i just cannot see this store selling something for over $800. this store sells cheap crap jewelry and cheap PVC handbags.

has your boyfriend ever bought jewelry before? why did he go to landau?
just seems odd to walk into a place you know nothing about and spend close to $1K.

and it's just one location passing off the stuff as real, all others are costume stores?

call the headquarters for sure and discuss this with them. they need to investigate that store.

anyone walking past the roosevelt field mall store would be able to see it's not a real jewelry store.

I'm sorry but I don't see that he was treated 'unfairly'. People have said that this company is well known for it's costume jewellry. So because HE didn't know, nor did he do research, before paying a higher price for a fake, HE was treated unfairly? Did he bother to ask questions as to the quality of the pearls or diamonds? Did he ask what karat gold it was, or did he just assume it was all real? I believe the OP said he paid less than $900.

So it's not "unfair" for someone to lie and tell you that what you are buying is pearls w/ white gold and a diamond when really its just overpriced junk that he could have bought at Claire's? If that's not unfair I don't know what is.

And yes, $800 for a pearl necklace w/ one teeny tiny diamond is not outside the realm of reasonable pricing. Like I said before, Tiffany sells a couple of 16 inch pearl necklaces for LESS.

Also, I've stated NUMEROUS times that he asked questions about the necklace and was told it was (freshwater) pearls, white gold (14K) and a real (although very small) diamond. And he's not the only one who heard this line of lies- his brother was there and heard it all too.

I'm starting to think that you just like stirring the pot. This situation isn't a guy going into a jewelry store and paying $29 and crossing his fingers that the necklace was real. This is a smart, educated man looking for a nice gift for his GF's big day and being taken by someone who is an outright liar. There's a big difference.

so if they told you it was freshwater pearls, 14K gold, and a real diamond, and it's not, then call your credit card company for a chargeback. or go back to the store and demand a refund on those grounds of it not being as advertised.

what location was this?

This is what has me so bothered! This store is new to our area- I'd never seen it before or heard of it. My friend and I, who are both huge jewelry people, went in together and found absolutely no indications that the merchandise in there would be fake! I, myself, would have been fooled- and I went to law school and know how to look for disclaimers! It looks like a regular jewelry store. With that being said, there are a number of other jewelry stores in close proximity to this store, which I'm starting to think is why this place doesn't exactly want to advertise the fact that it's selling fake stuff.

Sorry this has happened to you.... but if I was you and had been to law school (like you) I would be:

a) going back to the store to 'blind them' with so much legal jargon that you scare them into giving you a refund

or

b) sending a legal letter to their customer service on their website explaining that you feel you have been duped and will sue them!

Hope you get your refund.

Hi I'm so sorry for you glamgirl! :(
I don't think it's right to flame her boyfriend and say that he was ignorant for buying a $800 pearl strands. I'm a woman and I don't know heck about pearls and $800 I'd think it's real too if there were no signs in the store saying they are glass pearls. I don't think there's anything wrong for a man trying to buy jewelry with no knowledge whatsoever and believed in what the SA has told him. Because afterall, a SA is supposed to be the one with the knowledge and educate the buyer. Most of us can drive doesn't mean we know everything about cars when we buy one; or, ya, we listen to whatever our doctor tells us, but when has anyone check to see if your doctor is a real doctor? (This is a lame example but I did find out my ex-dentist is not registered under the legistration of dentistry or something like that. That was really weird and sketchy)

Sorry I couldn't help much. But Glamgirl you should definitely try contacting a higher-up in the company.

As a lawyer, or at least a former law student, should KNOW that is fraudulent behaviour not to mention illegal. If they did actually do this then you AND your boyfriend need to take it back and speak to the manager. Tell them that the sales associate -and have that person's name ready - mislead you and you demand a refund. Why? Because, if that actually is the case, you were defrauded. But you had better have proof that the sales associate actually claimed the piece was real. And your boyfriend's brother's word isn't going to cut it.

As for their return policy, I don't see why that store would tell you that it was 'exchange only' yet the website has a completely different policy. These are things YOU need to point out to the manager of the store the purchase came from. I don't know if they have the return policy listed in the store, or on the receipt, because you've yet to answer that question

Also, I've stated NUMEROUS times that he asked questions about the necklace and was told it was (freshwater) pearls, white gold (14K) and a real (although very small) diamond. And he's not the only one who heard this line of lies- his brother was there and heard it all too.

Prior to the current post I'm quoting, you 'stated' this information ONCE. Reply #23, page 2, and that was only in rebuttal to my questioning, to another poster, about the basis of the credit card claim. This little tidbit of important information was never given in the first post, as it should have been, and none thereafter. Again, if this fraudulent behaviour did happen then you should be pushing for a full refund and a heartfelt apology.

I'm starting to think that you just like stirring the pot. This situation isn't a guy going into a jewelry store and paying $29 and crossing his fingers that the necklace was real. Too funny! If 'stirring the pot' was my intention I would have more posts, especially in this thread. I'm a lawyer and it's my job to see different sides of stories and debate things especially when they don't add up. If you want me to be brutally honest with you, I find your story implausible. There's just too many things that don't make sense. I can't believe that a 'smart, educated man' didn't realize that he was buying a fake, especially since there were no markings of it being real gold. I don't know what the piece looks like, since you've yet to post a picture and you claim this piece isn't on their website, so I can't tell you if it appears real or like a piece of costume jewellry therefore worth the $900 he paid for it. Landau Jewelry is forthcoming that the pieces are costume yet the sales associate, in this store, blatantly told your boyfriend that the pieces were real? Seems rather odd to me. Not only did they put their job on the line but the company's reputation as well. I also find it hard to believe that this is the ONLY store that doesn't have signs indicating the authenticity of their pieces or their refund policy in full view. Sorry but it just seems 'fishy' to me. If I'm wrong then you have my apologies.

^ That's funny, I just graduated law school and was going to post a virtually identical post last night, but didn't want to give the appearance of offering legal advice without yet being admitted :D

Great! Then I have your apologies.

Like I said this store is new to the area and doesn't have signs or anything out front, nor are there signs inside. The only signage is the "Landau Jewelry" name above the door. It looks like any other jewelry store. I took camera phone pics to this effect when I visited the other day & am ready to show them to a CS rep when we get ahold of one. You can say it's as "fishy" or "implausible" as you like, but I'm the one whose been to the store and seen it first hand. If you are a lawyer then you should know that people (sales clerks, mechanics, car salesmen, etc etc etc) "risk their jobs" and lie to induce a sale ALL THE TIME. It's certainly been done for much less then a cut of $800.

We are working on getting the $ back and I'm confident we will. Thanks to everyone who expressed support! Even though this whole thing is a pain in the neck I'm glad that someone is speaking up to let upper management know about what's going on at this particular location- if Landau is, in fact, a reputable up-front company then I'm sure they'll be happy to know that one of their franchises is skirting company policy & using the Landau name to con unsuspecting shoppers at a new location. If my BF could be fooled, anyone could (even you Miss Socialite!) so in a way I'm glad to be a part of bringing this particular store's practices to light. Hopefully it will prevent others from being suckered by this smooth talking SA.

I also find it hard to believe that this is the ONLY store that doesn't have signs indicating the authenticity of their pieces or their refund policy in full view.

If you'd like to visit the store and see for yourself I'd be happy to PM you the location! Otherwise I'd appreciate you not questioning my honesty. It's rude, not to mention inappropriate. Thanks :smile1:

i know this thread hasn't been posted in for a few days but i just found it. anyway, i have to say i think miss socialite has every right to question your honesty because she's right, your story seems a bit strange. i don't see how questioning you is rude & inappropriate. when you post on a public forum people have the right to question you & disbelieve what you have to say. when people ask you questions irl do you call them rude & inappropriate as well? you never answered her questions about the return policies or posted pictures. i also can't believe you're having such a hard time retuning a piece when you said your bf's brother was a witness to this all. there's other things i find strange about your whole tale but I can't be bothered to write it all out. i have been to quite a few landau stores as well as shopped on line & there are signs all over the place as to what the merchandise is. I have also never had an issue returning merchandise & getting my money back, both online & in store. i find your story that the store your bf shopped in is the only one w/o signs & the only store that wont give a refund lol.

I saw this and just had to post...

I too fell victim of Landau...UGH!!! I found a pair of "14KT White Gold, 1/4 carat diamond" hoop earrings. They were just over $200, being on sale. I quickly snatched them up. I asked about their warranty, such as if a "diamond" fell out, and she said bring it back they would replace them or give me my money back. I was on top of the world that I had these earrings.

I was wearing them that night and some one asked where I got them. I told them Landau. She was like "NO YOU DIDN'T!!!" And told me how they are a rip off and lie to their customers. Since they were still open til 11 (I was in Vegas), I went to the closest Landau and said I wanted my money back. They said there were no refunds and to talk to the lady who told me she would give me my money back. She also said that the hoops I bought WERE NOT real and had CZs and does not know why the other lady would tell me that.

So I go back where I got them and she is off work. I go back the next day and she was like "I can give you a store credit." And I argued with her that she said she would give me my money back. She said she was sorry she misinformed me and couldn't. She also told me that they were plated and sorry if she misinformed me about that also. She is kept changing the subject when I was talking about the "diamonds". I am still fighting with them.

Just curious if you got your money back?
