Tiffany vs. Cartier- why do you favor one over the other?

Totally agree with you Leah, today its Cartier Vs Tiffany. Tomorrow it could be like you said Cartier Vs Graff.

Or Cartier Vs VCA :D

The reason I made this thread was because I noticed that some people on this site and in my personal life had a strong opinion about one or the other. I think, if given the option, most of us would choose Graff or Harry Winston, but there always seems to be an opinion about Tiffany and Cartier. I just wanted to see what everyone thought and put an end to the "age old question."

^^ I think its an interesting thread and you have every right to start it

Bitten, I could not choose between VCA and Cartier either I would feel like King Solomon

Definitely worth a discussion, so good thread

In keeping with the food analogy, my personal view on this is...Just like a healthy diet, you need a little bit from each group...so it is will a well- rounded jewelry collection.

I've even tried this logic with DH and have been semi-successful :D

V. wise Leah. And I do like quite a number of Tiffany designs and would like to own more. I just really, really don't like shopping there. Long live the Tiffany website though. :graucho:;)

I agree Sammyjoe, it's too hard to choose. Best to go with both! :p

*phew*

i concur! (^(oo)^)v

piggy was starting to hyperventilate!! imagine: Cartier baiser du dragon wishknot pendant? or VCA BoP ring?? quickly piggy! you have to choose! AHHHHHHHH NOOOOOOOO "\(*(oo)*)/"

je refuse, said the little piggy!

for me, the appeal of something can (though not always) lose it's luster when it loses the quality that made it so coveted in the first place. this goes with all things, not just jewelry.

when every 16 year old is walking around with "a piece from tiffany," the luxury ship has sailed. the term luxury isn't always about a price tag.

even with tiffany's history, i no longer feel the classic american air because it's basically sold out in the name of putting their name (literally) on so many random accessories.

You can't compare them!
They do not really operate in the same market.
Cartier is like the untouchable. For very rich people!
Tiffany's with some saving, everyone can afford.

So I am rather Cartier because actually, they are more inventive when it deals with design (they can afford getting the best deisgners working with them). Plus Cartier has a very large product range. So you can't talk about one style at Cartier's.

It's hard to compare the two. It all comes down to what designs you like btter and how much you are willing to pay for the "brand".

I am in my mid 20s and I find Tiffany more affordable and the designs fit my age more comparing to Cartier. But who knows about 20 years from now, my taste will change and I'll for sure make more by then. May be then I will be a Cartier girl.

Tiffany is known for its engagement rings-that's what they specialized-that is what I heard from SA. Only Tiffany has the 6 prong solitaire, Cartier and Debeers and other high end such as van cleef do not have the PATENT to have a diamond solitaire with 6 prongs. If you have a ring with 6 prong on the diamond-usually a round cut, then it is a 'copy cat' of tiffany's or a tiffany's. No high end stores will make such a ring. Personally 6 prongs is great, if one prong were to magically fall, there would still be 5 prongs holding onto the solitaire diamond-though the chances of that is small.

If you go to cartier/debeers/vancleef, you can't get a 6 prong onto the diamond solitaire-they only have the 4 prongs. A lot of people prefer the 4 prong b/c it makes the diamond look less busy. But I must admit, the 6 prong makes the diamond look much rounder and also bigger! 6 prong is a trademark of Tiffany's, or tiffany look alike.

Cartier is known for jewelry and watch, I believe. I would get a Cartier watch, but never a Tiffany watch, just my preference.

Can't complain with Tiffanys or Cartier, at this point. People if you are debating between these two mountains, you have arrived, or you've always been there!

Whatever you choose for youself, that's the most important. As long as it makes you happy!

PS-please correct me re: the above, I'm always eager to enlighten myself.

I like the designs better at Tiffany's because they are classically American. Obviously I am biased because I'm American so I've been socialized to like American things but when you compare the designs of the two companies you can see the difference in styles. American style is more understated and classic in my opinion.
