse to church or parties!

I hated having to watch over a purse when I was single - my main fear was that my bag would be stolen and I wouldn't be able to get into my home, since I had no one I trusted enough to give a spare key to.
