Teenagers and younger girls with designer handbags

Things have definitely changed since I was younger. No one I knew even got their nails done (I still don't). No one colored their hair unless they were going gray or decided to buy Sun In to go blonde. I never would have bought a designer bag because my babysitting money would not have covered it. I am currently limited by my monthly allotment as to what I can afford.

I don't have a problem with the younger set having nice things in and of itself. I think it depends on the situation though. I have always had a problem with buying teenagers brand new luxury cars though.

This is very true. And perhaps we're always slightly harder on the perceived excesses of the younger generation. My parents always remind me too how they didn't have <fill in the blank> when they were my age, and I, in turn, make the same observation with my own children!

No, a laptop is useful, a macbook is for show

a purse is useful, a designer handbag is for show.

same principles are at play here.

I agree. Most people who have MacBooks aren't media editors. Most get them because they are fashionable, trendy and are in style. Nothing wrong with that. Same with designer bags or clothes, it's mainly for show IMO. Again nothing wrong with that.

To the OP I have no issues with young girls carrying designer bags.

It doesn't matter to me what people buy for their kids, as long as they teach them values at the same time. I just think it's terribly impractical to use designer bags to carry books in, for middle school and high school-when I was in high school, I attended one that was one of the top in the nation, and man the books were heavy. For fear of forgetting to bring the texts home if I have an assignment, I brought everything around with me, and my (two) book-bags were 30-40lb+!

Also, although it was an affluent neighborhood that I lived in, it's so academically competitive there, that most people don't have energy to judge what other people are carrying in their arms; with that, I didn't own a designer bag, or buy any clothes of my own, all the way until I was in college. 'Twas high time to do so, I think!

I think there used to be a thread in the "bags showcase forum" and the thread was started by a younger girl. She was 15 or 16 at that time. She had a collection of Hermes Birkin bags that was pretty surprising for that age. She used those bags for school, carried books and etc.

I was like - whoooooooooooa! :D

I disagree... Not sure about others, but I purchased my MacBook because I don't want to deal with the viruses on Windows. I don't do editing, or any designing, or anything like that, I simply type documents and have them shared on my iCloud devices like iPad and iPhone... Windows doesn't offer that, they offer plenty of viruses and other bs instead.

Now I kind of feel weird the need to justify my preference to MacBooks since I'm not a creative professional. The same as I feel weird the need to justify my love for Hermes or Chanel...

Macs also have viruses as well, they are not as virus free as they once were. I don't think you need to justify why you like or purchase any brands that you have. People will always have their own opinions on everything. When I purchase certain things my mother tells me that I'm doing it for XY reason, do I care? Nope.

We will have to agree to disagree on why most buy Macs :smile1:.

Oh, nooooooooooooo way. I work in graphic design and there is absolutely no comparison. My Macbook is completely for function, not show. I've used both windows PC and Mac, and each has its functions. I am sure there are people who own Macbooks just to be trendy, but there are those of use who need them for a purpose. I get what you are saying about a generic purse vs. a designer bag, but PC vs. Macbook is the wrong analogy to use.

so true about the mac! A mac is not just for show - it has superior functions in so many ways.:smile1:
Very happy to see young girls carrying expensive bags - though to be honest most of them look ridiculous and they cannot carry them off well. They may think they do but it takes more than daddy's money to look good with a CHANEL or an Hermes.

I'm not justifying my purchases, haven't done it in decades. It's just weird to read on this forum that its ok to own Mac if you're in editing, otherwise it's a "show off".
The parallel is obvious. If a laptop is a contemporary brand and MacBook is a luxury brand, does it mean that people buy luxury brands to show off? Should it depend of profession, the whole "MacBook for editing" idea? Like its ok to own Hermes if you work in fashion and not ok if you're a doctor or something like this.

Sorry, I thought Birkins are heavy without anything in it :p, and with it being a hand-held bag, she would either not have much textbooks to carry, or would have developed some serious weight-lifting muscles by now! :graucho:

Also, as someone who looks way younger than her age, why is someone's apparent age so important in determining "worthiness" of owning designer goods?

Excellent point. I have work at a university and have a tendency to make snap judgements when I see 18-20 year olds having crazy-expensive stuff. But then I realized, I'm nearly 30 and still get carded every. single. time. So when people see me carrying an expensive bag or driving an expensive car, they probably assume my daddy bought it for me. They have no way of knowing I paid for all those things myself.

I know that when I was younger, I always felt like I was of lesser value when all the "cool" girls had the in style things of the moment. Now when I see younger girls with these designer bags, I don't feel of lesser value...I just feel like "Oooh, I want that one!"

I don't get it why ppl really bother about the designer bag. after all it is their own money. and if the parents buy it for them we know that the parents most probably are wealthy. and also I think sometimes to fit in a group you need to do some changes right? what if everyone at school carrying rather expensive bag and you are the only one who don't? maybe your friends won't judge you (or some will) but you will feel that you are left out by your friends, won't you? and maybe (in my country for that case) most of the teens who carry designer handbags are carrying fake designer handbags, so why bother? most probably the reason is not to show off (since everyone knows that the bag is fake) but what if they are just that stylish? i mean, hello? a teen is the age in which you really love to dress up!! ;)

Umm you specifically said "Now I kind of feel weird the need to justify my preference to MacBooks since I'm not a creative professional".

Macbooks are a luxury brand/item and in many cases people purchase luxury products to show off. Not always but many times this very well is the case. It is what it is.

Not my issue or business, but I wouldn't allow my daughter to carry designer unless borrowing mine or earning the money and buying herself.

The issue of entitlement and one upsmanship is a topic I raised in the money forum because my ds13 wants an expensive (to me) laptop. I worry that it will just lead to him wanting more and more expensive things. Not to mention I can't afford to pay for it and he is expecting me to fork over a bunch of cash. The expecting and immediate gratification attitude are not something I want to foster.

When young, my mother used to tell me, and I value this statement more now because of what it taught me, "I will always make sure you have what you need, but you will never have all you want. You need to work toward things." She was direct in her beliefs that earning high end items is a right of passage one works for, not an entitlement.

So back from my topic side trip.
