Wow,, how did they disable the alarm and cameras? Alarms have backup batteries and electrical boxes have locks.

I don’t know the technical details; they had a lot of practice and knowledge since they were burglars entirely for a living. I think burglaries that sophisticated are somewhat rare, but it’s still best to have insurance and not rely solely on safes and alarms. The 2015 Hatton Garden safe deposit robbery happened even though the robbers did not fully disable the alarm, but the security guard just didn’t bother to go inside and police didn’t come. They planned, timed it right and had insider knowledge, and some theories even suggest it was an inside job. Basically— anything can happen!! My family, and many family friends, have unfortunately had so many bad experiences to believe that a safe/alarm could ever be 100% foolproof. Insurance insurance insurance and don’t put all your eggs in one basket

Thanks, I think it’s still best to put in a safe deposit box. Especially going out of town. These horrible stories are scary.

I’d say the bank normally, but about two weeks ago I read an article about how a man lost his valuables, due to the bank getting rid of the wrong box. So I think a safe that is fireproof, bolted down to a wall.

We have 3 gun safes in unexpected places, bolted down & built in. They are not visible either. To get to ours, they would have to tear the house down. If we go out of town, our son housesits because we have security dogs that will only tolerate a selective few. Along with security cameras & alarm..

Another vote against a safe deposit box. Mine was declared abandoned, paperwork and tech backups destroyed and valuables turned over to unclaimed property at the state because of a clerical error. I will NEVER use one again.

It sucks to have this happen, especially when it’s the banks error, and the items are irreplaceable. I’m sorry about your loss.

Thank you! At least I was able to claim the items that weren't destroyed. The rest were more sentimental or convenient to have handy (old passports, birth certificates, marriage license, etc.).

Sentimental items are really hard to lose, convenient items might be a bit of a pain to replace (although old passports can’t be replaced either). It’s good to know that you were still able to claim some of your items.
