Mmmm,My diamond is an old cut,it breaks ALL the rules of perfect proportion, but it still beats the pants off 95% of modern round brills for fire and sparkle!!!!!!!!
Its that indefinable 'something' that makes your heart sing, thats the only voice you should listen to!!xxxxxxxxx

Oh,and its an I color, but it still sings like a rock star!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for your opinions, and for what it's worth, the actual "cut" on this diamond is "very good".....again, not sure that matters!? :shrugs: I'm not sure what the pavillion angle or crown angle is....should I find that out, or not really?

Thanks again for your help!

cut is considered most important because if the cut isn't proportioned, it just won't sparkle. The depth can't be too deep nor too shallow, same w/ the crown. . .
for example, 2 different 3 carat diamands could look very different in size if the 1st one is really deep w/ a small table and overall diameter, the 2nd one may look bigger than other 3 carats if they cut it shallow and make the table and diameter very large. . . neither will have much scintillation however as they need to be in between, not too deep, but not too shallow.

LMK if this picture shows up, it's a diagram of what I posted before w/ the #'s I mentioned as being a good loose guideline.

An excellent cut resulting in a diamond with excellent symmetry will deliver lots of light return and make lower colored diamonds such as I's, J's, and even K's look almost as white as G and upwards (and will also make it appear larger).

A J stone with only a "Good" cut won't perform as well as it would if it had a better cut, BUT (and this is a big "but")...... I strongly believe that all that matters in the end is how the stone makes YOU feel. If it's gorgeous to you and works well within your budget, go for it! I have both an Ideal cut H and a Good cut E and both sparkle like mad. They look almost equally white as well.

In the Pricescope world, it's called, "eye clean versus mind-clean." If the stone looks beautiful to your eyes and that is more important to you than the technicalities/specifics that you know in your mind, then you should simply trust your eyes.

Oh, and I third the suggestion to check out Pricescope! LOTS of "cut nuts" there but many of them are also able to strike a balance between using the numbers/angles to judge a diamond AND just trusting their eyes/hearts as well.

Wow....this is a really good thread & informative...and at the same time, NOT TOO CONFUSING for diamond illiterate people like me! thanks girls!

Btw...I just thought I'ld respond to the OP...J is maybe a little low and yellow in color but I actually don't like D-E color diamonds either because its looks like glass to me. (IMO anyways) good luck deciding.
if the diamond makes ya happy, go for it!

I second going to pricescope.com, especially if you are going for a 4carat diamond. The truth is, paper is going to matter. If you compare two diamonds side by side, one with a good cut and the other with a very good or excellent cut (assume same clarity and colour), the diamond with the better cut will make your heart sing a lot louder than the good cut. The cost of the diamond is largely dependent on the colour and clarity and a little on the cut. So why don't you look for a diamond with a very good or excellent rating in terms of proportion, symmetry and cut.

If you have not done any comparison side by side and in normal lighting, the likelihood is that any diamond of that size coupled with the store lighting will make it look better than it really is.

OP, someone were already responded to your question. there so, I just express my opinion about purchasing of a big diamond.

1. clarity is a must considerated for large stone. Why? the bigger the better see conclusions in naked eye.

2. the important beside its clarity is color. With lower color on big stone that will reflect much more. For instance, I color range shows more yellow right there at spot on white gold or platinum ring.

3. very good or excellent cut of the stone (included polish, table, symmetric, etc.), which helps add up sparkling into it.

Although, whatever you decide to get, congratulations!

I have done a little comparison shopping. I was able to take this diamond into natural light and it SPARKLED like crazy. I currently have a 3ct VS2 G color and side by side the 4ct looked whiter, shinier and sparkled more than mine.....just gets so confusing! ;P

^then I think you have your answer!
If it looks as good as or better then that's good enough! :D

Swanky,

You're so cute, I love your responses (not just my thread...;P). The funny thing is we weren't even looking for a new diamond, just a setting. We walked into a store (privately owned) fell in LOVE with a setting that the owner had made, then he plopped the 4ct into the setting and it was just WOW!!! So now we're trying to decide if we want the whole ring (diamond included) or just the setting with my diamond in it. Even dh noticed the "improvement" of the 4ct compared to my 3ct....always makes it easier when they notice it too!

Thank you for your help/input and knowledge.....

Hi luv my bags, have you compared it with another diamond, even if it is smaller, that is of a very good or excellent cut? I don't mind the JVS1, the colour-clarity combination is a personal choice, a decision based on preference or budget. But a Good symmetry and Good proportion is something that I will avoid for a round brilliant stone. Bear in mind that GIA issues symmetry and proportion ratings on Fair, Good, Very Good and Excellent, Good is just a little better than Fair and take note that they don't issue Poor grades, so "Good" is not that great.

But it is your choice at the end of the day. A 4ct stone is still a sizeable purchase and you might want to shop around more and do more comparison.

aww Michele!:shame:
We're actually shopping for a new upgraded stone and DH is very picky and excited about it too, makes it a WHOLE lot more fun and meaningful when the DH is equally as interested!

simplysplendid: Thank you for your thoughts....nothing is being bought right now. Like I said I put it next to my own personal 3ct (which I was/am happy with) and the 4ct was a "better looking" diamond (maybe not on paper but in person), FWIW! =)

I totally agree to get the diamond that sings to you!!

I was at the Jeweller's the other day just nosing around, and was shown 2 triple Excellent Diamonds (i.e. Excellent in Cut, Colour and Symmetry) of the EXACT Carat weight except one was an EVS1 and the other an FVS2.

The Jeweller asked my DH and I to pick the one that was more sparkly and I chose the FVS2! :p:sweatdrop:
The DH was equally lousy...He couldn't differentiate the 2 at all!

That being said, I have a 1.5Ct Diamond that I bought for myself and has been nothing but proud of its "Bling" for years. I was recently given a Ring that looked as if it had a larger carat weight but was so dull I didn't even think it was a diamond initially! (It was a gift so I felt it was rude to ask....:push:)
It turned out to be a diamond that was ALSO 1.5Carat but cut to look larger than it really is. Even after a good polish, it didn't even sparkle as well as the two 0.2Cts the jeweller randomly chose for me by its side when I reset it.

Since I am always on a budget, and 4 Cts is by no means a small sum of money, I'd suggest doing some comparison too (Unless you already KNOW you love it of course! ;)).
Afterall, you won't be able to detect the Clarity with the naked eye too, so you can always trade down the VS1 clarity to obtain a better colour. Similarly, you can also get a slightly smaller diamond, maybe 4.03 or 4.04 but with a better symmetery so the facets in the diamond reflects light better and it sparkles more, but no one can tell the difference of the carat weight visually... :graucho:

Of course it is not like you will be carrying your diamond around only to compare it with other diamonds, but when you do sit down for coffee with your girlfriends and they "Oooh and Ahhh..." over your Headlights of a ring, wouldn't it be kinda nice if there is no probability for one of them to ask you..."Hey, is it the lights or does your rock look kinda yellow when compared to mine?"

Especially since 4 Cts has a larger surface area....

Just my $0.02.

Swanky, How fun to be upgrading your diamond. We did that a couple of years ago and it just gets SO confusing. Obviously what the paper says "matters", but we realized after looking at TONS of diamonds that what they LOOK like matters more (to us). We saw 2.5cts that were great on paper, and only looked OK. But then compared to a 2.5 that wasn't as great on paper it looked awesome.....gets overwhelming and confusing. My friend just got a 2ct VS1, F color, excellent cut and my 3ct VS2, G color, very good cut looks better. Guess everybodys eye sees something different...that's the only way I can explain it! ;)
