I carry very little around these days:

Alice Park billfold
iPhone
cosmetic bag with tiny pots of lip balm, cheek stain, and concealer

(sometimes I'll carry a lip color; maybe a bobby pin if it's hot out; and occasionally a small mirror)

I could get by solely on clutches these days.

Wallet
change purse
sunglasses
reading glasses
mints
Moment (headache pills)
tissues
cosmetic pouch (eye pencil, gloss, lipstick, concealer, mirror, Qtips)
comb
umbrella
disposable toilet seat covers (not that I ever actually get near them either!!)
keys
cell phone
pen and notebook
gloves (two pairs)
pepper spray (you never know)
hand sanitizer
tampax, panty liners
shopping bag
spare hair clip

lately ive been into slightly smaller bags.
what this means is ive head to drastically par down what i carry. ive noticed a lot of items: agenda, hairbrush, extra meds, ereader... are things that are "nice to have" with me but i dont NEED every single day or every time i leave the house.

i really only need my compact wallet, keys, phone, migraine meds, a lipgloss and a small mirror.

does anyone else find they carry a lot of stuff in their larger bags that theydont really need to have all the time?

Oh dear! I need everything I carry in my bag every day!
My wallet, of course, my eye glasses, my make up , a small agenda, my phone, a pack of Kleenex, chewing gum and sweets, a scarf, a small bottle of mineral water....and a bottle of aspirin...

I hate a heavy bag, really weighs me down and feels uncomfortable. All I usually carry is: zippy wallet, cell phone, eyeglass case, keys, lipgloss, pen, Altoids, small hand sanitizer, a band-aid, and a small bottle of Tylenol. I can change out my bags in less than a minute.

Yes! I'm downsizing, too! I used to be a "VERY LARGE BAG" kind of girl, but now I'm really paring down what I bring out. It makes life a lot easier. I used to carry my bills, stamps, comb, a million random papers, makeup, etc....but you're right; the essentials are a compact wallet, keys, phone...and not too much else!

I always think about cleaning my bag out, but I never actually do. I keep telling myself that as soon as I clean out all of that extra crap, I'll actually need it, so it all stays.

I always carry with me my wallet, keys, phone, iPod, hairbrush, mirror, makeup bag, lotion, hand sanitizer, contact solution, sunglass case, waterproof matches, a very small notebook, a pen and pencil, allergy pills, Tylenol, band-aids, gum, and a pack of cookies.

It's easier to use a small bag if you go everywhere by car as you can leave your sweater and bottle of water etc in the boot/trunk. It's also easier if you have your own office as you can keep a few things there too. I have to share an office that has flat-top tables as desks (so modern - so rubbish) and I go everywhere by public transport. I need an umbrella, keys for everything, work for the day, extra sweater, fan and sunglasses (I suffer from migraines from the tube lights) etc, if I am popping to a restaurant and straight back of course I just take a mini bag but usually I'm out, sometimes for 12 hours, so of course I end up feeling like a donkey :D

I always carry so much strange stuff with me that I don't need on a daily basis. It adds so much to the weight of the bag that I've been doing my best to downsize what I carry in my bag. A lot of it is "what if" stuff - what if I am in a hurry and don't have time to put on my makeup? I should carry loads of makeup items with me! That kinda thing.

Heavy bags give me back/shoulder pain, so downsizing what I carry in my bag is for the best. But it's hard!

I actually take all my crap out of my bag each night, and put the bag into it's dustcover. So, my bags never really accumulate much stuff. Maybe the odd receipt or bobby pin, but nothing like I've seen in some ladies bags (half-melted lipsticks, random change, post-it notes.)

I always have my iPhone, sunglasses, gum, makeup bag with essentials, hand sanitizer, a key pouch with transit tokens/keys, and my wallet. Occasionally, I'll have my wall charger and old iPod if I need it. I use very little of the space needed for a big bag unless I'm shopping for small stuff, so the extra space rarely gets used, really.

I carry so many things mainly because I have 2 small kids so they need many things and the easier way is to put them into my bag!! I certainly feel like a "donkey" too like my dear papertiger said previously!! :lolots: Generally, I carry baby wipes, pampers, changing mat, kids clothes, bottles and my umbrella, keys, lipbalm, money not wallet though, sunglasses and many rubbish like gums that I don't use...

I carry just the essentials....wallet, pencil pouch, makeup bag, notebook, coin purse, post-it holder, compact mirror, and cell phone. At one time I would carry a leather photo envelope and sunglasses, but they made the bag very heavy.

I carry a lot of stuff, but it's stuff I might need. And that makes it worth it for me. I'd rather not need it, but have it, than need it, but not have it.

That said, I edit my bag every single morning/or evening, to see what I have put in there that I won't be needing the next day, like reciepts, something I bought, empty bottle and so on. So I don't have clutter in my bag.

EDIT: I also think what you need depends on your lifestyle. I'm a typical girl-on-the-go, leave home at 7 in the morning and often don't return until bedtime, or I have a impulsive sleepover. If I had to get home everyday, because of a family or animals to take care off, I might carry a lot less.

I used to carry way more than I needed, but I've gotten into the habit of cleaning out my bag every week. Receipts, food wrappers, etc. tend to accumulate and take up more space than I imagined they could. I change bags every other week and here's what always makes its way to the next bag.

Cellphone, Mino (HD recorder), wallet, Dior eye designer compact. hand cream, Canon ixus camera in case, small concealer pot.

These all fit perfectly in a small to medium size bag, think 12 L x 9 H X 3-4 D.
