I think it's vegans who are not supposed to use leather but some vegetarians actually do? Correct me if I'm wrong

I think you are right - it seems to be a spectrum, all the way from just not eating red meat to pure vegans who don't even eat honey.

I do try to eat 'less'meat than I used to, and I like my coated canvas bags (LAMB, LV, Guess) because they only have leather trim.

I like the idea of going veg but unfortunately I can't eat eggs or soy and that makes it very difficult to get adequate nutrition.

I work with a few vegetarians and a (health reasons) vegan and they all use leather bags, shoes, coats, etc.

Hi. I am just wondering if there are any purse lovers out there that don't eat meat but use leather handbags and shoes. If so how did you make the decision. I personally don't eat meat for many reasons and use leather for bags. I know it is hypocritical but when I tried not using leather everything kept falling apart. So I decided I do the best I can but I would rather use the leather then use synthetics that need to be replaced all the time. I still have an inner debate often with myself about this and am just wondering if I am on my own or if anyone else faces the same Delima.

I am glad some one moved my thread here and I find out I am not alone. :)

Hey SHHMOM! You are definitely not alone! I have been vegetarian now for 6 months. I love all my leather handbags and shoes and I would NEVER throw away all my bags and shoes just because I don't eat meat anymore. I see it as animals are killed for meat not for leather. I would like to hear from a vegetarian that doesn't use leather bags and wear leather shoes

I was a vegetarian for a few years but continued to carry leather. I didn't see any purpose in throwing away what I already had.

hello my name is holly... and i too am a vegetarian that still uses leather

 heheh VA= vegetarians anonymous

there is no easy way to really justify it, if you are a vegetarian for moral reasons rather than health... personally, i'd feel guilty if i killed a cow for mere consumption... but when i purchase leather i don't... it's a matter of personal choice

[FASHION] The animal dies to be reincarnated to a piece of art (a treasured and loved handbag) =)
[MEAT] The animal dies to be reincarnated into POOP =(

Hahahahahahaa ur comment was hilarious ^^^ anyways I just say do what u feel is right for yourself u should never let someone else or even yourself criticize u for your choices. If you want to carry a nice purse so be it!

According to my many strict vegan friends~ vegans do not use or consume ANY animal products including nothing made from animals..I recently found out that includes honey and beeswax even tho obtaining honey and beeswax is not in any way harmful to bees it is still an animal created product & avoided by vegans!:balloon:

I'm a loose vegetarian who aspires to be vegan ... for health & environmental reasons. I still use & buy leather, but I try the best I can to buy used shoes and handbags. Easier on my pocket and slightly less cruel.

I am vegan and I wear/buy leather bags. The way I can explain it is that people go through a variety of steps. Through the steps, people can decide why they are engaging in particular behaviors/actions.

My husband who is vegan does not wear any leather. Even his shoes and tennis shoes have no leather.

I care about animals, but I am not extreme about it. My main rationale is that I'm eating the food I like. And I still love high-end bags.

An individual should decide what feels right to them and the behaviors/actions that feel right to them.

Further, I would like to point out that there are many people who are full of contradictions. For instance, saying that that they believe people should behave a certain way, but behaving the complete opposite. For example, people saying that they are accepting of others as they come, but going around making fun of others, gossiping, and bullying.

In sum, vegetarians are not the only people trying to figure out where they stand. Ideals vs. behaviors.

So I wouldn't feel bad about it. Everyone is trying to figure out where they are. There are always some contradictions in some things.

I'm a vegan, and I'm currently still using the leather products I have but not buying any new ones. Easier said than done when it comes to purses! I'm actually a vegan primarily for health and environmental reasons, but animal rights aren't exactly unimportant to me, either... whatever the case, I know leather isn't always great for the environment, and I also don't want to be that "hypocritical" vegan who carries around a leather purse, lol.

As far as not eating honey or using beeswax, there is actually some disturbing stuff going on with honey bees right now. Scary stuff, and enough to make me stay away from honey. It's definitely a good idea to make sure you only buy your honey from 100% ethical honey farmers, if you're going to eat it! If we lose the bees, we lose a lot more than just honey. And a lot of the cheap honey is mixed with any number of things from all over the place. Ick.

I do agree with a lot of people, though, that using leather occasionally is nowhere near on the same level as eating meat every day! I feel a lot less guilty about using my leather purse and my car with leather seats than I do about eating meat or animal products every day. My leather purse is one small part of one cow; when I ate meat, I probably ate much more than one cow on a weekly basis! I plan on using my leather purse until it falls apart. :) I don't want it to go to waste.

Interesting. I've been a vegetarian for more than 20 years and I love my (handful of) leather shoes and bags. I could never claim to justify it completely, but it does matter to me that I feel in balance overall. I am a vegetarian primarily for moral reasons, but I have often wondered if I ever would have become a vegetarian if I lived in a society that had a better relationship with animals and wasn't so greedy and gluttonous. My handbag purchases are small in the overall scheme of things.

If you feel guilty after buying a leather bag or leather shoes, why not take some actions to "offset" your purchase, sort of like a carbon offset? Some examples -- post a Facebook post about the benefits of vegetarianism, cook a fabulous vegetarian meal for some skeptic carnivore friends, make a donation to and/or volunteer for an animal welfare charity. Arguably, the overall benefit of these actions for animal welfare will be greater than simply being a vegetarian.

Just a thought.
