5 handbag styles I would suggest:

a work bag (satchel/tote)
an everyday run of the mill bag
a clutch/wristlet/dressy event bag
a rainy day bag
a classic piece

Top 3 brandname bags that are considered classic (I think this from a book - although I cannot recall which book, probably some sort of wardrobe stylist or closet essentials subjected books):
Hermes birkin (do not have)
Chanel classic flap (own - black lambskin; french blue lambskin; not quite the classic flap but a bordeaux jumbo reissue)
LV speedy (own - mine is a French co. with tab/ lock monogram)
LV Alma (do not have)
Hermes Kelly (do not have)

1) Prada deerskin or calfskin large bag for everyday use (black or dark brown)
2) Chanel caviar shoulder bag with chain straps
3) Chanel WOC 3 way bag that can be used as clutch, sling bag or shoulder bag (black)
4) Chanel vintage jumbo 12" (black)
5) LV keepall 60

definitely depends on the individual's lifestyle. for example, i am a student who will probably work in a corporate environment so here are my five "essential" choices:

1. for school: spacious messenger bag, totes
2. for travel: backpack
3. casual/default purse: crossbody style... extremely convenient!
4. business/business casual: shoulder bag, briefcase
5. something fun: unique texture, pattern, design, etc.

Whichever 5 she likes and can afford.

Every woman's lifestyle and taste is different, so it would be impossible to give a definitive list of 5 types of bags; let alone specific brands and/or styles.

For example, my current list would have 5 clutches on it, as that's all I ever seem to use! :D

One classic for work (BV, chanel, Hermes)
One fun bag for day to day that you can put on the floor (Chloe, Coach, Cole Haan)
One tote carry on for overnight trips (LV Carryall is great)
One clutch for even events
One go everywhere including work, Target, grocery, etc (depending on style..anything goes)

An everyday bag in a neutral colour (mine is a Miu Miu black Bow)
An everyday bag in a brighter colour (I'm waiting for my Balenciaga raisin RH City to be delivered)
A classic bag for work (My HG is a Hermès Birkin)
A dressy bag (Chanel classic flap for instance)
A clutch or pouch for going out at night (mine is a Lady Dior Pouch)

And I would also add a big bag for travel/weekend...

This thread is such a coincidence given I just made a similar list of my next purchases, but including labels and styles. To broaden the horizons of essential bags, I'll state "types.":

1. The Luxury Bag
2. The Everyday, Casual Bag
3. The Throw-Around Bag
4. The Masculine, Edgy Bag
5. The Just-for-Fun Pleasure Bag

After I fulfill these next bags (hopefully by summer), I will officially ban myself from tPF for quite some time.

This is my personal list- mostly because of the different uses of each bag. I have yet to get my hands on a Celestina clutch and an LV Speedy.
1. Chanel Flap
2. LV Speedy 30
3. Balenciaga City
4. Celestina Clutch
5. Gucci Hobo of any kind
