What's with the "I hate MK" bandwagon?

If you read my original post, you would see that I admitted that designers are inspired by each other all the time. There's a difference between everyone having a simple shape such as the bucket bag and MK copying a signature LV print such as Damier Azur. No need to take offense and tell me to "GTHOH" as you put it. I'm trying to draw a line between inspiration and blatantly ripping off every single popular style that other designers have released. I know this is a gray area, but you are not taking my point for what it is. MG has created its own aesthetic and vision for the brand. Look at all of the other styles that have been released from MG. They are not mistaken for LV. MK, however, are near carbon copies in both shape and print. You can argue that there is a place in the world for bags such as MK, but you cannot deny that MK tries to create "inspired by" bags of premier designers. One has to wonder if he does this to make the unattainable accessible to the average consumer, or if he does this simply to make a profit.

Thanks for the healthy discussion!

Girl! I apologize if my reply sounds very rude. My GTHOH was meant to be like a friendly-soft punch on the shoulder.

But that's exactly the point of MMK (not the high-end Michael Kors collection), that this brand provides affordable handbags for those who are not willing to spend >1000€ on a single bag. Michael Kors (the person) does not design this lower-priced line.

Regarding MG bucket bags, when I see them, I immediately have LV bucket bags in mind, especially the epi leather ones.

Perhaps a bit of both, but to beat this point to death lol.. many are totally unaware that a premier(or contemporary) counterpart exists, i know even myself i am still learning who came first(gosh, that chicken & egg thing again.. :amuse:)

Also some like the esthetic of a bag but are unwilling to pay the price, so he taps in on that market too. Personally, i get tired of it all, probably why i am just happier in my non-designer... handmade, classically designed bags..

Thanks for the apology! I suppose I read into your reply too literally! I get your association with the MG bucket bag, but I feel like they made it their own with the contrast color linings. MMK should have MK himself involved. Why let something with your name be handled by someone else entirely? The brand is still a reflection of him (an iconic designer). I would have more respect for the brand if bags started being made in the US again and innovative designs were being produced in order to pave the way for a new MMK.

These are all excellent points! I understand why there is a need for such a brand. Unfortunately, I am probably not the consumer that MMK tries to target. Outside of TPF bubble, nobody really cares who made the first bucket bag or came out with what first. This is OT, but I had a lady the other day tell me that I shouldn't buy LV because it is just coated plastic. I didn't have the heart to tell her that I already knew that because she seemed so excited to share that revelation with me. :confused1:

I don't "hate" MK, but their bags have never appealed to me because, as others have pointed out: a) IMO, they do not look and feel like quality bags, b) many of their bags have that GIANT "MK" emblem, which I don't care for, b) the market is over-saturated with them, and d) so many of their styles are too "inspired by" (or blatant knock offs of) other brands. While I realize that none of these reasons is exclusive to MK, I don't think I'll ever own one for these reasons. But people love them and have had good experiences with them, so to each their own.

What a silly comment, it's coated canvas.. and while i don't own any LV right now, i still love speedies... your right though, most in the 'real world' don't care nor even give a second thought to who made what first, they go and look and buy what suits their tastes and budgets.

Not debating, i swear but neither of my MK bags have screaming emblems nor are of poor materials, i think like most brands certain styles just stay in people's focus... like Coach only making fabric 'C' bags and when someone shows them something else their like..whaat Coach makes that?

I think what has led me to not purchase any MK shoes or handbags (I do have a few MK clothing items that are cute and I like that style) is that I don't really like that circle MK logo. There was a pair of MK flats that were super comfy, but there was that darn gold circle MK right on the front! I also liked this one MK evening-ish shoulder bag that was cute, and luckily it had that detachable MK logo key chain clip, but I just felt that the price point was still a little high. I feel the same way about Tory Burch, I don't like that logo either for some reason and hence I can't get myself to buy any of those flats. I hate to say I'm on the "hate" bandwagon but it's not that I hate the items, just the logo? I hope that makes sense. Like other brands have logos that I like better, such as the Coach "coach wagon" and that legacy hang tag or the Dooney duck.

Never bought a MK bag , nor shoes, have couple men's cotton shirts and they are pretty good quality. Nothing special, just regular shirts. Needless to say I bought them at steinmart 90% off. Although , I bought one bag ( sutton satchel) for my niece, she loves it, it is sturdy and looks just like Prada... I myself would never wear it. Kids don't care.

I don't disagree, sometime that medallion is overwhelming and ruins it... i do see a trend on the newer styles of it being toned back... i swear some of those things could be weapons!

At least it can be taken off most styles, I think.

I'll be glad if there is a trend of people taking those off (and apparently it's a keychain? So they can maybe put it on their keys instead, and if they really want someone to notice that they have MK stuff they can be sure to pull out their keys around them, lol). Because the bags are often in good colors of leather, in simple shapes derived from other bags that were popular for good reason, I think it will look quite nice seeing people carry them around without those on.

If I do get one for work, I will not be using the dongle/keychain/whatever, that will come straight off. I do love to see bags with creative, interesting dongles though (not the brand's name but cute or artsy stuff, and the occasional tassel).

I know quite a few do, as they swing about and do add weight to the bags overall. I love the color range of MK bags even though i only own Peanut(shade of brown) and black neither of my styles have any dangling anything...

I can certainly see that. Just like its common for people think monogram (or at the very least, coated canvas) when the subject comes up when they have a lot more to offer.

Haha. I didn't know how to explain the coated canvas thing, so I just nodded my head in astonishment. :wtf: It's interesting how shoppers make their purse buying decisions. I actually complimented a coworker on a MMK (thanks to @dangerouscurves for providing the often forgotten distinction between MK & MMK) bag recently, and she told me that she doesn't like MMK bags but relatives continue to buy them as gifts for her. I found that fascinating because she never expressed disdain for the brand before. She knows that I'm not a fan, so I feel like she said that to jump on the bandwagon. I guess my point is that everyone will have different feelings about the brand, but nobody should let my posts or anyone else's taint their love for the brand.
