Suggestion of where to store Jewelry at home, a safe?

A bit off topic but if you’re worried about being robbed, I would not post all your nice bling photos on a public forum. I read a person had her Chanel collection stolen and the robbers knew her stuff from her posts. Freaky but I guess it happens... like a mini version of Kim Kardashian and how she got robbed.

Anyway, just my two cents. I used to post bling photos but not anymore. Paranoid? Maybe. But I’d rather be safe than sorry. Anyone can find anyone these days if you really tried.

Something to think about.

Question for TPFers with large jewelry collections (or any other smaller items to store):

I need to upgrade my safe at home because I've run out of room!

Do you have any recommendations for the most secure types or things to avoid?

I would prefer a digital one that also comes with a key, as finger print scanners don't work reliably on me and I've heard combination locks can be broken into with a listening device. Would also like some amount of fire protection.

I've also heard safe deposit boxes are becoming less safe and where I live currently I don't have a bank I trust as they open/close branches frequently here.

Could you post your suggestions for how to store your valuables (without giving the thieves any tips I guess!)? Feel free to private message me, too.

If there's another thread on this already please share!

Thanks and happy new year!

You might think I’m crazy, but I carry my jewellery with me in a travel pouch. I don’t trust people, and I’d rather not leave it at home. Sooner or later, I would like to have a safe installed, not just for my jewellery, but for important paperwork too. Until then, it’s with me wherever I go.

Combination of safe and insurance is what gives me peace of mind. I still end up leaving some stuff lying around, usually what I wear/rotate on a daily basis but the pieces I don't wear all the time are in the safe and the more valuable pieces are insured individually.

If I had a safe installed at home I wouldn’t put it in an obvious place. It’s one thing if your home is burgled when you’re out, it’s another when you’re faced with a home invasion robbery. It’s been happening in certain cities here and I think having a safe at home makes it more dangerous because you’re highlighting where your valuables are. Can you imagine being forced to open your safe at gunpoint?

On the other hand, you can’t have nothing for the burglars to steal. One woman was beat up in a home invasion robbery because she *only* had $5k cash at home. The burglar told her other homes he broke into had $10k+ and thought she was lying.

I think I’ll put the jewelry box in a bookshelf as if it were a book

That reminds me... they have boxes that look like books by this company called Punch Studio... I usually find them at Marshall’s or TJ Maxx but they have them online too in dozens of colors and themes. (Maybe not for jewelry, since some people know they’re fake, but cute for hiding/organizing stuff on shelves.) Maybe hide the jewelry in a hidden compartment you can carve out in an old piece of furniture, like a chair? Hmm...

I have a huge safe that I keep passports, jewelry and important paperwork in. Then I bought an IKEA closet with a mirror to go in it. That way it does not look like a safe and it is easily accessible. I wanted to leave it in the basement but know I would never go there just to switch jewels of the day.

I have a friend who’s father owns a safe/vault moving/Install company (as you can imagine, they need very special equipment for this)
I asked him to help me pick a safe. I didn’t need a huge one, so I was looking at some that were around 500-600lbs.
He told me not to bother with these as someone can just take it and run :wtf: (He’s a BIG guy yes)
I asked about bolting down and he said they will come in with a tool and still take it and run.
His recommendation was something with some real heft/weight to it and if you can, have it set into the foundation.

I usually keep only those jewelry pieces with me that I wear on regular basis. Rest all I keep in bank. Reason is simple: Safety (for me and the jewelry both). The diamond ring and gold chain that I regularly wear I keep in closet (at a specific location that is hidden). Can't be careless.
The challenge I have is if I want to wear the different pieces of jewelry and have to go to the bank and get it.

Folks are going to have differing opinions here - but we have several VERY heavy (600+lb) Liberty safes behind locked doors with manual combinations (vs digital - think old school locker combinations). We also have the house outfitted with Nest cameras throughout (indoor and outdoor) which are on and recording whenever we leave the house for more than 5 minutes. We live in a very safe, gated community with zero record of break-ins/robberies - but better safe than sorry. I also have insurance on all jewelry over a certain dollar value. All personal records (birth certificates, soc security cards, passports, tax returns, etc) are in the safes along with jewelry, guns, etc. We also have an alarm system and a VERY large, intimidating dog.

But really the safes are the main thing. There's a VERY large difference among home safes. I'd personally look for something that's well over 500lbs. It's very difficult for one person to steal a safe of that size - it weighs even more when loaded down with various supplies/valuables. Two people could manage but how long are they in your home before you're aware they're there? This were the Nest is a secondary system. We can see if someone enters our home and immediately contact police as the Nest notifies us real-time. We also have them on video record as evidence.

So a burglar has to break in to our house, get past our 100lbs dog who DOESN'T like strangers, disable or ignore the alarm, then break into a separately locked room and remove a 650+lb safe all before we - via our Nest - and neighbors notice they're there and contact authorities. We'll also have their vehicle on camera from the outdoor Nest.

Moral of the story - don't break in to our house. And if it somehow works out, our stuff is insured.
