What do H fans think of LV?

If H is a Ferrari, then LV is a BMW. Sometimes, you just want to run a quick errand and/or not attract much attention. In those instances, it's fine to take out the Beamer. But yeah, huge difference between quality, price, and perceived elitism.
Exactly! And as a proud owner of two BMWs and an all-around car freak, cars are "Bimmers" and motorcycles are "Beamers."

And I hope no BMW owner was offended. We actually own a BMW. My main point was that Ferraris are obviously more exclusive (like H) whereas BMW thrives (like LV) on mass sales. I think OP made the remark that LV is everywhere, and similarly I think BMWs have become ubiquitous over the years that it's really not a super luxury car brand anymore.

I think it also partly depends on where you live. When I lived in NY, LV was everywhere, which was largely why I never wanted one (well, secretly kind of wanted one but would never purchase one). But here in Seattle, you don't see a lot of LV and so more and more I've been thinking about getting something. Same with cars - don't see many BMWs around here, so I still consider them a luxury car brand. We do have lots of Audi, Mini, Prius and Subaru cars though.

OK, so this is a totally first-world dilemma ...

I've never been a huge fan of LV because of the prominent logo and ubiquitous nature of some of their bags (literally, you can't walk through Boston on any given day without seeing a Neverfull ... or eight). I can appreciate why some people love them but have never felt the appeal. Part of it is, when LV logo-mania was at its height several years ago, I saw too many women carrying LV bags with a sort of superior attitude (not that most LV lovers are like this, but it's what I saw in the location I lived in at the time and it was a huge turn-off).

However, this is the second autumn in a row that I have felt myself strangely drawn to buying a Speedy B. Fall/winter is coming, and I'm feeling a definite itch for a higher-end bag that zips shut and is weather proof. I'm pretty sure the style will work for me as I have a couple of Longchamp Le Pliage Cuir bags that are essentially the same thing -- a zipped duffle with a cross-body strap. Longchamp is great but it isn't giving me the luxe feeling I'm craving. Basically, I want an easy-to-use, all-weather bag that still feels high-end. In that way, the Speedy B feels like the bag that should fill that void. As much as I love and use my H bags, I know that when it's sleeting in January, I'm going to be looking for a different option,

BUT .... -- and so many of you can probably relate to this -- another part of my brain is screaming, "But it's not H! And for that price, I could put that money toward another H bag -- or buy a new CSGM!"

So, I'm looking for some discussion to help focus my ping-pong-ing brain! :panic: Do you ladies have this bag? (I'm looking specifically at the Speedy B30 in Damier Ebene.) Do you find it goes against the H-fanatic's love of understated, non-logo'd elegance? Or does it simply fill one of those slots in a collection that H doesn't fill (I see my Chanel flaps as fitting in this category).

Would love any and all thoughts. Thanks!
I actually have a couple of LV bags. I bought the NF with the feather design on it this past spring and honestly have used it more than any of my bags this summer. In caring for my MIL I have found it to be the most useful bag. I can through my stuff in and hers as well. I don't worry about it the way that I would one of my H bags.

And the added zipped pouch is super useful for popping out of the house or office.

So true! Don't have to think about scratching it, getting soaked in the rain, ...
Still an affection for the bag because it is beautiful in its own non Hermes way!

I love this thread. We should all buy what we want and stop the jigger jabber in our heads.
That's OK, I like chatty threads. But, seeing you asked ...

I know I started out asking about canvas, but when I tried on the DE, I just couldn't warm up to it. Strangely, inexplicably, I liked the monogram on me more. :confused1: And I do love the look of a well-patina'd speedy, but am still warming up the the mono canvas thing. Still not sure it's right for me, but we'll see.

This speedy, OTOH, I loved right away. I've always liked the feel of Empreinte leather but was again hung up on the monogram. I really like this new version, that still has mono but less of it, and I LOVE the outside pocket. Tried it on last week and again today, and home it came. I'm going to see how this size (the 25) works, and then if I need more room, I'll revisit the canvas options again in a 30.

Thanks to everyone for chiming in -- I always preach the idea of buying what you love and will used regardless of brand -- just needed a reminder of it myself! And keep the comments coming -- I find all of your insights really interesting and helpful!
Love it. I like chatty threads too and this one has been interesting. I enjoy hearing people's perceptions.

Yes, you got it right! I bought the Empreinte, plan to use it all the time, and tried on the mono 30 to consider for later, if I want more room and a canvas option.

I totally agree that if you love a bag and feel good wearing it, it will look good on. I'm at the point where I don't "need" any more bags, so when I do buy, I want to make sure the bag works for me and feels comfy. No more bags that need to be babied or are awkward to carry. Now, I only want to spend on bags that look good and feel effortless.
What is the weight difference between the leather and the canvas? One of the best things for me about the canvas is that it is so lightweight. I sent most all of my larger bags to consignment because they were just too heavy.

There's definitely room for H, LV, and all the other brands, which makes this all so fun! I started with LV, like many others, and have been shifting to H, some Chanel. I still use my LV Neverfulls (I love this bag - own 3), speedy, SC, etc. but have downsized LV significantly to make room for H, which is my new obsession! Feel lucky to have owned & enjoyed all my LVs and now have the ability to add new brands to my collection.

I own a few LV bags too (purchased them b4 I ventured into H)... The bags are very functional and fuss free. I use the bags freely without worry of scratches etc. The canvas bags are lightweight and hardy too. My LV bags have lasted more than 10 years so I am happy. My favourite is the epi leather. I get loads of compliments when I use my red epi leather bag.

I have not been shopping at LV lately but the mini LV trunk recently caught my eye. What do ya all think of the LV mini trunk? :flowers:

Hi megt10 - I find the LV leather to be heavier than the canvas - and it's noticeable. I can definitely tell a difference when I switch from canvas to my taurillon leather bags (Capucines, Sofia Coppola, etc.). I think empreinte leather is not as heavy as the taurillon leather bags.

Your NF is definitely a wonderful bag -- super light with large capacity - glad to hear that you've found it so useful. I would't trade my NFs for anything - it's the one LV bag style I have not downsized to make room for H. If weight is an issue, you may want to stick with LV canvas. Hope this helps! (BTW - you have an amazing H collection!!)

The Empreinte leather is heavier than canvas, but I find my Empreinte 25 pretty light. The joy of the 25 is that it feels small, but fits a surprising amount. Jpezmom is right, the Sofia Coppola is definitely heavier -- I think the leather itself is thicker, plus the SC has a suede lining where the Empreinte bags have cloth lining. The new model Empreinte Speedy also doesn't have feet, which lightens the load from the previous model.

Basically, I think the Empreinte Speedy is pretty light for a leather bag, but I'm still thinking of getting a canvas one for the ultimate lightweight, carefree carrying experience!

Glad you still like and use your Neverfulls! I feel like I went pretty directly from contemporary brands to Bal and Chanel to H, and now I'm sort of circling back to LV, strange as that probably sounds. I don't think I'll end up buying a lot of LV, but I do love the Speedy and can see myself ending up with more than one!
