Tiffany I colour diamonds?

Agree with Ame, and if you opt for 1.49 carats in VS2 and an I color, you get the bang for your bucks! On the other hand, if you opt for 1.5 carats and higher clarity, you WILL pay the premium. Rather going for VS1 or VS2 is really up to you. They will be eye clean because Tiffany selects eye clean stones. They even sell eye clean SI1, which is even more bang for your bucks. The key is to know your budget. Some people will not go lower than VS1, like Ame, while others cannot even look at less than VVS2. But with eye clean stones, you will not see the inclusions with your naked eyes.

But a VS2 from Tiffany's should be perfectly fine, shouldn't it?

Yes, of course, visual inspection before purchasing is always important. I know I can use the HCA tool for checking the proportions of the diamond, but I can only do this at home.

What if I fall in love with a stone that doesn't get an excellent HCA score? Does that mean that it is of a lower quality or shall I just let my eyes decide?

Yes, it does. I just wonder whether there will be any differences in cut? Does Tiffany cut all their diamonds to the same standards?

You can use your iPhone or Smartphone to check HCA while at the store. That's what I did to rule out stones at the store. Make sure you ask the SA to check the database, all the numbers are there except the plot map, which you will only get when you receive the actual diamond report.

Your eyes need to be the decision maker. Note the score and the report but let your eyes make the decision. Some people don't love an "ideal on paper" stone. The HCA is just one tool to help people weed out duds. Some stones that have fallen outside of the HCA range have been quite nice, and some stones that fall within the range have been duds. It's not the grand decider and a good score is not a certainty of a true ideal performer either.

If you have a smartphone the website should work for the hca.

There will be definite variances in cut since they don't cut their diamonds, they source them, and they are not all to the same cut standards and ranges. You absolutely HAVE to get the reports to get the angles etc. unless you opt to select with just your eyes and be happy with that. They do sell dogs, just because it's got their name stamped on the ring does NOT make it ideal or excellent cut. The angles and proportions are what make determine a stone's make, i.e. what determine if a stone is ideal/excellent cut.

In terms of eye cleanliness, yes. But you should definitely see it first and make sure it fits YOUR definition of eye clean.

That's good to know! I will definitely check the score but try to let my eyes decide.

Well, to be honest, I don't even have a definition of eye clean. What shall I look out for when purchasing the ring?

My definition of eye clean is "can I see anything in this stone (any inclusions at all) without a loupe, in any lighting condition, from any angle, from any distance". IF I can see it without a loupe, it's not eye clean.

Ok, that makes sense. I will check, of course, but have you ever heard of Tiffany's selling non-eye clean diamonds?

On a few very rare occasions yes. But since everyone's definition of eye clean varies, it is more often because some people have better vision for that stuff than others. Not all VS2s are 'eye clean' but the highest majority percentage are.

I think you should see them all in person, see the reports and pick the one you like the best in person. Side by side, the size will be a little different, but you need to pick based on how the performance is to your eyes.

Yes, there's no doubt that I should do that.

Just based on the numbers: do you think the size difference is big enough to justify the extra $$?

Whether it's 1.31, 1.39, or 1.46, I honestly wouldn't be able to tell the difference on my finger unless I wear them all at the same time, side by side, and they are about the same cut. Inspect all three under different lighting, especially next to the window.

Yes, I will surely do that.

Well, of course, no one wears three solitaire rings all the time :D But the difference in price is really big... MAYBE it would be worth it to go for the 1.31 I colour.
