Judith Leiber always comes to mind whenever people asked me of evening bags. Her evening bags mostly clutches with shoulder strap option.
Depending on your taste (leather, exotic, sparkly crystals, etc.), you should be able to find something in your price range, especially if you are open to pre-owned or vintage. Below are samples of mine. Happy hunting!

I regret buying the super mini, had it for 6 weeks now...I wish I would have got the one for $1,290 instead. I wanted the bag to match the belt.

I have both in the dusty rose color. It doesn't hold much and I haven't been to enough dinners or evening outings where I would prefer to use a bag this small to enjoy it.
The super mini looks crazy as a crossbody (because it's so small).

So I like to double cross the chain and make it a hand held size bag. Super cute this way.

The belt is super bomb. I think I'm gonna get it in black too.

There are some unbelievably gorgeous bags on this thread that I’ll probably never own. Lovely pictures too.

What I can recommend is the Mulberry Lily if your a fan of a simple classic design with fabulous leather. I love my lily bags. Look good for day or evening events, carries cross body or over the shoulder, lots of colour options, & fits a reasonable amount inside.

Not at home to photograph it, but I've using my BV Montebello for formal events almost exclusively lately. It's similar to the Chanel WOC, but much less recognizable (). It can easily be used as a crossbody, a shoulder bag, or a clutch. It’s subtly dressy without being fussy. Yay.

Do any of you know if it's acceptable to wear the dior clutch as a cross body or shoulder bag, if attending a formal wedding or event?
