I'm not a vegetarian, but my mom and sister are and they both carry around leather bags.

My SIL is and she wears a leather Coach bag. I preface Coach on purpose because this is a girl who can own anything and loves the simplicity of Coach. I so admire her!! - Sorry, off topic. Anyway, she said she eats vegetarian more for health and just started wearing a fur jacket. :amazed:

I think it depends- if you are a veg because of animal rights and the torture they go through, then yes it would be hypocritical to go ahead and wear leather products. If you go veg strictly for the health benefits, because it's good for you, but could care less about the animal, then I guess it would not be the same. But idk.....it's a complicated issue.

I think we all want to do our part to help animals, whether by chosing not to eat their meat or by purchase products made out of them. That being said, I have 2 LV bags, both with minimal leather and one is preloved so has been recycled. I would rather have those bags which will be used for at least the next 10+ years and not contribute to anymore chemical or plastic waste from "pleather" or any other animal having to contribute to my purse obsession. Everything in moderation!

This is an interesting discussion.
I have been a vegetarian for 9 years, and I do not buy leather.
I would not judge another vegetarian who did, however, but for me I just prefer
not to. I have been having a rough time searching high and low for a nice bag that suits
my style, my budget, and is not leather!!!

I don't eat or wear or abuse sentience beings; a.k.a "it recognizes itself in a mirror" and is highly social, dauphins, apes, elephants, or humans. (I think there is a bird they are adding to this list too.) I also don't eat or wear anything endangered, I would hate to of been the one to eat the last of one's kind. (I would not want it done to me.)

I would pay more for a free range leather handbag, rather then caring the leather from an penned and abused animal. I want to show consideration for life around me, so that I feel life has more meaning for humans.

I am a vegan. I originally started due to avoidance of hormones and pesticides in my food. But now buy humanly treated dairy products. Would love a free range leather handbag. I should start a company.

I have 2 leather handbag but this issue bothers me. Without trees there is no air to breath, and no one alive to live a fashionable life.

"One of the main issues of late, as raised by Greenpeace’s“Slaughtering the Amazon” campaign, is that it’s the fashion industry—rather than the meat one—that is driving an increase in cattle farming. The result is that swathes of the Amazon continue to be cut down for grazing lands and growing soybeans for animal feed."

Have you checked out - Matt and Nat , Big Budha and Choocolate NY? Matt and Nat I believe are vegan. I cannot recall what the correct word is at the moment. Lol

This is tough. I am a vegetarian. I became one about 5 months ago. Before then I had bought a car with leather seats, bags with leather, 2 leather jackets, etc. I am not going to throw that all away because I don't eat meat.

yes, I do not eat meat for animal treatment reasons. However, in my opinion, the animal is being killed for food, not for its leather, and that is a by product. If the animal was being killed JUST for its skin (i.e. python, mink, etc), I would NOT buy that (never have, never will).

I'm vegetarian, although technically pescetarian, since I do occasionally eat fish. I do it solely for dietary reasons, so I don't feel that I have a conflict with my diet and using animal products.

If you're going to stop carrying leather bags for moral reasons, then have you also considered other animal products that are used in your daily life? Leather shoes and belts? Car seats? Honey, sugar, gelatin? Makeup and perfumes? Foods and toys for your pets?

There are many levels of what we call vegetarianism/veganism and many different reasons for why we choose to adhere to one lifestyle over another. At the end of the day, to each her own.

exactly.

ITA! I find it ridiculous that people would assume you throw away your leather goods. It is a decision to stop buying meat and/or leather goods. Not throw them away because it may 'appear' the wrong way... I've seen vegetarians and vegans throw away meat or milk products because they refuse to eat it.

I hate it when they do that. Stop buying it, but don't throw it away for crying out loud! That poor animal was sacrificed for nothing then... :s

exactly. and even if I did throw it all away, am I still a hypocrite because I use things with beeswax, other animal by products, etc...there is so much gray!

People should do what suits them. If you don't feel comfortable buying leather, don't! If you don't want to eat meat but eat fish, do! There shouldn't be any finger pointing. To each their own!
