wearing designer bags over 5 years old

Some bags become classics, some vintage and some just Old and Dated. I have a collection of too dated to wear for my age but the kids love them. So I think it just depends. I can't image taking out the Dooney with the Duck, HCL, Bally, Givenchy, Mark Cross, Coach, Gucci Boston or LV speedy, Jimmy Choo Ramona, Chloe Paddington ot Marc Jacobs w pockets. I do love my older Tods, Fendi, Bal, and Chanel. If only I could figure this out before I bought them but they were fun in their day. Garage sale anyone? :graucho:

I'm not familiar with those bags u mentioned above, but I personally think LV Speedy n Gucci Boston will still look good today on any age. Unless its Limited Edition like Graffiti Speedy.

I know I wouldn't carry Graffiti Speedy when I get old so I won't buy this kind of print as much as I admired it when it was just released.

I might not wear my Balenciaga, Alexa when I get much older. Don't think the style looks classy for very matured ladies. I try to imagine Queen Elizabeth with certain design....if I think she won't look good, then I know I also won't want to carry such bag when I'm old.

But for now....I totally have no problem taking all my old bags. Some r more than 10 years! As long as they r not in bright neon color lol.

If you don't know how to style your outfit, even new trendy bags will look tacky. If you know how to style your outfit, even old "it" bags will look cool.

I agree with this- it's all about the clothes and how we choose to wear things. I often see great bags that look ridiculous because the person wearing them has styled them badly, or not at all...

I don't care I still wear my Marc Jacobs with pockets! The calfskin leather is sooooo nice & still looks fab a decade later. I have continued to get compliments in 2015 on my 2005 purchase [emoji173]️

Absolutely agree!

Honestly I think that's why some of the more recognizable logo bags get a bad rap - they can look beautiful if well styled but can clash like ridiculous if the rest of the outfit isn't well thought out.

Wear what you think looks good and not what other people think you should wear based on their own unknown variables of judgement.
totally agree but when your are on the hunt for a new bag i find myself dithering as to what bag will be appropriate and will serve me right in the long run since i can't splurge on a new bag every 3 or so years. Im not a huge fan of lv. But i find many people tend to buy lv speedy/ neverfull, dior staple bags, chanel flaps and balenciaga simply because it't hard to tell when they were bought hence they will always be trendy. But im not a fan of these bags! And i prefer some seasonal bags that are easily linked to a certain year hmm and now i feel i have too many dated bags that i love and know how to style but they are oldies

I buy my bags to wear for a long time, I mean years. I choose to buy bags that I won't be embarrassed to carry when the bag gets discontinued. I choose simple styles. Where I live most people carry the same bag until they get no use out of it. I believe most people judge our clothes and shoes harsher when it comes to current fashion than purses. There are a lot of people who can't afford fancy purses that would love to own one even one that's discontinued. A beautiful purse is a beautiful purse. :smile1:

Hmm...I bought my Bals cuz I love them not cuz ppl won't know how old the bags are. I'd argue bag lovers don't really care about when the look of the bag is made and judge ppl based on it.

If you go through all the responses so far, most dont think older bags are a faux pas and the one out of ten who do, have very specific use cases; but if you still don't feel right carrying them then just don't. It clearly is about how you feel either way.

Or if you really wanna know more about what a bunch strangers online think, maybe you should post some photos and give us some examples of bags you find embarrassing to carry. We certainly don't mind the eye candy :)

+1
Just follow your heart and do what is best for you. You have to determine what you want out of the bag. It seems like you want to carry only the latest bags, so that means you would have to constantly buy and sell to keep up with the latest trends. Or, you can buy quirky bags from brands that people are not familiar with. I like doing the opposite by buying bags that transcend time. I don't care if it's discontinued because most things made are discontinued. Businesses have to find new ways for us to open our wallets.

Reviving the old thread.
I love classic bags, so mine (even vintage ones) are not dated. I think what is important for the bag to be in good coordination with the clothes and it is still in good condition. And NOT smelly / musty.

but do you think it's appropriate to wear an old bag to a gala party, not vintage, just from some old collection?

I think I get what you're saying. The classics, of course, can be worn whenever and forever, but there is a certain number of years when the "it" bag of, say, 2011 is perhaps not quite old enough to be "vintage," and may just look out of style. Possibly. It probably depends on the specific bag and how you wear it. I have a tendency to not want to carry the "it" bag when everyone else is, so if I love it, I'll often buy it and then actually put it away until everyone else stops using it. So by the time I carry it, it may be 10 years old even though it's new. Maybe the question is, when is an "it" bag vintage and when is it just out of fashion? :smartass:I'm thinking you'd have to approach it on a case by case basis.

I didn't start my handbag obsession until my children were grown and I was in my late 40's. I made some "mistakes" in the beginning because I really didn't know what I liked. I sold/gave away those "mistakes" after a few years. I now have some Chanel classics, a few Hermes and a couple of others. All my bags are between 6-16 years old. I take very good care of my bags. I am now 64 and expect these to last the rest of my life. I will pass them down to my daughter and her 2 daughters. I certainly didn't spend thousands of dollars on a bag that I only expected to last a couple of years. Buy what you love and wear it with pride. Take care of them and they will bring you joy for many years.
