i didnt read through the other responses, so if someone has already said this, then im sorry...:shrugs:

but, i tend to say the french names with a french accent, and the more english names without a french accent.

Reporter gm = ree port err gee em...reporter isnt a french word

L'extravagant = l'exx trah vah gont (with french accent).

I think it just depends!

I'm relieved to see this thread! I'm so new to LV! I purchased my first bag gently used online so didn't have to pronounce anything correctly. My next bag I ordered brand new by phone but fortunately had the sweetest SA who put me at ease! I ordered a damier speedy 30 and had to be taught how to say damier correctly. I then proceeded to ask how to say several other words including noe and batignolles. Thank goodness for the kind SAs!

Haha I totally know what you mean. I am kinda learning how to pronouce some of the bags, but I am still not very good. Like John, I pronounce cles "Kles" and not "clay". I can't wait to get my BH in a couple weeks. I will probably go in asking for the "bat-igg-ga-nold-ad-ie-es" or something stupid like that that doesnt even make sense. Haha oh well, hopefully they will think its funny. :roflmfao:

a little off topic but funny enough, sometimes I find that not all the SAs at LV even know the names of all the pieces. when I picked up my pomme cles, I told one of the SA's "I'm here to pick up the pomme cles (clay) you are holding for me" and the SA looked at me cross-eyed. I then said, "you know, the "key holder, change purse?" and she said, "oh! okay!"

^^^Yes!! So funny. I was on the phone with an SA at the 866 number, and I asked for the "key holder" (which is how it was listed on the web site) and she said "You want a key chain?" and I said "to lengthen the strap on a pochette" and she said "OH! You want an extender!" Well yes, I do, but you actually call it that too?

So then I told her "with my Texas accent I'll probably say this all wrong, but do you (the SA) pronounce 'WAP-i-tee' or 'WOP-i-tee'?" She said "Well, I call it it the wapity" and pronounced it WOP-i-tee. I was like, okay, I can do this.

You probably had to be there but it was pretty cute.

So how did they tell you to say damier, curiously, and how is Azur been pronounced? I've heard it several different ways by different SAs.

Isn't Dentelle pronunced "dahn-tell"? :confused1: That's how I would say it.

I agree. I speak French and it's "dahn-teL" (stress on 2nd syllable)

As for the other word, "multicolore" IS a WORD in French and it SHOULD have an "accent aigu" on the E such that it becomes "multicoloré" because it's an adjective for "monogram". Here's how you prnounce it:

"muL-tee-coh-loh-Ray" in European French or
"muL-tsee-coh-loh-Ray" in Canadian French
Note: R for a uvular sound; L for a very "fronted" (or I think it's called dark...) lateral sound so it's NOT like "mule" where the L is pronounced further back in the mouth. Both types of French have primary stress on "tee/tsee" and secondary stress on "Ray"

but then again, you will NOT hear the accent being pronounced because LV is anglocising the word without the accent.... meh... Just wanted to point out the origin of that word.

Also, I don't get why people feel embarrassed for pronouncing something in another language... When I can't pronounce something, I just totally "anglo-franco-size" the word, I don't htink there should be any embarrasement cuz it's not your native tongue, so not your fault....:shrugs:

I am 100% sure that it should be dahn-tell, not all SAs can pronunce everything correctly.

Regarding Noe, the bag's name is actually Noé, so it'd be pronunced "No-ay"

Where's that pronuniciation thread? There are a lot more there.

I agree again.

it's no-ay. Eg. In English when you pronounce the name Chloe you say "kloh-ee" (stress on 1st syllable), but in French it's really Chloé which is then pronounced as "kloh-ay" (stress on 2nd syllable)

However, WARNING: DO NOT RELY ON THE PREVIOUS PRONUNCIATION THREAD!!! about 1/2 of those so called "correct" pronunciations are WRONG, despite their creativity........

gosh, i just describe the bag as best as i could and usually my SA will understand which one i am talking about. But i do have to agree it's kinda 'upfront' when SA correct the pronunciation right away..."huh? you mean the XXXXX?" And there was an old but super benefitcial thread about how to pronunce majority of LV bags.

Once I wanted to see a Damier wallet. When the SA approached I asked to see the wallet but paused at the word, "Damier" because I didn't want to say it wrong and look stupid. The SA saved me and said, "You mean, the checkerboard?" I thought it was so funny.

i took French in middle school and high school... up to 2nd semester college level, but never pursued it after that. it's been quite a few years since i've used it, so i'm obviously not fluent. i can guess most names correctly, but there are others that i'm not sure of... meh, i just try to pronounce it the best i could or simply point to what i'd like to see... lol
