Great thread! I was just thinking of this today. I am almost always a 'big bag girl' - I like to carry the world around with me :D and normally tote the following around
Notebook and pens
Purse
2 phones (work and personal)
Make-up bag
Make-up clutch - this contains a few fabric swatches and photos
Moleskin folder
Glasses
Sunglasses
Umbrella
Hat (I hate when my hair gets frizzy)
Small bag pumpkin seeds
Nak'd cocoa mint bar
Small bag raisins
Tissues
Key holder
Travelcard
Anyway - the past couple of days, my back has been so painful. I swapped to a smaller bag today, carried only one phone, my hat, glasses, travelcard, make-up bag and my debit card. Backache was definitely less severe and I didn't miss everything I usually carry.

Does no one carry sunscreen in their purse? Or even SPF 15 moisterizer? Come on, gals, sunscreen is important! I see everyone packs sunglasses, but they're not going to protect your skin from melanoma.

Please, please everyone, get in the habit of using and carrying sunscreen! Your skin will thank you. :sunnies

I do. I carry spf 50+. I have light and very sensitive skin (I'm from northern Europe).

oh yeah, i always fill up whatever size of bag i carry
i used to be a large bag lover, i mean LARGE, i'm 5'4" and 90pound and i used to carry a balenciaga weekender, i start downsizing seriously last year and it feels good, if i do need to bring my macbook air/ipad then i would carry an extra bag but i try to keep carrying small bag for now

my essentials are:
blackberry & iphone
keys
compact powder
i don't bring wallet a lot i just throw my money & cards on the zipper pocket inside the bag
powerbank charger for my phones
cigarettes & lighter

that's it!

Please reconsider your decision not to use sunscreen.

No!

I'll use it if I need it, otherwise not. You need to look into vitamin D deficiency, on the other hand - if you haven't already. Vitamin D deficiency is very bad for you. It's not just the cause of rickets and osteomalacia, but is a contributing factor to any kind of immune problems. Yes, that includes allergies and cancer.

I guess you hadn't heard, most sunscreens are carcinogenic?

Where I live, I can't get a sunburn except a few months of the year unless I'm on a mountaintop. And even in the summer I can't get a sunburn unless I'm out in the middle of the day. And what sunshine there is apart from that is pretty anemic. What little I get, I need to stay healthy. In fact, I need more than I get.

:useless: Photos would make this thread so much more enticing! I always love to see what others carry and how they organize their handbag. I'll post a few of my own soon!

OMG, that little frowny face holding the protest sign is adorable! Pictures aside, people need to incorporate more emoticons! (Has anyone seen the "feminist" protest cheer icon??? LOL)

I think the most noteworthy item someone considered "essential" was the box of waterproof matches. Very interesting.

If I am going to work I carry a medium to large size bag with wallet, zippy coin purse for coins and train pass, keys, ipod, phone, makeup bag for touchups, my epi pen, sunglasses. but I also carry a canvas tote with my shoes for the day if I am wearing snow boots or flats on the commute depends on weather/time of year, a large makeup bag with tissues, nail file, tide to go, advil, all that kind of stuff.

I have been wanting to pair down my stuff because I'm having a baby in september, so I know that I will be having a baby bag full of stuff that I will be able to put in the stroller basket most of the time, but i want to have easy access to my essentials, so I am looking at cross body clutches and cute little bags to carry hands free.

So, I am going to need smaller leather goods. Like a slim card holder for essential cards, a slim coin purse for money and maybe a little something to hold my lippy touch up and powder.

you can easily take vit d supplements...they work. you only need like 5 mins exposure to the sun to get what you need in a day. so...you can wear sunscreen the rest of the time

It really depends where I am and what I'm doing...usually a book to read on commute, handcream, lip balm, lip tint (happily doubles as blush :) ), a cardigan, wallet, coin purse, ipod, cell phone...love my andriod, snacks, small tube of rollon perfume for long days, comb....tht's all I can think of...and sometimes my dslr and its accessories :P tht's when most bags start threatening to break my shoulder...

For school : laptop, chargers, lab manuals, pencil case, goggles and labcoat are added

Ok, I think I responded earlier but didn't include what all I carry. Oops!

- pen
- keys
- cell phone
- lipgloss
- face powder
- a few hair ties and bobby pins
- mirror
- flushable wipes
- eye drops
- wallet
- a few tampons and a pantiliner
- leatherman (useful but heavy! even though I have the skeletool version)
- hand lotion
- lighter
- chewing gum
- sunglasses and sunglass case
- digital camera in sleeve
- medication (usually a few Aleve and Benadryl pills)

Things I sometimes carry in addition to the other stuff:

- Kindle touch
- umbrella
- water bottle
- cardigan/shawl/scarf

As you can imagine, it doesn't seem like much but the weight quickly adds up. I am trying to go with "just the essentials" but on the days I don't take something on the list, I inevitably regret it. So it seems these things ARE my essentials. I used to carry a LOT more of personal items (deodorant, hairbrush, more makeup items, perfume, etc) but have learned to get up earlier so I am not perpetually running late. Its helped save my back from some back pain!

I take supplements. Yes, they work. No, I can't get what I need in 5 mins where I live, and most of the time it's too cold to be outside in a bikini. And no, I don't need sunscreen unless I plan to be outside in the middle of the day for more than 15 minutes.

If you live in a place where your shadow is shorter than you most of the day and you've got fair skin and will be outside for more than 15 minutes during that time and you don't wear a hat and long sleeves, yes, I can see where sunscreen would be important. But I don't, and I'd say for those living as far north as I do, don't put on sunscreen by default, because you will only need it some days.

Added: Clouds will cut down on the rays, so at least at my latitude, that ups the time you can be outside without sunscreen. Oh, and although supplements are a life saver, we don't know everything about the effects of the sun, and there might be something in the sunshine that makes you healthier.

I'm carrying the same bag in my avatar right this very moment. And as you can see, I usually carry a lot but right now, I only have these: wallet, coin purse, IDs, atomizer, BlackBerry and digicam. I even left my umbrella even if it's sporadically raining.

What a relief! LOL

I agree with having photos too will make this thread much more interesting! I share a photo of my Chanel Coco Ming Tote as painted by Miss Lecroc! :smile1:
