How exciting! It’s nice when all the work is done. What brand of appliances did you choose?

I spend my money on bags and travel. After waiting for the pandemic to recede I finally booked this year’s trip to our St Croix villa. We alternate between Europe and the Caribbean. I've really missed traveling! Our last big trip was to Rome and Venice right before the pandemic was officially declared.

Looking forward to seeing this view again!
That's gorgeous! I've always wanted to visit St. Croix. I went on a cruise to the Caribbean when I was young and loved it, but I was sick when we got to St. John so I never got off the boat.

I've got a mix of appliances. I have a Dacor gas stovetop with downdraft fan. I chose Dacor because I had that in another house we built and I loved it. For the dishwasher and oven, I wanted Bosch but the waiting time is a year or more so I ended up with Electrolux. I haven't used the oven yet but I'm excited because it has air frying and other features the Bosch didn't have. The glasses I've washed in the new dishwasher look new so it is working much better than our old one. We also have a Frigidaire microwave and a GE trash compactor. I tried to choose appliances with minimal branding. I love the clean look of no logos. The dishwasher and compactor have completely plain stainless fronts without any logos or buttons.

Me too. Did a week in California in Jan, another week there in May and then Italy in July. I love Italy too.
Good for you! Italy has the best coffee, pasta, and gelato! In Paris, I’m crazy for the chocolate shops and bread/pastries. The only reason we lose weight on those trips is we walk mega miles. And stairs, stairs, stairs…everywhere stairs!

Hey guys, I got my eyes on Janice 9950 my only concern is the strap lenght. Im quiet short 5’0. im wondering if anyone of my short gals have this bag and can share how the strap length is going for them.. thanks so much!
I'm 5'4" and have it on the longest setting. The drop is 23 inches. The top of the bag hits me about 3 inches below my hipbone worn crossbody. There are 4 holes on each side of the strap so it can be shortened to a drop of 19 inches at the minimum. I don't think you'll have any problem.

How about the refrigerator?

We didn't replace that. It's 20 years old and still going strong. It's a GE with water and ice on the door.
We have a great older refrigerator but I want everything to match. So we’re keeping our Whirlpool with water and ice in the door too. It has never broken down in 28 years. It’ll be in the garage once we figure out where to put it and then buy all new. Nothing wrong with any of our appliances but I want to update them. New ones aren’t as well-made so I keep looking.

Oh the food in Italy. And the Mediterranean scirocco. I lived in Sicily about 15 years ago and haven’t made it back since :crybaby:

I could go without travel for a while though. I’m terrified that I’ll get stuck somewhere! I’m on the home improvement train with @whateve.

All the new appliances are stainless. The oven and microwave have black glass. The gas stove is stainless with black grates. The old refrigerator is stainless with black sides. I think everything coordinates well. I never want to give up the ice on the door. We had Sub-zero in one of our houses in the past. They look nice but don't have the features we like. We use that ice on the door 20 times a day between us.

I really needed new appliances. The glass top stove only had one working burner because I refused to get it fixed since I really wanted gas. The oven was ancient and took forever to heat up. The dishwasher never got anything clean. The trash compactor was fine but old and grimy and didn't match anything. There was nothing wrong with the microwave. One of the best decisions I made was to not put the new microwave over the oven. Our old one was there and it was too high for me. Once I decided to put the microwave in another place I didn't have to worry about it matching the oven. The microwaves they make that match ovens are overpriced and don't even have good wattage. Having the oven and microwave in separate places means they are each at the perfect height.

We're done remodeling for now. We had two months of complete disruption. I had to empty out nearly half the house and store it in the other half. We had so much furniture stuffed in our great room that we had to squeeze to get by. Even though they put up plastic, there was dust everywhere. I would clean and a few hours later everything was covered with dust. If I did it again, I would cover all the furniture with sheets until it was over.

I'm still trying to figure out where to put everything.

The part of the house we didn't do looks sad compared to the new part but I don't know when we will be up for more disruption.

Haha thanks! Yep, I’m crazy for the same. I have a great Italian restaurant near my house but I can’t wait to go back to Italy this July to gorge on coffee, pasta and gelato every day. Begging for sun too as it’s been nothing but freezing and gloomy as usual in uk.

I spent time camping in France most summers as a child and one of my favourite memories is waking up every morning and cycling to the bakery to get fresh pastries for breakfast.

So I knew before visiting OC CA life is v car centric but once I was actually there experiencing it shocked me. For example, even when visiting what I was told was a ‘smaller’ strip, we couldn’t just walk from one shop to another. We had to get back in the car to drive across. The buildings are so spread out and short and the roads are soooo wide and straight. I knew the life was like this but seeing it felt so crazy. I’m 4’11 but felt even smaller!

Another time, I was hesitant to wear my comfy slip-on loafers as they don’t have any arch support and I didn’t want my feet to ache but I was lazy and wore them anyway. Well, turns out my feet didn’t ache because most of my day was spent sitting in the car going from place to place and then I was sat down eating at most places! Haha

I don’t have a car so I’m used to walking and taking the public transport everywhere where I live so it was a very different experience but I loved it and can’t wait to go back in May when the weather will be perfect and I can wear nice spring/summer clothes. I have more bags and slgs waiting there for me again…. Lol x

I'm just a little under an inch shorter than you:) I usually wear my Janice on the 2nd shortest length (on the 2nd hole from the middle), in crossbody. I've got a really short torso and like to wear my bags a little higher than is usual, I think:lol:

I understamd. That’s why I skipped our Europe trip and opted for the US Virgin island of St Croix. Traveling back to the mainland is considered to be just like traveling domestically within the US. There’s a little bureaucracy getting down there but not bad.

OC isn't representative of the US. It is a very congested crowded place. I live in California but avoid So Cal as much as I can. I hate the traffic. It is car centric where I live too but there are places to park, and once we park we can walk from one shop to another. Much of California is full of agriculture; where I live, we have open fields, orange groves, and almost as many cows as people.

If you go to NYC, you'll take public transport and walk everywhere. When I visited my daughter in NYC, I was exhausted after 3 days.

When I visited the Caribbean a very long time ago when I was young, I dreamed about getting a job in St. Croix so I could live in paradise.
