Tips or suggestions for cleaning diamonds

I rotate a professional Ultrasonic (a GemOro heated one) with a professional Steamer (JewelJet) and a spray called SparkleSparkle which I LOVE.

I clean my rings either daily or every other day whether they need them or not.

After cleaning I dip the corner of a napkin/paper towel in rubbing alcohol and run it over the diamonds, then dry it with a paper towel to remove any extra. It prevents spots.

I work in jewelery, and the rubbing alcohol is an excellent suggestion. It removes grease, which diamonds have a tendancy to attract. At home, I use warm soapy water with a little ammonia and a soft toothbrush. Rinse with cool water, and let air dry on lint free paper towel. Finish with rubbing alcohol once the ring has dried. Remember to clean the backs of your settings too. If you soak your jewelery for a few minutes and use the toothbrush, you should get it pretty clean. I do mine almost daily. I try not to use the ultrasonic cleaner too often because it vibrates.

This is how I clean my jewelry. I've tried a bunch of different cleaners & so far rubbing alcohol is the best:yes:

I'm looking for an easy way to clean my diamond jewelry at home. My pieces are all platinum and white gold. I've heard that steam machines and ultrasonic cleaners work well. What do you use?

There is some great discussions on this topic at Pricescope. It seems that many diamond lovers there swear by the ultrasonic home machine sold by The Sharper Image.

One thing that I do, very unconventional, is that I use the steam nossle on my coffee machine. I hold my rings in a glass of water and then lower the steam wand to aim at the rings.....it works really well for me.

I would love to eventually buy an ultrasonic machine as keeping your diamonds clean is part of the puzzle to having them look their best....and dazzle like crazy!

how often should you clean diamonds though? i think i've been over-cleaning it... :P

I have read on other sites that you cant over clean your diamonds. Some people seem to clean once a day in the ultrasonic machines with no ill effects.

Apparantly there is belief for those using an ordinary toothbrush, scratching of the setting is possible. So, it is advised that only a very soft baby toothbrush be used!

I use the ultrasonic cleaner and steamer at work. I wouldn't use the ultrasonic too often (more than once per week) because the vibrations can loosen your setting. They can be a bad idea if your diamonds are invisible set or pave set, as these settings are more likely to dislodge. (Also as an aside, many gemstones and pearls should not go in the ultrasonic as well.) At home I soak my studs in a mixture of mild soapy water with a little ammonia every other evening while in the shower and use a baby toothbrush to clean the setting. I finish off with rubbing alcohol to remove any remnants of oils on the diamonds. I then let them air dry on a paper towel. Studs have a tendancy to get very nasty looking quickly and body oils make the diamonds look less sparkly. My studs and baguette wedding band require the most cleaning to keep them pretty.

I use a jewelery cleaner that I got from the jewelers. You soak your pieces in the solution for a couple of minutes and rinse. I also get the things that I wear often cleaned at the jewelers every couple of months. It's free and they look really nice.

My collection is primarily platinum & white gold as well. I use jewlery cleaner - it soaks & you get the crevices with a brush, then polish with a jewelers cloth. It works fine. Those ultrasonic cleaners are not good for other types of more sensitive jewelry while may be great for diamonds. I would never put any of my tanzanite or other more sensitive stones in an ultrasonic.

I have used every one of the suggestions above and they all work great!
I have an ultrasonic cleaner and I use a little windex and water as the solution. A toothbrush and a little toothpaste also works wonders if you are tight for time.
I have heard that toothpaste can ultimately cause some abrasions on the gold or platinum.. so I guess if you do use that method, use your toothpaste sparingly.
I clean my diamonds at least twice a week. I love when they sparkle... can't stand it if they are dull! No, no!
