I asked my jewele the las time I was there what was best becauseI was going to buy the Hagerty's (sp?) and he said the best at home cleaner is palmolive dish detergent so that is what i use with a toothbrush. But, there is nothing like a good steaming like they do to make them really sparkle. I find that grease is the biggest culprit in making a stone look dirty.

Sorry for the bump.

I was thinking of getting an ultrasonic cleaner, but maybe I'll just stick with a toothbrush?

I bought an ultrasonic cleaner from a jewelry store and you know, it didn't get my rings as clean as a toothbrush and dish detergent. It seemed to just shake them around a lot. In fact it came with a packet of what looked like dish detergent. At the time I asked about sonic cleaners on another jewelry-lovers list and the consensus was don't bother with them. Someone said the ultrasonic cleaners that jewelers use are much more powerful than those one buys retail. I returned the ultrasonic and ever since I've used Dawn or Palmolive and a little periodontal toothbrush. My mom used to soak her rings in vinegar, water and a bit of detergent.

I own a steamer, and I use that once a week or so, esp to get under the stone on the band. But I do that after the Sparkle Sparkle spray or soaking, and before alcohol. I have a routine apparently.

Otherwise I clean it usually with this SparkleSparkle spray i get at nventa.com, buy it based on the metal, and the little brush that was in that connoisseur's red jar cleaner you can get at walgreens. I dumped the solution out, cleaned the jar, and kept the jar and brush and tray. If I don't use the Sparkle Sparkle spray, and have time for soaking, I mix up a capful of mr. clean in hot water (not boiling but REALLY hot) most of the way to the top of the jar, put my ring on the little tray and put it inside the jar and let it soak for a little while. Then I use the little brush after the water is cooler, to lightly scrub the ring, then I rinse REALLY well with warm water, spray with the SS spray and rinse and then dry really well with a paper towel and a blowdrier. (hold on tight!) If I am REALLY in a rush, I use 91% rubbing alcohol or windex on a paper towel or pointy qtip.

What I LIKE about the Sparkle SParkle spray (I use the Platinum one) is that it seems to get "skinbits" off the stones really well without having to brush the ring, and keeps stuff off longer somehow. Its not coating the stone but somehow that stuff helps keep em clean longer. It's the only glowing thing I can say about WF is that they turned me on to that. The one for gold helps keep rhodium on wg rings longer also.

I use a jewelry cleaner called Goddard's, it says that is ammonia free and safe for all precious metals and stones. It's a clear light blue liquid that comes in a 6 oz. plastic cup with an inner dipping basket and brush. I put it in the basket for a handful of seconds (it says to soak for 2 min. but I don't) and then use a soft toothbrush (the provided brush is too tame), a child's toothbrush is usually the right size, if you can pick up one with soft bristles from the drugstore. I rinse it off with water and then dry it on a paper towel. It gets my ring sparkling with very little effort.

I have an ultrasonic cleaner that I use maybe once a month... but for daily scrub down I use plain 'ol rubbing alcohol and a baby toothbrush to get underneath and in the crevices. Drop it the rubbing alcohol for a quick bath/soak while I shower, brush it up with the toothbrush and good to go!

Ame, I use connoisseur's the stuff in the red jar. You dump in out and just use the jar lol What's your opinion on it?

Bump!! I have been using the connoisseur's red jewelry cleaner for the sonic machine. I put a little in a cup and mix with hot water. I soak my white gold and platinum diamond rings for 2 to 3 minutes, use a soft bristled toothbrush to clean the stones and rinse under hot water for 1 to 2 minutes. I dry with the conoisseur's gold polishing cloth on the pink side of the cloth. My question is: this was always my method for cleaning my diamonds when they were set in yellow gold. Will this method harm the white gold rhodium plated part of my rings? I'm also concerned with brushing my rings with a soft toothbrush since they are partly white gold rhodium plated and I'm afraid of scratching them while I'm cleaning. It hasn't happened yet but I want to avoid it. Also the polishing cloth... Is it safe to use several times a week on white gold rhodium plated or will it take the plating off? My rings are new but I'm trying to avoid any problems as I have never owned anything but yellow gold rings before. Any info anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated! TIA!!!
