What bags do you consider to be "stealth wealth"?

Being from New England, and living in an area where there is a lot of old money (North Shore of Boston) I've met some wealthy people in my time. At least around these parts, though, the old money types practice stealth wealth in a different way -- they're cheap! So I see loads of very affluent women who carry Coach or Longchamps or even (shudders) LL Bean totes. There are a lot of women here who look down at ostentatiousness, even if they can afford it. It's definitely an old money thing though -- I see plenty of LVs and lately, Goyards in certain towns, as well.

The old, classic wealth in New York City is the same way. I recently went to a church service in a long-established very well-heeled enclave outside of the city and so many women carried 20 and 30 years plus Ferragamos. These were their good bags, and they weren't even Chanel. There is a high value in buying a sturdy quality ... but not showy ... ONCE and holding on to it forever. Same with women's suits and jackets. Great quality, classic… and which decade?

Hi all!

I just joined PF so I could ask for your opinions. I can't start my own thread yet but this will do.

I own a lot of bags, collected throughout the years. I have lots of Chanel, Gucci, LV and some Balenciaga. As I read through this thread, I seriously want to purge all my collection (except for my Chanel caviar 2.55) and buy a couple of really good bags that doesn't scream label only quality, but still beautiful of course.

For my first bag, I'm eyeing this Delvaux on Etsy. The price might seem higher for Etsy but compared to Barneys prices, this is definitely cheap. I think the color is perfect, not too bright not too dark. And it looks like it's in mint condition.

What do you guys think?

Welcome to TPF, KelseyP!
Delvaux is a very reputable brand. The Belgians are very proud of it.
The bag you are eyeing is stunning. Beautiful colour and leather.
Proportions are good as well. A classic.

Awesome thread and it's interesting reading everyone's answers.

There was an excellent article in The New Yorker about in the summer, I think. I'll try to find it when I'm at my desk. I believe it was written by Allison Gregory.

Oh I like this thread!! I live in Kansas City and am originally from St Joseph (yep, the Pony Express) :) lots of "old money"
Dior is very quiet here - I have seen a few of the "old guard" carrying Lady Dior and much much older Chanel.
Beautiful classy ladies with beautiful bags - small and elegant

This is beautiful! Did you get it?

Stealth = high-price bags from nonluxury designers: Longchamp leather, Coach's fancier stuff etc all go well into the 1-2k range, if not higher.

Custom-made purses and luggage from indie shops on Etsy are super-stealth. You can spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on couture pieces from unrecognizable designers.

Wow! I had never heard of them - absolutely gorgeous!

Do you have one? If so, what has been your experience so far?

Thanks again for sharing :)

I have one moynat, the baladin. Been wanting the rejane (picture that i posted). Have to save up for the rejane. So beautiful but not inexpensive. Quality is at par with Hermes. Been to their store in paris last yr, that's when i picked up the baladin. Saw the rejane there and just fell in love with it. Check out the moynat thread.

I don't know about "stealth wealth"--but, bags can be expensive due to technology of materials, not appearance.

There are plain-looking bags, engineered for purpose, which cost more than popular designer bags.
Because of materials used, remaining lightweight, special inserts, etc.

These are bags for tough use, not for show.
Completely unimpressive, if viewed by others--which is intentional.
