You mis-understood. The H forum requires a link to a live auction or listing, it could be from other sites other than eBay. They won't authenticate closed listing or sold items or private sales. This is because there were many cases that turned out the persons who asked for authentication were sellers themselves.

Thank you for the explanation my dear.

Hi Megs - quick follow-up to this.

I asked:

Question 1. When you say "report it" do you mean with the Report button at the bottom of a post? Because that feature says something like "only use this for spammers or advertising" - are you saying we should be using it for ANY post that we want to get to the attention of the mods? If so then I think that language should be clarified.

You answered:

My responses in blue:

Yes, report a post. I believe the wording for the report button says spammers, advertising, or people breaking the rules. This would constitute breaking the rules. Please use the report button to alert us to a post that needs mods/admin attention with the report button. You can also PM me if needed.

I just used that "report" link (from the full-site version, not mobile) and this is the message it displays:

Note: This is ONLY to be used to report spam, advertising messages, and problematic (harassment, fighting, or rude) posts.

You may want to clarify that language, to make sure that members who have not been part of this particular discussion are aware of how you want the feature used. In the past, before reading this thread, I had clicked Report on a post, but then canceled out and didn't send it in because the issue I was concerned about didn't fit in those specific categories (and no I don't remember now what the issue was! :p).

Yes, let me tell Vlad to change that text so it can say something about 'alerting moderators to issues' or something like that. Thanks for letting me know!

Check out post No. 2848 in the "authenticate this" section of the LV forum. This is the kind of thing that worries me. People doing authentications for a speedy and pronouncing it fake because . . .

- one side is upside down!

If they don't know that - they definitely shouldn't be authenticating and sellers can be damaged because someone has no idea at all what they are talking about, but wants to appear as if they are an expert. There goes a potential sale, and a seller's potential reputation all in one swoop if someone comes on the forum and thinks this person has any idea about authenticity, also setting up the buyer for looking for "authentic" speedies that are right side up on both sides - and thereby looking at fakes as being authentic and vice versa.

I reported this as well, but the "report this" language is confusing as it doesn't really address this issue.

I think those posts have been deleted already. I did see it last night, and if I recall correctly, the person that posted it was the one asking for authentication. (She made multiple posts as she only attach one image per post.) She was worried that it was fake because of the upside down monogram. But I do agree, if you are unsure just post something along the line "I am uncertain of the authenticity of the bag, would appreciate opinions from a trusted authenticator." This way there is no chance that someone just browsing the thread can be misguided.

It actually wasn't the same person. This was someone else telling another person the speedy she posted for authentication was fake because it was upside down.

It was there this morning because I quoted her post, but they definitely were two different people.

The one person who said it was fake - named the other person by name and then said the speedy was fake. I quoted the person who pronounced it fake because it was upside down. She has a different name than the other person and was talking to the person asking for authentication in her post.

After quoting the "it's fake because it's upside down" from the second person, I told the person looking for authentication basically not to listen because Speedies are indeed upside down on one side and to wait for authentication. But I didn't see it until less than an hour ago.

If you don't know Speedies are upside down on one side, authenticating bags is definitely not something you should be doing.

It may have been removed at this point, but my post is still there - quoting the person who pronounced the bag fake, and my telling the first person to wait for authentication.

This actually disturbed me because if someone is really unfamiliar with LV, they could now go looking for a bag that is right side up on both sides (not to mention the poor seller).

Although the bag that person (mis)authenticated was posted by someone else, the person you quoted did request an authentication on another bag just hours before. That bag was listed on Tradesy and she made multiple posts with images.

Dear Truly Valued Authenticators,

I just joined the forum and this is my first post. However, I have read EVERY ATLV post from 2009 to present. I have also read many of the posts on this thread and all of the posts on the LV thread about who should authenticate.

Clearly you all are over-worked! In the LV thread there are dozens if not hundreds of requests in a day and only 4 qualified authenticators who have lives to live. 99.99% of the time, the requests are not in the proper format. The frustration is palatable and understandable.

That is why I decided not to post any requests for AT, despite my need and desire. Instead I went looking for a thread on recommended paid authentication services. I did not want add any more to your burden. I ended up here.

What occurs to me is that clearly the ATLV thread, and perhaps others if as busy, needs help, not necessarily with more "authenticators" but perhaps more administrative in nature. Such as reviewing a request and identifying whether it complies with all elements required for authentication and if not working with the requester to get the info needed. Then once the administrative member has got all the info they could somehow forward it on to the authenticators. That way the authenticators do not have to be worn down by the minutia of all the back and forth with the incomplete posts. I saw that one member on the ATLV was trying to do this and it seemed helpful. Sorry short term memory is not what it used to be so I cannot with confidence post her name but I think she may be on this thread. Lov-LV or something like that. Kudos to her for stepping up.

I am CLEARLY not qualified to authenticate. But I want to help. I spend a lot more time reading than posting and although I have lurked on a few threads, I have not been compelled to post until now. If you think it would be helpful, I could at least reply to those without seller links and get that and with more guidance perhaps get the pics you need.

Thank you for your time. My goal was to offer assistance, if I have only increased your stress level, my apologies. If I have been presumptive in my assistance, I apologize for that as well.

Karen

OK. My bad. I was scanning only and admittedly didn't look at the username that carefully.

I know. I am in awe of Addy/Ishcat/Lee and misbanff at ATLV (since that's where I am most at). I don't know how they keep up with the large volume of requests daily. Yes I have seen LVlvoe_bug posts informing requester of rules etc.

I wonder will it be helpful (authenticators please chime in) if we report post in the AT thread that doesn't conform to the rules. So for example in the ATLV thread, if someone make a request but doesn't provide links or if the links provide only blurry pics (or links does not provide most of the required pics) or if the person didn't follow the form of the request, then we will report it. This way an admin can delete the post thus saving authenticators time to click on the links. (or even typing a response)

Thoughts?

I would LOVE to have those types of posts deleted, but I don't think it would fly.

Just yesterday I answered posts who had proper pics, etc - then posted where I left off and if you had been skipped, it was because you had insufficient pics OR all your posts were requesting free authentications.

The problem becomes that not many people think it applies to THEM, as there were people I deliberately skipped bumping their posts after that. Most can't figure out what they did wrong, even though carefully reading the first page would probably help. They just don't take the time to do that.

As much as I enjoy authenticating, I just get SO tired of constantly having to hold peoples' hands and tell them what they are missing. So I skip them, and they bump themselves.

:true:

The constant bumping drives me totally :hysteric: especially when it's a post with a ton of photos that takes up a full page.

I just don't understand why it is so hard to read post 1 and follow the rules. I mean the requirement to read post 1 is on the title of the thread so you should have notice it and therefore you should read it if you have never read that post before. (SMH)

Maybe the first post can be edited to
READ THESE RULES BEFORE POSTING A REQUEST
to
READ THESE RULES BEFORE POSTING A REQUEST. ALL POSTS NOT FOLLOWING THE RULES WILL BE DELETED.

This way, at least, you put the responsibility somewhat back to the requester.

I mean I can understand a post with links and good pics but some pics are not perfect. Usually then the authenticators will say no red flags but need a closeup pic of "fill in blank".
