As most have already said, it's not really about brands and specific bags, but uses that come into play. Here is my list:

1. comfy hobo or crossbody
2. "bad weather" bag (something like patent leather or nylon but still fabulous!)
3. satchel that can be dressed up or down
4. a fun bag (either in design or color)
5. practical clutch

1. Day bag for winter (Balenciaga City/Chanel Jumbo/Hermès Birkin/Dior Gaucho in a darker colour)
2. Day bag for summer (Balenciaga City/Chanel Jumbo/Hermès Birkin/Dior Gaucho in a brighter colour)
3. Tote for work/school/college (Gucci/LV/Longchamp in a neutral colour)
4. Going out/formal occasions bag (a clutch or a smaller flap bag; in black, jewel tone or metallic)
5. Bad weather bag (Prada/Chanel/Gucci/LV in a darker colour and in coated canvas)

1. an amazing clutch no matter if designer or low budget but it has to be a show stopper
2. an all time classic like LV, Hermes, Goyard or BV
3. a red bag to put some color in everyday outfits, besides red is sexy;) and it would be good if it was made of the smoothest leather you can imagine
4. a patent bag (hobo or tote) preferbly in black or cream
5. a beach bag that looks like a basket

i think it totally depends on the person and their lifestyle/preferences, but here are the five types that i reach for most often:

1. everyday bag in a neutral (mine is a black satchel)
2. everyday bag in a fun color or style (mine is a mustard hobo; also doubles as a bad weather bag)
3. larger bag for travel
4. crossbody bag - i use for errands
5. evening bag/clutch

2. a big tote/hobo-any brand
3. a pop of color bag-I love my Ysl berry MUse
4. A big gaudy ( in a good way Gucci lovers)looking Gucci (ok my choice)
5. A cross body bag-2 favs Hermes evelyn or LV bloomsbury
6. If you go out to fancy places balls etc- a hot evening bag by a great designer

Brand- let the person choose what she likes!

1.) small, sparkly evening bag or clutch for formal occasions
2.) pochette that fits on the shoulder for fun nights out and dancing
3.) a smooshy, slouchy leather shoulder bag that's really comfy to wear
4.) a classic shape bag for dressier occasions (ie. speedy, flap, etc.)
5.) structured work tote or purse appropriate for conservative environments

and I'll add a number 6....
6) something in a wild color, a statement bag, whatever catches your eye the most-- a bright cherry red, electric blue, bright purple, etc.
