What's inside your bags?!

Not much is in my bag:

Wallet
Cosmetic case (which hold lipstick, aspirin, band aids nail file)
sunglasses
phone
tissues
tic tacs

And then in the bag's interior pocket there is a pen, lipgloss, flash drive, and random card or receipt

It's easier to use a small bag if you go everywhere by car as you can leave your sweater and bottle of water etc in the boot/trunk. It's also easier if you have your own office as you can keep a few things there too. I have to share an office that has flat-top tables as desks (so modern - so rubbish) and I go everywhere by public transport. I need an umbrella, keys for everything, work for the day, extra sweater, fan and sunglasses (I suffer from migraines from the tube lights) etc, if I am popping to a restaurant and straight back of course I just take a mini bag but usually I'm out, sometimes for 12 hours, so of course I end up feeling like a donkey :D

Same here -- every single thing in my huge bag is something I need with me during the day.

Sunglasses
Reading glasses
nail file
lipstick
mirror
pain medications
emergency allergy medication
hand lotion
keys
agenda/notebook
cell phone
pen
wallet
ipod
small book to read
peppermints
phone charger (I often run out of juice in the early evening)
phone headset
earplugs (help keep me from getting migraines)

flashlight -- this is the only non-daily essential that I carry. I've been caught in city-wide power outages late at night and it's been essential to make my way home in the pitch black)

Most of my bags are in the size range of a bv maxi although some are structured and some are not. Here's what i always carry in them:

long wallet
iphone
blackberry
thin pencil case with 3 or 4 pens
cosmetic pouch with a compact, 2 or 3 lippies, blush, brush
full size hairbrush
full size bottle of cologne
a cosmetic case with keys, hand sanitizer, bug spray, tissues, wet wipes, band aids, tide pen
school id for getting into my kids' school
sometimes I'll carry an ipad in it too

if i'm out with my kids, inevitably someone will ask me to keep their ipod/earphone/ps3/nintendo/wallet/book/toy in my bag

geez... no matter my bag weighs a ton!

ps. today i used a rarely used bag... rifling through one of the pockets I found one of my kids' baby tooth. i have no idea how it got there.

I carry a lot, but I also change out my bag every day or two, so at least nothing extra stays in there. I got the idea on a Balenciaga forum to keep my things in pouches, so it's easy to change them out. I keep a pouch with medicine stuff (3 kids): bandaid, Tylenol, Ibuprofen, allergy medicine, tweezers, sanitizer, floss; one with makeup stuff, mostly lipsticks and chapstick; one tiny one for misc (probably don't need it because I can't even remember what's in it. Also wallet, reading glasses, sunglasses, keys, cell phone, coupon holder sometimes, gum.

I only carry what I 'need' - eReader or book, phone, wallet, comb, mirror, hand sanitizer, house keys, office keys, car keys, pen, lipstick, lip balm, eyedrops, mints, sunglasses, temporary stuff (receipts for what I bought that day, letters to mail, etc). I change my bag at the end of the week and the end of the weekend and clear out anything that has accumulated that I don't need.

I take everything out of the bag after I use it.

I use a pochette/wristlet around my waist at the mall - keeping more in the car.

I have a pencil case I use for small trips with sunglasses and a meal bar in the main pocket and in the side pocket:
small jar of lotion
lipgloss
chewing gum
credit card size reading glasses.

I have an organizer with stuff I will often need for longer trips.

I also have assorted other items and pouches I'll put in the car for "just in case".

In addition to this, the wallet (two sizes depending on what I'm doing - and now I've added a card wallet separately from that), the cell phone, possibly an iTouch and maybe other items go into the purse after I've decided on the pencil case or organizer.

And after I got caught without any rain gear recently, I bought a new purse with room for a goretex jacket or umbrella. I'll switch to that purse if there's any chance of rain.

But I think the main strategy for me is to have two sets of stuff I use, and to limit the size of anything that can be limited - lotion, makeup, perfume, reading glasses, not taking a huge sunglasses case.

I used to carry:

a book
a deck of cards
lipstick and mascara
a wallet
a scarf
keys
sunglasses case (glasses on my face!)
dried fruit, nuts, and easy to pack snacks
and a pen

I've been experimenting with going bag-less
I purchased an old LV palm pilot case, which holds my wallet contents, my phone, and a cable which I can use to charge my phone off of my computer.
My phone has an ereader, note app, and several games.
I stopped wearing makeup
Now, if I'm traveling I still pack the whole kit - but for day to day, I drop this case and my keys in my pocket, tie the scarf around my neck and put my sunglasses on my face, and walk out the door.

If it rains, I dance in the rain while singing loudly.
The only thing I really, really, really miss is my pen.

Does no one carry sunscreen in their purse? Or even SPF 15 moisterizer? Come on, gals, sunscreen is important! I see everyone packs sunglasses, but they're not going to protect your skin from melanoma.

Please, please everyone, get in the habit of using and carrying sunscreen! Your skin will thank you. :sunnies

Not.

We don't all live in climates where it's appropriate. I'd have to be very careless to get a sunburn where I live. I actually have to search for moisturizers that don't have SPF in them, because they don't agree with me and I don't need them. I've found one that works for me, and I reserve that one for when I actually need it.

Besides, we need UV-B, which are the rays that burn. That's what produces vitamin D, and is only available in the middle of the day during summer in northern climates. If you don't have access to that (which is most of the year for us), please use supplements in the 2000-5000 IU range. And even if you do have access to sunshine, you'd need to strip out of most of your clothes and preferably expose both sides of your body for 15 minutes or more a few times a week to get enough vitamin D.

^^^ not in my climates either. Andy doctor specifically asked me to try to get some sunshine every day because I have vitamin D deficiency.

OT, I used to carry the kitchen sink! But I don't any more. My job is office based and I keep 4-5 pairs of shoes in the wardrobe at work and a make up selection in the drawers. So I don't carry them in my bags any more. Weekends are a bit different because I will not have access to the stuff I left in the office.

So for weekdays, I carry:
Long wallet
iPhone
Blackberry
Keys
Tissues
Travel pass
Work security pass
Umbrella or sunglasses
Magazines/newspaper (optional)
Scarf/shawl (optional)

Weekends:
Compact wallet
iPhone
Keys
Lipgloss
Compact
Handcream
Tissue
Travel pass
Umbrella/sunglasses
Scarf/shawl (optional)

Gee... Do I carry too much?

Not.

You don't need to get a sunburn for your skin to suffer permanent, even disfiguring damage from UV exposure. In fact northern Europeans' fair skin is far more susceptible than other skin types to UV damage ranging from premature aging, wrinkling and spotting to potentially fatal skin cancers like melanoma. You don't need to get suburnt or tanned for those things to happen either. In fact you don't even need to be out in the sun in order to sustain serious UV skin damage. Cloudy days require as much UV skin protection as sunny days. Your skin can also sustain life-long damage from exposure to reflective light off buildings, concrete, or water, for instance. Making a sun hat and sunglasses a flimsy defense.

Please reconsider your decision not to use sunscreen. There is a reason that sunscreens sold in Europe are many times stronger than those sold in the U.S. I have several friends with "northern European skin" who developed skin cancers in their 40s. Though their cancers have not proven fatal--as of yet, they have been disfiguring, resulting in numerous surgeries to remove tumors from their necks and faces. These are not women who ever suntanned.
