vegetarians with leather bags?

I have no problems with vegetarians that carry leather. I think being vegetarian might be smart... as you are thinking about what you are putting in your body. What I have a issue with...is someone(like Pamela Anderson) who is a Radial member of PETA which screams JUDGEMENT at others for wearing fur, or any animal products....and then I see photos of her carrying her Birkin, wearing her louboutins, and being a hypocrite and a complete B__H to people that do similar!

Been vegetarian looooong time.
And buy leather goods.
Am picky about some unethical sourcing practices. And avoid exotics.
Enjoy recycled leather items, also.

Believe chemicals used to generate vinyl, pleather, etc. more harmful.
Plus imitation bags/shoes last a moment, then fall apart. Whereas good leather lasts decades.
Seems more environmentally kind, imo.

Have a strong dislike for deer.
Which I consider walking bags of Lyme disease, waiting to infest me with ticks.
Whilst never would harm live deer maliciously, feel best when they become leather.
No fears when near deer nappa bag. Glorious.

At end of day, myself I must live with--so choices are about self contentment.
Not perfection. ;)

Hope helps.

Who wants to wear imitation leather shoes. We need to be realistic and understand that dietary decisions will not always be practical to enforce into other areas of our life. No eating animals for nutrition fine but that's where I draw the line. Plus I adore Chanel flaps and for the price they are going to need to be leather

Exactly, everyone has to draw the line somewhere. I would like to inoffensively ask true vegans how do they live? I can only say I am impressed, it is very difficult to be purist!

+1 (except for the dislike for deer lol)

Long time veggie here too and also wear leather bags, belts and shoes, but no exotics or furs.

I'm also a vegetarian who wear leather. No fur or exotics.
I started out eating vegetarian because of the environment, as the meat industry pollutes like crazy. Then also because I like animals. In regards to being a hypocrite, I really would rather be a hypocrite and not eat animals than being nonhypocritical and eat animals.

Your last sentence is very nicely expressed!

I know this thread was started years ago, but I just want to say I am greatful to the OP for starting it. While I never would have judged a vegetarian for wearing leather it is definitely something that seemed hypocritical to me. However reading the perspectives here has really helped me see how it is usually not hypocritical at all.

For one thing, there is a *huge* difference between being vegetarian because you think it is a good thing to avoid eating animals and believing that it is actually immoral to eat meat because an animal was killed for human use.

It is also true that there can be nuances to their belief where they are OK using parts of animals that were killed for human use so long as the animal wasn't primarily killed so that we could use that item.

What would really be hypocritical would be someone who believes it is immoral to use any part of an animal killed for human use buying and using leather. But that is very different from saying vegetarians are hypocritical for wearing leather. So thanks to the OP and all who contributed for helping me understand!

Oh, and just for the record, In case anyone does fall into the category of people I just called hypocritical, I am the first to admit I am hypocritical myself at times. For example, I think actually lying is wrong, even if it's a small lie for a good cause, but being honest I have done so in the past and know I will still do it again in the future. Just because you believe something is immoral does not make it easy to live up to you code of morality. So please understand I am not judging. After all, people in glass houses should not throw stones.

Very good point. I always find it hilarious (pathetic) when people screech at others while holding wholely indefensible positions themselves. PA is well within her rights to do as she pleases. But she cannot credibly drip acidic judgment on me for wearing fur when she wears leather.
