Do diamonds shrink by a lot? Would I feel comfortable with a larger diamond after a while? The thing is, I have not only small hands (ring size 5) but also quite SHORT ones. I felt the 1.53 was a bit out of proportion...
You will get used to the size on your hand pretty quickly. So while it might seem huge and out of proportion to you now, in a few weeks it might feel "normal" and maybe in a year might be like "man. I could've gone bigger" lol

I did like it - but when I looked from the side I saw some colour in it. When looking at it from the top, everything was perfectly fine.

Well you're not going to be looking at it from the side 90% of the time and that's the way to really judge the color. I wish there was a way you could see it in natural lighting to get a feel for it outside of the lighting in their store to see what you think of the color. I hate for you to pay more than you need to for higher color if you don't have to.

I will definitely ask to see the stones right next to a window or outside (even if security personnel has to come with me :D)

I also don't want to pay more for a colour that I will not be able to appreciate.

Let's hope that I won't "suffer" from the shrinking effect too much! :D

lol! If you're in the US, I believe you can "upgrade" for up to 5 years as long as you spend 2x what you paid for this. So if you decide you want bigger, you can trade this one in later.

I think if they have windows to the outside they will probably let you near them. But unless you buy it, they won't let you go outside.

Unfortunately, I'm not in the US so this ring would be the final one. But then again, 1.46, 1.31 or even 1.17 carat is not small enough that I would ever be dissatisfied with it. What a luxury problem... I think all of these rings are on the bigger side, aren't they?

Well, if I can't go outside, I hope they let me near the windows. It's REALLY hard to choose something that you can't see in normal lighting. I don't care for their store lighting - after all, this is not where I am every day.

When I was at the store, the SA and security person let me go outside when the sunlight did not reach the window. Even if I wanted to, I wouldn't be able to get away with their camera shining on me and two of them sandwiched next to me, LOL. Yeh, you need to see the stones under natural light because the store is dark and the lights make the diamonds shine brighter.

Yep, if you have small and short fingers, 1.17 is a good size, especially for daily wear, and may provide enough finger coverage. A 1.3 would be big! You will see shrinkage effect though, but for me, the way to counter the effect of shrinkage is to wear a smaller diamond or stone when I want to be practical. After wearing the smaller stone for a few, I notice my diamond looks bigger, LOL. When I mean practical, I meant when I do a lot of paperwork and lifting other than cleaning. I cannot go bare finger so I have to wear something.

Hopefully I will be able to see the stone in natural lighting, too.

As for the size, I tried on a 1.17 and a 1.53 and the SA said that the 1.53 did not look good on me.

I guess (hope?) she was being honest since the 1.53 costs much more.

I just want to be happy with my ring and not regret the size afterwards.

You're like me in that I always look at a diamond from the side, mostly because my stone turns so I can see the side. If that is the case, then looking at the I may bother you and you will wish you had gone more colorless. You will like G or even H. For sure you will not see the warmth from the side of a G, but if you are very sensitive to color, then even a H may bother you.

I will definitely check the colour again and also think that it varies from stone to stone? Maybe one diamond shows more colour than another.

That's good to know since 1.5 is a higher carat mark, which price escalates exponentially. As we discussed before, best to go 1.49 then 1.5.

I don't think you should be able to see any differences among different stones of the same color grade. Now I'm talking about the side only unless it's the lighting or the diamond catches some colors from the surrounding, like your clothes.

Yes, indeed!

I do wonder, though, whether I should get a 1.31 or a 1.46, assuming that they are both well-cut (will enquire about the details).

The SA said 1.5 looked a bit unproportional and too much for everyday. Do you think she was being honest? Acutally it would be better for her to sell me the ring that is more expensive

Next time I will wear the I colour diamond alone - last time I wore the F on another finger and compared them side by side. Maybe this is why I noticed a bit of yellow in the body.

I would try on something in the middle (1.3 range) and the 1.53 again and see what you think. If this is final, don't settle, and get exactly what you want. You don't want to regret it later. If you are concerned you'll regret going so large, you don't want to get that to head some possibility off in the future of shrinkage. I wear a 1.15, my rings are sized to a 6 to fit my knuckles but my finger itself is about a 5.25 if that helps you gauge size. I feel like I could definitely go larger ;) I don't wear my rings much though, so that helps with shrinkage a great deal!

It is possible sometimes, there are high I's and low I's because as you go down in the scale, the range for what falls into that color range gets bigger.

Side by side you will notice the color between an F and an I. But without a higher color grade next to the I, it's less likely.
