I'm so proud of myself! I let a bag go on eBay that I had been planning to buy. If anyone saw it, it was the really pretty pre-creed crescent bag with the metal tag. The last photo of the auction had a gold necklace and lemons on the bag which made it look so much more beautiful to me, for whatever odd reason. I loved the color and the patina. I've watched that bag get re-listed several times with no bids but this time buyers took notice and it sold for $80. I knew it was a style that was unlikely to carry but I wanted it for the color and the metal tag. I have to say that since I finally bought my orange Courier I feel like I can stop looking. I'm done. I can clear my watch list and just feel content with what I have. That's pretty awesome.
I was watching that as well..but bag ban has been killing so many dreams this month.
So wishing I could have gotten the Gucci...same style bag are three times the price.

I'm gonna have to join you over on Ban Island.

I'm curious, what makes Gucci worth three times the price? Are the materials or workmanship that much better than a good sturdy vintage Coach? I've never seen one in real life.

I dont really know ..any gucci will be my first gucci. Was watching a vintage I think Amalfi Hobo.. NZ$274 shipping and tax not included...seen another one for about $500 to buy...so once you add shipping tax its just too much for me.
Eta.So not really 3 times the price but more expensive then I want to pay.

Most of the time another even better deal appears. That has happened to me every time except for the time I stopped bidding on a Bonnie Cashin safari bag when it went over $70.

IMO, they aren't worth 3 times the price. I've had a couple Guccis but nothing recent. The materials and workmanship aren't better. One time I bought a 90s Gucci at a thrift store that was very similar in design to a Coach Gramercy I had. I did a side by side comparison. The Gucci had a broken strap and peeling on the inside. The Gramercy had a nice suede interior and the strap was still intact. Both bags were made in Italy.

Gucci costs more because it is a premium brand, while Coach isn't. I'm planning on buying a new Gucci sometime this year because there is a style I really like.

I guess I just want to have one bag...never know...might find in Italy in march. The newer styles dont appeal to me...Im more interested in vintage.

One thing that buying and using vintage Coach has done is teach me what to look for in other potential bags. So far I haven't found any brand, vintage or contemporary, that speaks to me the way vintage Coach does. I might be drawn to a style visually, but when I compare the functionality, price, workmanship and materials, Coach always wins.

Agree with your there...I compare my brand new bought leather bags to the vintage Coach bags I have and the Coach leather is much superior. After reading that article about leather I now know why.

There are services that'll ship items across the border to you. I just had a woman in QC buy a pair of shoes from me that will be routed through such a provider in Kentucky. Oddly enough, I'm in Canada, too, but ship through the US b/c over 99% of my buyers are in the US. I'd be curious to know what she pays for shipping in the end...

Alternatively, if you live near the border and make trips across the line, there's likely a receiving place in the border town. I note even North Dakota has them for shoppers from Winnipeg.

Thanks for the tip, spirangle! Unfortunately (or fortunately?) I don’t live near a border town. I didn’t know about the forwarding service before though so I’d be curious to see what they charge. Do you have one you would recommend?

The service you're referring to that goes to Kentucky is the GSP (Global shipping program) and is expensive (for buyers). As I understand, in addition to shipping fees, the buyer is charged for customs fees, even if an item is priced under the threshhold. Since customs charges tend to be random, many items that are shipped directly to buyers aren't charged fees plus, the shipping cost is considerably less (for the buyer) when the item is shipped directly.

The reason a lot of sellers like GSP is that it's easier for them. They don't have to fill out customs forms or sign declarations. For sellers, it's just like shipping to any other domestic buyer.
