I remember the dinky/penny bag coming up a short bit ago around here, I just found this picture on Pinterest showing the Dinky with the eyelet/grommet strap configuration and a 1973 date on it. Not sure where it originates, Coach archives maybe? View attachment 3989950
Thank you for sharing. Indeed, the pencil sketch appears to be of the style COACH employed in the early years. Probably from an anniversary advert. And since it clearly shows a bag having a double-strand removable strap, I believe that it's now safe to say that the original Dinky was indeed different from the fixed-strap design that that we're all familiar with. So I'm going to go out on a limb and hypothesize that the first version of the Dinky (with the grommet hole/dog leash fitting attachment removable strap) was available from it's introduction in 1973 through to 1979 (based on having seen examples of this style identified with the successive methods of metal tag, cartouche imprint, creed stamp, and creed stamp + ###-####) and that the design change to the fixed single-strand strap occurred in 1980 (which agrees with the text in the NYMag article and that I've only seen this version identified with creed stamp + ###-#### and later identifying number systems). As for the origins of the name "Penny" (prior to the 2012 Legacy releases), that remains a mystery.

Just before I joined tPF a few years ago, Coach did that anniversary project where they bought old bags and refurbished them ( the promo was on the Coach website until about a year ago). A woman who was once active here was involved in the project and was featured on the Coach website.
I would almost swear that the fringed bag was one of the makeovers and I believe that little blurb was included with the purchase. I just saw that bag posted on Pintrest last night too.

There’s a thread called Coach Is Having An Auction that has a couple of photos on it but not the particular fringed one above. I thought I remembered that too from somewhere. And if you google Coach Anniversary Auction, there are more images.

Besides all the cottage industry customizers out there, there was the COACH Barney's NY "collaboration" which saw fringes applied to several iconic styles:

I believe that the program you're referring to from a couple of years back (and which I recall Debi did play a role as an aggregator who enlisted "volunteers" in acquiring vintage inventory from the resale marketplaces) was one for the European (and other foreign?) markets that saw patches appliqued to a selection of classic vintage styles. I remember that several tPf members voiced rather divergent opinions about these modified items on one of the threads back when photos became available.

Slightly off topic, but I see a catalog photo in this link you’ve attached that I’ve never seen before! A bag that’s come up before with an unknown style name/number. It’s very hard to make out, but almost looks like Saddle Bag Large? The one above the Crescent bag.

Thanks for sharing, neat! IMG_1457.jpg

I've got 3 of those babies! (Saddle bag large) that is. But I don't know if I've seen that picture before either.

Exciting! I wish we could read it. That also looks like the long handled skinny flight bag, but it has a shorter name.

Yes. I stumbled onto old posts and got a feel for some of the feelings people here had over that.
Interestingly enough, when I decided I wanted to research how to thoroughly condition a vintage Coach leather bag, I first found her youtube video, which lead me to her website, which lead me here to tPF.
