Ving Rhames dog mauled man to death

i did not realize they put the dog down. women tried to kill herself and dog saves her. so why put him down? if he were my dog, I would feel like he was my angel or something for saving me. how terrible.

^^ That woman had a few issues in her life and after her face transplant she has even more. I feel sorry for her having to go through all that.
But back on topic - that's terrible what happened. As much as I love animals, stuff like this gives dogs (and their owners) a bad name.

Us Weekly has unearthed this spooky article from the 1999 that Ving Rhames gave to The Los Angeles Times.

In a 1999 interview with the Los Angeles Times, the Pulp Fiction star showed off his “petrifying” Ambullneo mastiff named Samson and his three mastiff puppies — Storm, Scorsese and Cage (the latter two were named after director Martin Scorsese and actor Nicolas Cage, with whom Rhames worked on the film Bringing Out the Dead).

He also talked about his 170-pound Fila Brasileiro named Kong.

“The dog was actually bred to guard slaves,” Rhames said. “It was the only dog they found that had the temperament to guard a slave. It could be around you every day, but if you tried to run away, it would deal with you like it never saw you before.”

The Times reporter joked, “Just as you are thinking how helpful this will be to the forensic specialists, he pulls the dog away with his free hand before it can playfully disembowel you.”

During the interview, Rhames lavished his canines with attention, at times speaking to them in baby talk.

Still, despite their intimidating appearance, Rhames insisted that his dogs were all bark no bite. “He just wants to play,” Rhames said of Kong.

i wonder how long the man had worked for him maybe the dogs didnt trust him
those dogs are not known for be aggressive what so ever
maybe the man went after 1 of the dogs & they all attacked
i think they it is possible they may have been provoked in some way
maybe the dogs were tryin to save him??
who knows thats really sad

I guess the breed was a Fila Brasileiro.

It is described as:

The Fila Brasileiro is an excellent estate gaurdianand cattle dog. It does not hide its aversion to strangers, consequently these dogs are not disqualified from the show ring for showing aggression to the judge. Their faithfulness to family and friends is legendary. It should be noted that this is not a breed for everyone. The Fila needs a confident, experienced owner who can properly curb the breed's natural aggression towards strangers. Because of its aggression, it is not well suited to busy households which have many guests. Such aggression is instinctive in Filas, so much so that the Brazilian breed standard advises show judges not to touch the dog. However, the FCI standard allows for disqualification of very aggressive dogs. Few Filas will attack for no reason, but none will be friendly with strangers.
Filas love and bond strongly with their immediate families. They live to protect their loved ones, including children and other pets. They do not readily accept strangers and need an extended introduction period to warm up to others they do not know. Some will never warm up to any stranger. Some bloodlines have less temperament than others and might accept a stranger if introduced properly by the owner, but it should never be assumed that every Fila can be trained to accept strangers. They are known to play very well with children and take a great deal of "abuse" from them, as long as they are family. Filas are extremely loyal & protective and they love being around their owners.

why isnt the dog shot already hello???

Number one, because this is a civilized country where we don't just go around shooting dogs.

Number two, it would be a travesty to simply kill an animal/person before an investigation was complete. As it appears at the moment, wounds were only to his arms and legs and were not life-threatening, thus, police do not believe the dogs killed the victim. So thankfully the authorities did not have a knee-jerk reaction and shoot the dogs on sight.

I think this is a horrible, horrible story. I for one totally agree with LVShoeFan2, also. And this is coming from someone whose dog AND husband were once attacked and seriously injured by a pit bull.

As many other people who clearly know dogs have pointed out, mastiffs are highly unlikely to attack much of anything except the best seat on the couch. Filas, on the other hand, are a very different breed, and just like many dogs who have had certain traits bred into them over generations upon generations, they are true to their breed. It's not their fault that they display aggressive tendencies; that's what they were intended to do.
Also, without proper training, or WITH abuse, nearly any dog can become aggressive. Some are just more prone to it based on their bloodlines.

This is why I have two golden retrievers. They shed, but if they ever kill me it will be because they licked me to death or smothered me while they were sitting on my lap!

THANK YOU! I was biting my tongue not to say anything...

I grew up in Maui, Hawaii up in Kula on a huge ranch. One day my brother was riding his dirt bike with our rottweiler grizzly. Somehow my brothers heel/foot got caught in the back tire (he was wearing flip flops). My brother lost tons of blood. He said grizzly left for 10 mins or so not sure. We assume he ran back to the house to look for help as my brother could hear him barking. When grizzly came back my brother said he must have been on shock as he could not feel anything. Grizzly dragged my brother at least 150 ft. by his arm. When my mom and I came back from the store my brother was on the front lawn, blood everywhere and his arm full of bite marks. In the end my brother healed after numerous skin grafts from his thigh. Grizzly to this day my brother always brings up memories of his dog, 15 years later.

That is amazing. If my dog saved my life I would talk about him forever too!!!

Man Killed in Dog Attack at Actor's Home
Aug 3, 1:48 PM EST

A 40-year-old man was mauled to death by as many as four dogs at the home of Ving Rhames on Friday, authorities said.

The victim, who hasn't been identified, had worked at the actor's home for about two years and was responsible for caring for the dogs, said Los Angeles Police officer Sandra Gonzalez.

Four mastiffs were seized by animal services, she said.

Police got a call at 7:15 a.m. from someone reporting a dead body at the home. Gonzalez didn't know who made the call.

The victim was found on the front lawn, she said.

Rhames, 46, who appeared in the "Mission Impossible" series of films, wasn't at home when the attack occurred, she said.
