It’s my understanding that H puts some sort of fabric stiffener (spray starch?) on their silks to make them this way on purpose. The H scarfies prefer it and there have even been some heated debates over in the scarf care thread about it, with links to how owners can wash at home and get that stiffness back. (Dry cleaners use a similar product, so the argument is over wash versus dry clean.) I, for one, am on the fence.UO… H standard silk scarves feel and look cheap. They feel like rough bed sheets. They do not drape well. They make a synthetic sound when you are handling them… like the sound of opening up curtains quickly.
Not talking about their cashmere blends or muslin (they are great)….just their basic silk scarves.
PS. An opinion, unpopular or not - people who are easily offended and get defensive when they read UOs …. Should really avoid reading the UO thread
A related unpopular opinion is that owners can get rid of this stiffness by simply cold washing their silks in the sink with Woolite/Dreft, rolling in a towel to remove as much water as possible, hanging to dry and ironing on the silk setting; this gives silks that lightness you describe. (Ducks for cover from all the scarfies who disagree!)
