I used to use toothpaste, where did I get that from?
Sometimes I use the jewelry cleaner that comes free from some jewelers.
I tend to use plain old liquid hand soap and a toothbrush mostly....
I was wondering if this was bad for my jewelry (I'm talking about gold/platinum/diamonds)....
I never make it to the jeweler for him to steam clean...
How do you keep your bling blinging?:graucho:

sharper image ultrasonic jewelry cleaner for my diamonds. works like a charm!!! i use it about 2 times a day juat because i love the sparkle of clean diamonds.

Excellent topic! This is something I am very passionate about because there is no point in having nice jewelry if it isn't kept clean.

Steaming makes all the difference in the world with my gems.

I steam my jewelry at home with a Jewel Jet steam cleaner, and I love it! Uses tap water that I can leave in and does not rust inside the machine. Jewel Jet Jewelry Steam Cleaner - $89.95 on HSN.com. Worth every penny!! (and get a rebate through ******.com!)

I used to have a Jewelry Spa Jewelry Spa Jewelry Cleaner but you have to dump out the cleaning solution and distilled water after each use. Will rust if you don't - and mine did. If they could fix those problems, then it would be a really fine product.

As for cleaning, I use a blue solution and a little brush that someone sold to me in the mall in Las Vegas and it does a fine enough job, but I think I could get the same result from an water/ammonia blend. Windex is great!

I keep my silver in a non-tarnish jewelry box, and I occasionally rub it with a silver cloth. If I need serious tarnish removal, I have a paste from Haggerty that works really great. Haggerty is a common jewelry cleaner brand. I bought it at Linens & Things.

I am not a fan of ultrasonic cleaning as it can dislodge set jewels. Probably fine 99% of the time through. But I've been burned, so I use other methods.

I also use the sharper image cleaner but the last time I used it the cup you put the liquid in is leaking from the bottom. I did not have that much liquid in it either. So I think I need to look into that steamer.

silver: silver polishing cloth, sometimes a silver paste too, if its really bad.

gold: wipe it for link chains, for rings with stones, I dip in jewelry cleaner and rinse. I DON'T USE jewelry cleaner with any porous stones like OPAL or PEARL etc..

platinum: either use the solution and rinse, or I just use an old toothbrush, hot water and a bit of soap

white gold: same as gold or platinum

pearls: I have them restrung every year and they wipe them, but I just wear them. Pearls need to be checked and restrung...

I've been thinking about getting the steamer, but I'm concerned about it being too hot--Jewel Jet people--are you happy with it? I like that it just uses water...

For my rings, I use a simple jewelry cleaner that I got from Tiffany's as one of their VIP gifts.

For my silver jewelry, I tried dipping one of them in those jewelry cleaner liquids and it got tarnished so, now, I don't clean them unless the SA at Tiffany's offers to do so ;)

I'd run hot water through my jewellery (gold, diamond, gemstones) for a short while and then wipe them clean. Never never wear jewellery to bath!

For silver, I use the silver cleaning solution.

would love to get the ultrasonic cleaner. Have been eyeing for one for quite a while

I only use it on my diamonds, rubies and sapphires, and I love mine!! Never have had any problems with it. I add a little tap water, plug it in, clean & steam, then unplug and walk away. Soooooooo easy!

Here is the blurb from the HSN site. It's not recommended for any and all gems or jewelry:

<<Note of caution: Jewel Jet should NOT be used to clean soft, porous and/or heat-sensitive stones such as: emerald, tanzanite, garnets, perodot, pearl, coral, turquoise, opal, lapis and jewelry made with glue such as costume jewelry.>>

I tend to clean my wedding ring with toothpaste also. I know, that must be really bad, but I haven't had the time to go and buy jewelry cleaner. But, for my sterling silver, I use a cloth from Tiffany's that I got with my jewelry.
