I just picked up a very special vintage bag. It's in pretty good condition, but it needs some new turnlocks, a hardware polish, and a little color touch up.

What do you ladies recommend for restoring the color on black leather that is worn in spots? (On the leather piping on the bag and on the strap edging).

The suede side is still really soft and plush. Part of me wants to give it a bath just to make the leather clean, but I do not want to loose the supple suede. Will the suede remain "fluffy" after a wash?

The suede on the old bags is wonderful, and handles a wash beautifully. But it does sometimes dry stiff at first, then softens with repeated conditioning and handling. Coach will send a new turnlock kit for free I believe if you call their customer service #. Have you had a chance to read through the "Rehab and Rescue" thread? It has all the information you'd ever want to know. In better detail, but to recap: many on here wash and condition their bags and if the scuffing and color loss isn't restored that way, using either an edge dye/ edge kote (Fiebings carries good stuff) or a color matched light touch up of acrylic paint which dries to a permanent nice match usually.
Here's that link: There's a lot to read but once you start fixing up old bags you'll find yourself pretty addicted to the process.

My friend just recently told me there's a savers near her neighborhood. Its kind of the "old, rich, cowboy/hippie area. Probably lots of old designer gear in the back of everyone's closets over there, I should check it out one of these days.

OMG !!! They're opening up one just a few minutes from me in LESS THAN 2 WEEKS !!!!!!!!!

HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY !!!!!!!!! :yahoo:

make sure whatever you buy there you get authenticated... There's a couple of really lovely gals who do that in a thread here... :roflmfao::roflmfao::roflmfao::roflmfao::roflmfao:

snort !!!!

maybe there's a list i can print out...? :d

just remember the number one rule: Everything with a ykk zipper is a-ok!

LOL!!! Something tells me all the fakes in the store near you, Hyacinth, are going to be removed from the floor! I know my thrift stores could care less, and I see some out on the floor that even I can spot as fake pretty quick.

Hee hee - the people at Clothes Mentor are already used to me checking everything for fakes, now it's going to be Savers' turn! :p

Ebay Deals count too!!! If it's second-hand/new to you and you are proud of the deal you got...let us know!!! I love those kind of reveals!! The reason I started this thread is because I usually only buy second hand stuff, and I feel like I really wanna do a "reveal" but most of the Coach buyers on here have already "been there, done that!" so my bags are YESTERDAYS NEWS lol.
I would love to see them!

That's great - but be careful what you wish for - my pile of vintage project bags has grown dramatically since they opened a Savers near me. I can't keep up with rehabbing them but I can't seem to stop buying them! :shrugs:

One really nice thing about Savers is that you can exchange items within a week of purchase (with the receipt and the tag attached) unlike Goodwill and Salvation Army and many other thrift shops.

The Goodwill in my area offers a 7 day full return policy w/ tags attached. So even if you can't find anything to exchange for it you can still get your full refund.

Thanks, I'm already starting a 2-week program of practicing self-restraint - and no new rehab projects until I finish the ones already in the queue. (I DID apply for my Savers Club card though, no sense in wasting any time once those doors swing open!)

Please, oh please, tell them we NEED ONE in Florida! One of our two Salvation Army stores is closing in December...due to difficult economic conditions...duuh! Isn't that why we need it?
