So disappointed. Broken Birkin.

Hi Everyone,

So I purchased a raisin 35cm Birkin in chèvre from The Real Real. It arrived today. As I was just unwrapping it, one pontet fell off. I called immediately and the CSR was friendly enough and said that TRR would refund the cost of the repair or accept the return. I asked for a refund for part of the purchase price if I keep the bag, and am waiting to hear how much they are willing to refund. I've never had to repair one of my Hermes bags, and am not sure if I want to drive 2 hours to the nearest store and be without my Birkin for potentially a few months.

Would you accept the full refund, return the bag and buy a different one?
OR
accept some money back and take to the Hermes store?
OR
accept some money back and take to local handbag repair to reattach the pontet? It seems like a simple repair, but what do I know.

Have you heard of the pontet popping off so easily? II do like the bag.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Edited to comply with tPF rules. PT

So what did you do?

TRR has been crickets since my initial contact with them on the phone and then 2 email follow-ups. Will have to call them again on Monday. I don't want to say too much until I resolve it with them.

Don't want to beat a dead horse, but if you are considering keeping this bag, please get it authenticated first! TRR has listed fakes before - I don't believe that it is intentional, but I would never trust their authenticators.

I am not claiming that your bag is a fake, I simply wouldn't know. I would contact Bababebi through her website for peace of mind.

Going against all "never happens": my Birkin lost a foot. Literally. I stil don't have a clue how that even could happen, but it happened. I brought it to Hermès, they sent it to France, where they replaced it for free (and added a nice Spatreatmen for free, too)

That said I knew it couldn't be fake, so I felt quite comfortable walking in the store and telling" my B lost a foot". The SA didn't seem very surprised, they only discussed with me if all feet should be replaced or only that one.

If you are not pretty sure, that you Birkin is real, I would not go that route, as: a) you have the hussle 2.) the BIrkin will be gone a long period of time. As far as I remember, mine was gone for 6 months.

Return the bag and buy another one would be my advice.

I agree with this!

I need to speak to TRR tomorrow, but I can share that the bag is authentic via Bababebi. I'll share more tomorrow hopefully. Thanks everyone for your feedback.

From the little I saw it looked authentic. Honestly, if I were you and you know now it is authentic courtesy of bababebi, then see what TRR will do for you, and call Hermes and see what the cost and time of replacement will be. It is a rare bag, so it might be worth it.

Hi Everyone,

First of all, thank you for all of your replies! I understand why the overwhelming advice is to return the bag, however at the risk of being called crazy, I am sharing that I have decided to keep it and get it repaired. This was based on several things that unfolded: 1) I got the bag formally authenticated through Bababebi and informally by 2 former Hermes employees 2) the 3 people mentioned in #1 said that the bag was rare and recommended getting it repaired as I may not find one like it any time soon, and the defect was fixable 3) the bag is otherwise in excellent condition 4) the bag is my dream bag for various reasons and 5) TRR finally came through and offered generous compensation for the defect and hassle of getting it repaired. I don't want to post the details of the compensation. PM me if you are in a similar situation and I'd be happy to help as someone else helped me get to this point!

Hopefully I'll be posting photos of my baby soon once it's back from repair.

All the best to everyone here!
