Recent thrift store buy- a 9816 slim duffle sac, a bag we don’t see much on this thread. This is a great bag! Love the larger outside pocket that keeps my phone snug as a bug. Just big enough to hold everything without wasted space. I hate digging in my purse for stuff. It is ok crossbody on me as I am tall but on someone shorter it may be out of proportion. I can definitely see adding a couple tea roses on that front pocket to snazz things up a bit.

It is! And it carries a lot for such a small bag! I can fit all my stuff and then some! If you’re tall though the strap might be a bit short; I think the max drop on mine is about 20”, which is perfect for me but might be a tad short if you’re tall or prefer a lower drop. So just look out for that.
thanks. I'll keep that in mind.

I have a question about the vintage Standard Courier Bag 8920. I've seen several catalog descriptions of the bag that reference an inside zipper pocket, but my pre-creed courier has an inner slip pocket - no zipper.

I have checked ebay and found some 8920 bags with creeds that really do have an inner zipper pocket. Do you think that the reason my bag has a slip pocket is because it is pre-creed and older, or maybe it's not the 8920 bag but a different version of the courier?

I found this pre-creed Courier on Poshmark and it also has a slip pocket: https://poshmark.com/listing/Vintag...eather-Style-No-8920-6274466c3a0db981c88e3db4

@katev Hi Katev, I purchased a Courier just like this (posted on authenticate thread yesterday). Black, metal tag, slip pocket. I was really surprised that the feel of the leather was light and stiff and nothing like my older NYC bags. Brass buckles have no brass stamp or anchors. Can you comment on the feel of the leather on your bag?

I have 5 Couriers now - I love them!! From my research, the cartouche bags have no zipper on the inside pocket. I know @whateve is the expert here with early bags - my apologies if I am stepping on thin ice for responding because I am by no means an expert.

With that said, the leather on all of my Couriers is different. Two of my large Couriers have this super smooth insanely soft leather. Another large one has very thick, stiff leather - it feels incredibly structured. No slouchyness at all and the leather is very crinkly and has a ton of "character". One of my small Couriers is super soft but almost looks pebbled. The other small Courier is a mix between this pebbled leather and super smooth. I love all the unique differences!

Here's an article that talks about cowhides, creeds and other fun facts that may be of use to you.

That's so helpful to know! Thank you!

No anchors or brass markings on mine but I don't think that I've ever had a bag with anchors on the brass fittings and I don't really know when I should be looking for them.

My Courier doesn't have leather that is heavy and soft (like Costa Rican leather) but the leather on older bags sometimes gets a little dried out. That's often why the bags wrinkle or get a pebbled appearance and that may make them feel a little stiffer; regular moisturizer may help soften it up. But you can't always go by the feel of the leather, I have had varied experiences with the leather on different bags. I remember rehabbing 2 different vintage Patricia's Legacy bags that had different feeling leathers, one of them was a little pebbled and stiffer and the other was smoother and softer.

Rehabbing a bag can also make it feel stiffer and more structured but it may soften with time and wear.

I don't have a lot of experience with the very early vintage Cashin bags. My only other pre-creed bag is my little Cashin Small Shopper but the leather isn't real thick and soft on that bag either, but I figure that it's okay for a Lady that is almost 60 years old to be a little stiff!

Here are a couple pics.. The burgundy one has the stiff and structured feel. The leather is not dry. I like to think that the cow was a tough broad who embraced her age.
The mahogany one ... that bag put me through the ringer.. The previous owner loved peppermint candies.. There were melted candies meshed into the suede as well as just crushed up pieces on the bottom of the bag.. Oh, and tons of hair. It was so nasty! I was gagging and wore a hazmat suit while cleaning but she has a beautiful patina and is so soft!
