There are threads re TRR and authenticity somewhere here. I will rummage around to find some. i don’t recall all of the details, but I would personally not buy a bag from TRR.

I used to buy bags from fashionphile, yoogis closet and Ann’s fabulous finds. having read some threads re fashionphile, it certainly seems like caveat emptor and certainly not via their reserve program.

I also had fantastic luck with deals from Japanese resellers when no one seemed to be buying during cobvid (taking into account customs, carriage, state sales tax, and the cost of refurbishing/reconditioning, etc. But, it requires a lot of time, effort and work to get what you want, and with rising prices, I’m not sure it’s just8fied. (I got 30Bs in barenia, swift and 28K box bags for average price 7K usd, so I was fine with to pay extra fees on top
Holy moly those are insanely good prices! I'm not sure I'd go to the hassle... maybe one day but at the moment I think I prefer an easier route! I search AFF and Yoogis too but rarely does something I want show up. I never search TRR online but have met a specific SA in the local shop who's looking for a bag for me so it's a little different.

I have the main Fashionphile thread (and just saw your post about the reserve issue on the Kelly issue thread) but have never seen a TRR thread... if you find it could you link or send it to me pls? Also in this case, I would see the bag in person (vs buying sight unseen) so wondering if that would that change your feeling re. authenticity?

Are you capable of authenticating? This is a hard yes/no situation, not a maybe sorta mostly. If not, then in person gives you no advantage. You might rule out an obvious fake but rule in a less obvious fake. Authentication from the best is a necessity, along with a return policy you can live with.

I agree with @jellyv re in person not being an advantage unless you are an authentication expert yourself. And +1000 authentication (prior to purchase) and returns.

i would assume you might have more protection with a TRR listing and an @bababebi or TPF authentication prior to purchase. With super fakes nowadays, IDK?

@peonies13, here is a post I read re TRR and authenticity, see post #48

there are probably others on this forum

also, pls don’t forget, there are plenty of preloved swift Birkins esp in size 35, and don’t limit yourself to only one reseller

I bought a Garden Party 36 on Realreal where the description failed to mention some damage. Customer service said they would either refund 10% of the purchase price so I could have it fixed, or they would take the bag back for a full refund. I asked for a supervisor and got a much better result. She said they would wait the 6-8 weeks I was told by my local Hermes it would take to get an estimate for repair and Realreal would refund the entire repair cost from my purchase amount. I made sure to get it in writing and the supervisor kept her word. The bag came back from the spa looking brand new and Realreal reimbursed the entire repair cost (which turned out to be less 20%).

@rita2129 Wow that's a great story - good to hear they made it right! Does sound like a hassle though, but glad it worked out.

@880 @jellyv I'm not an expert at all - I think I'd be pretty clear on an obvious or even a slightly less obvious fake, but a good fake would almost certainly get by me. Given TRR has no returns allowed (even for in-person purchases) I'm not sure I'll go for this bag... the boutique isn't exactly around the corner for me so it's probably not worth the drive into the city.

Ah really? I have seen very few - I've been looking for maybe 6mos for a barenia anything (ideally B or HAC) but swift is second on my wish list so I always keep a keen eye out for those. Maybe I'll just hold my horses and pass on this one.

To my initial question though, how would you authenticate something seen in person - do so after the purchase assuming the shop would allow returns? TRR's "no return" policy should be a deterrent in itself!

Prices are high now, but IMO, dip down after the holidays and in the middle of the summer months (Probably the covid discounts will not be repeated though). One major reseller, brand jfa has a nice variety of bags currently. @docride also has an ebay barenia Birkin (I am not affiliated with brand jfa or @docride except as a satisfied repeat custOmer). You can do a search on eBay for specific criteria.

it also occurred to me that you can go to discuss reseller thread and run a search for TRR

I’ve written above that i would never purchase without being sure of authenticity first, and never without the option of return. Given all the issues you have noted here, i have to say that I would personally feel safer with fashionphile. Authentication prior to purchase generally means via photos in a listing by a trusted authenticator. Not in person. When I purchase it’s through PayPal verified (with fees) and backed by my Amex, and not wire transfer. Of course, this is only my personal opinion and YMMV!

Good luck On finding your perfect bag

This is all extremely helpful - thank you! I think you're right, I would do better with a place that offers returns. I've always been skeptical of eBay but maybe I should give those two sellers a look. I've heard of both, but eBay just makes me nervous so I never considered seriously.

Re. TRR: yesterday I asked about how TRR handles authentications after purchasing (i.e. I said I would never consider purchasing if I couldn't get my own authentication post-purchase with the option to return) when they specifically do not honor returns on handbags. This was the SAs reply, now I don't know if she means "your account" like store credit, or if she means your account like your credit card, but it's useful info nonetheless:
"We stand by our authenticity process. So if you were to go to a third party and they tell you it’s not real we will accept the return, the full amount will go back to your account. Handbags are final sale but if it were to be inauthentic we will definitely refund you."

I've heard a lot of good things about Amex re. backing the user against purchases. Have you ever had to contest a purchase with them as inauthentic?

Hello,
Does anyone have any recommendations for purchasing vintage H scarves online?
I am looking specifically for the 2001 "Rencontre Oceane" in the green or light blue colorway, and am watching TRR and Ebay to see if any pop up, would appreciate any other reputable sites to watch for. Thanks!

For all of you reseller experts, can you please answer some questions I have. I have not bought anything from a reseller, boutique only, and I doubt I ever will because I’m too much of a chicken, but I’m fascinated and would like to educate myself a bit.

So, there is a gorgeous Bleu De Prusse Box B35 Guilloche HW on Fashionphile that has no year listed, but looks almost new (to me, you’re probably more practiced at looking at this) and plastic on the HW. It’s listed at $14,500, which seems really low. I would expect it to be higher for the special-ness and the HW. Or am I mistaken? Does this price set off your alarm bells? And why would Fashionphile not list the year?

It’s an unpopular size in an unpopular leather with dimpling and other age marks clearly visible. It may be “rare” in that there are few guilloche birkins on the market but rare doesn’t necessarily equate to popular or in demand. And you may feel 14.5k is low but it’s still likely close to double the retail of this bag when it was originally purchased. As for year, they show a pic of the stamp so if one can make out the code, one could determine the year. My personal opinion is that the bag is still overpriced (somewhat supported by the fact that it has yet to sell) and will probably sell for much closer to 10k, if FP ever decides to discount it.

The price doesnt set off my alarm bells

there is a discount for size 35; and both Box and BdP are specific tastes.

also, there is a surge in popularity for GHW, IDKW

most prospective buyers. If they want box, would like balck box, GHW, size 30 or below.

JMO only, right before Christmas is one of the worst times to purchase on the resale market. I found nearly all of my Covid deals in the dead of summer.

Thanks! That is really interesting. I missed the pic with the stamp, so that makes sense. I’ll go back and look at it again with your thoughts and perspective. There is so much knowledge here, it‘s fun to get some schoolin’. But I also want to be judicious asking questions so as not to help anyone who doesn’t need helping.;)

I actually purchased a Jige clutch from brand jfa this past summer that turned out to be fake. They initially refused the return but after providing photo proof I was able to successfully return for a refund through a PayPal case.
